DIPLOMA OF EXCELLENCE (30 credits) In addition to all standard credit requirements; of the 30 credits, two must be in a foreign language and seven of the credits must be taken from the Advanced Class List. DIPLOMA OF DISTINCTION (28 credits) In addition to all the standard credit requirements; of the 28 credits, two must be in the foreign language and three of the credits must be taken from the Advanced Class list.

This class focuses on an introduction to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher. Students will also learn
the use of computers in a network setting along with basic Internet research skills, and will use EPC (Ellsworth
Publishing Company’s) keyboarding techniques and learn the composing and typing personal and business letters.

Grade Level 10-12
This course is designed as a study of basic business terminology and operations. Students will learn about day to day
decisions, ethics, and business activities. Students will be challenged to create a budget, and manage their

This course is designed as a study of processes of business, non-profit public and private institutions and agencies,

The composition course guides students through each step of the writing process with an emphasis on revision.
Practice in grammar, usage and mechanics will be included along with research, academic and workplace skills. This

ENGLISH I 1 CREDI T
Grade level 9
English I is a required course for freshmen. In this class, students will study basic grammar and composition skills and
will be introduced to a variety of literary forms (short stories, poetry, drama, novels and epic works). This course
adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky Department of Education.
ENGLISH II 1 CREDI T
Grade level 10
English II is a required course for sophomore students. It reinforces information from the previous year and there is
a greater variety of work studied (short stories, poetry, drama, fairytales, autobiographies and essays.) Students also
continue to study language mechanics and composition. This course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for
the Kentucky Department of Education.
ENGLISH III 1 CREDI T
Grade level 11
English III focuses on American Literature, from early Native American works through works of the mid-1900s.
Lessons include reviews of events of the time periods and how such events affected the writing of any particular era.
Students continue to create written documents and to improve writing skills. This course adheres to Program of
Studies requirements for the Kentucky Department of Education.

This course is designed to give students basic principles of nutrition, time management, cooking, baking, kitchen
operation, manners and fundamental sewing skills.
CULIN ARY I .5 CREDI T
Grade Level 11-12
This advanced course allows students to increase competencies in a variety of food preparation and technique.
Emphasis will be placed on food preparation, major nutrient classes and their relationship to food, garnishing, and
menu planning. This course includes construction and design of apparel and accessories using a pattern, principles
clothing, selection and care.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
SPANISH I 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 9, 10
This course is a requirement for students who want to fulfill the minimum requirement for admission to a Kentucky
public college or university. It introduces the student to the Spanish language and the customs of countries where it
is spoken. The four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish are presented. All
students must expect to invest a minimum amount of time outside of class to be successful in any foreign language.
Prerequisite: minimum grades of “C” in English with a solid understanding of grammar, freshmen must also have the
signature of their 8th grade teacher. Note: Students must pass the first semester of the course in order to continue
the second semester.
SPANISH II 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 9-12
Based on the Spanish I class, this is a continuation of the development of the Spanish language skills and the study of
life in Spanish countries. Intermediate vocabulary, grammar and their use in speaking and writing is a focus. As with
the Spanish I course, students must expect to invest a minimum amount of time outside of class to be successful.
Successful completion of the course satisfies the foreign language requirement for earning a college preparatory high
school diploma and for acceptance into a Kentucky public college or university. Prerequisite: recommendation of the
Spanish I teacher and a final grade of “C” in Spanish I, having passed both semesters of the course.

This course assists students who lack a sufficient background to be successful in a high school graduation credit
Algebra I course to develop the skills and concepts necessary to be successful for high school credit Algebra I. This
course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky Department of Education of mathematical
concepts.
ALGE BRA I 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 9
This course is designed for the student with average mathematical ability. Topics include solving inequalities, systems
of linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, quadratic and exponential functions, rational and radical
expressions, statistics and probability. This course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky
Department of Education of mathematical concepts. Prerequisite: successful completion of Algebra 1-A.
ALGE BRA II 1 CREDI T
Grade Level: 10-12
This course is designed mainly for the college bound student. The use of abstract thinking skills and the algebraic
solution of problems in various content areas will be stressed. All topics will stress critical thinking and real-life
application. This course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky Department of Education of
mathematical concepts. Prerequisite: Algebra I-A and I-B.

