Our goals for your child this year

It is important to us to prepare all students for middle school. This means it will be a challenging year for some students -- academically and/or socially.

We realize that every student is in the process of growing and developing and will reach milestones at different points in the year.

First and foremost, we will focus on:

Students will take a pre-assessment to determine prior knowledge and a post- assessment to determine proficiency.

Lessons will be taught with mentor texts. Students will apply the lessons with “good fit” books.

Reading - Differentiation

INTERVENTIONS and ENRICHMENT

Students will apply lessons using informational and literary texts at their reading level to address the standards.

Daily, students will work in small groups on strategies and skills to develop their reading habits.

Targeted instruction during Guided Reading time Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 9:30-10:00.

Groups will change regularly throughout the year. Each group with meet with teachers 1-4 times per week.

Homework Policy

● Check your student’s planner and make sure they complete assignments. ● Homework assignments are posted on the Holmes Fifth Grade Google Site at

the beginning of each week. ● Reading logs need to be filled out nightly so that students are prepared for

in-class conferring. ● Late assignments, including projects, impact your child’s learning and may

result in loss of ClassDojo points. ● For a planned extended absence, please notify your student’s teacher at least

one week in advance.
