Functional Communication and Language Development
Graduate level course that examines theoretical and applied foundations of communication development and intervention for students with disabilities. Procedures for the infusion of augmentative and alternative communication systems into home, school, and community settings are highlighted.
Communication and Social Development and Intervention in Early Childhood
Graduate level course designed to provide an examination of (a) typical communication and social development in early childhood, and (b) a variety of validated intervention strategies that can be used to enhance the communicative and social competence of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who have developmental delays or disabilities. The course emphasizes teaming with other professionals, parents, and caregivers, integrating social interventions with goals from other curricular areas, and implementing effective interventions in a variety of natural environments.
Supporting Young Children with Developmental Delays in Natural Environments Graduate level course designed to examine a variety of strategies for organizing and managing various early childhood environments to maximize children’s well being and learning. Home, family day-care, and infant, toddler, and preschool group care and/or classroom programs will be analyzed as potential contexts for intervention.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication Instructional Strategies: Graduate level course focusing on assessment and intervention considerations in augmentative and alternative communication. Includes emphasis on aided, unaided, electronic, and gestural communication techniques.
Electronic Communication Aids: Graduate level course focusing on features
available in electronic communication aids as well as strategies for programming and troubleshooting communication aids.

Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Special Education classrooms. District-Agency Administration Doctoral level experience focusing on issue related to district-agency
administration.
Exemplary Programs Doctoral level experience focusing on recommended practices and
exemplary programs. Special Topics/Early Research I – II Doctoral level experience related to emphasis area. Independent Reading Doctoral level experience related to synthesis and application of literature
related to emphasis area. Intern II: Distance Education Doctoral level internship focusing on pedagogical issues related to
distance education.
Adaptive Technology in Special Education Undergraduate level course designed to assist students in identifying and implementing adaptive and assistive technology in the special education curriculum. The areas of interest include adapted microcomputers, voice output, switching devices, alternative input methods, and other adaptive and assistive devices.

Colloquium in Speech-Language Pathology Graduate level course that is the second of a two-course sequence examining current research dealing with theoretical and therapeutic implications in the various pathologies of speech and language. Opportunity of individual investigations and study provided.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication Graduate level course focusing on assessment and intervention
considerations in augmentative and alternative communication. Includes emphasis on aided, unaided, electronic, and gestural communication techniques.
Directed Observation Undergraduate level course focusing on the observation and evaluation of
the methods and materials used in treating speech and hearing disorders. Opportunity for supervised clinical practice.
Applied Phonetics Undergraduate level course introducing the physiological and acoustic
characteristics of speech. Classification and production of English speech sounds. Phonemic transcription, including some analysis of deviant speech. Lab experiences weekly.
Language Development in Special Populations Undergraduate course focusing on understanding the dynamics of
language development and usage from birth through the school years. Examination of assessment and intervention strategies for young children with language delays.
Experiments in Speech-Language Pathology
Graduate level course that is the first of a two-course sequence stressing clinical research in the area of human communication development and disorders. Course focuses on both single subject and group design. Course culminates in a formal proposal. The research is completed and the results formally presented in the second course in the sequence.
Consulting and Interviewing in Speech-Language Pathology Graduate level course providing instruction and experiences managing
interviewing, consulting, and educational activities for families of persons with speech and hearing disabilities and/or clients with disabilities.
Diagnostic Methods in Speech-Language Pathology Graduate level course providing instruction and experiences in the
diagnostic procedures and routines used in the evaluation of speech and language disorders. Emphasis on familiarization with available evaluative tools and practical experience in conducting actual diagnostic sessions;

client interview, interpretation of test results, relating information to parents, and report writing.
Seminar: Professional Issues in Speech-Language Pathology Graduate level course emphasizing current issues, professional ethics,
organization, and administration of speech-language pathology programs in all settings. Includes state and national laws governing professional practices in speech-language pathology, professional growth and development, employment practices and procedures.
Stuttering Undergraduate level course focusing on the causation, symptoms, and
remediation procedures of stuttering; specific therapy procedures in the clinic, the school, and the home.
Language Development and Intervention: Early Stages Co-instructor of a graduate level course focusing on the development of
language from birth through the school years. Assessment and Intervention Strategies for individuals with language delays or disorders.
Proactive Approaches to Managing Challenging Behaviors in Young Children Graduate level course focusing on positive treatment alternatives for
individuals who engage in challenging behavior. Addresses (a) identifying the function of the behavior, (b) functional assessment of challenging behavior, and (c) proactive intervention strategies.