This course is designed to help students think mathematically. Students will be introduced to geometric terms,
concepts, proofs, and problem solving. Students make connections to real life through integration and application of
true problems. This class allows students self actualization through diversified learning styles such as individual and
group work, projects and reports. This course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky

This course includes the study of Trigonometry and Analytical geometry and integers as well as additional work with

Students learn basic trigonometry concepts. Students are prepared for what they will receive in a college course of
algebra and trigonometry. They will make real world applications of trigonometry and investigate the importance of

Grade Level 9 This freshman course covers physical fitness, nutrition, self-esteem, stress, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, reproduction,

Grade Level 9
Students are taught to enrich their physical and mental skills through various types of exercises and games. This
course is required for graduation. This course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky

RELIGION
Religion I 1 Credit
Grade level 9
Faith and Revelation: the purpose of this course is to give students a general knowledge of Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and how we can come to know God through natural revelation. Through their study of the Bible they will come to encounter the living Word of God, Jesus Christ. In the course they will learn about the Bible, authored by God through Inspiration, and its value to people throughout the world. If they have not been taught this earlier, they will learn how to read the Bible and will become familiar with the major sections of the Bible and the books included in each section. The students will pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to know and love Jesus Christ more personally. Who is Jesus Christ? Students will be introduced to the mystery of Jesus Christ, the living Word of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Jesus Christ is the ultimate Revelation to us from God. In learning about who He is, the students will also learn who He calls them to be. This course adheres to the Program of Studies requirements for the Diocese of Owensboro.

Morality / Theology of the Body: The purpose of this course is for students to grow in their understanding of the Christian moral life. Living a moral life in today's world is difficult, and even counter cultural at times. Through their studies, students will be given the tools to see that a moral life is a full, happy life, and not just a set of rules that will restrict their freedom. Students will spend a large portion of the class studying Blessed John Paul II's Theology of the Body, which focuses on the great dignity of each human person, created by God as male and female. Through this lens, students will be given the chance to see the joy that comes from living a moral life in Christ. This course adheres to the Program of Studies requirements for the Diocese of Owensboro.
Religion III/World Civilization 1 Credit
Grade level 11
Church History: This course presents a catechesis of the Church and the Body of Christ in history: its nature and meaning, images, marks, life and ministry, guide to moral life, and the role of prayer. The purpose of this course is to supply the students with a general knowledge of the Church’s history from apostolic times to the present. They will be introduced to the fact that the Church was founded by Christ through the Apostles and is sustained by him throughout history through the Holy Spirit. The students will come to know that the Church is the living Body of Christ today and, as such, has both divine and human elements. In this course, students will learn about the Church’s 2,000 years of history and about how the Church is led and governed by the successors of the Apostles. This course adheres to the Program of Studies requirements for the Diocese of Owensboro
Religion IV 1 Credit
Grade 12
Scripture: The purpose of this course is to give an overview of Sacred Scripture, both Old and New Testament, with an introduction to the basic principles for understanding and interpreting the Bible. Given the time limits, it will not be possible to introduce all the books of the Bible here. But every effort is made to project a sense of the unity of the narrative for the divine plan of salvation, the presence of God’s action in this record of his Revelation, and his desire to share his merciful love with us. This course adheres to the Program of Studies requirements for the Diocese of Owensboro.

AN ATOMY EXTRA QUALI TY POI N T 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 11, 12
This course studies the human body, both structure and functions in a very technical and advanced fashion and is
designed for students with a good foundation in science and advanced scholastic ability. It is intended and
recommended for the student who is planning to enter into any of the health allied fields of study. Area of study
include advanced review of cell functions, details study of all cellular materials and tissues, intense explanations of all
organs and systems, and interrelations of anatomical structures and physiological aspects of the human body.
BIOLO GY 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 10-12
This course is designed to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills
necessary to deal critically with the rapid changing science of biology. The three major topics are cell anatomy and
physiology, genetics and evolution, and intense study of organisms of the five kingdoms. This course adheres to
Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky Department of Education of mathematical concepts.
BIO TE CHN OLOG Y .5 CREDI T
Grade Level 10-12
Chemistry Extra Quality Point 1 Credit
Grade Level 11, 12 This course studies the nature of matter and its reaction. It is laboratory-oriented and designed for the college
bound student who is thinking about a major in science, math or an analytical field. There is an emphasis on
mathematical relationships in chemical compositions and chemical reactions because math is the language of this
science. Prerequisites: Biology with at least as “C” Average and Algebra II unless it is taken concurrently.
Earth and Space Science 1 Credit
Grade Level 11, 12 This course is designed for the student who is interested in learning more about the formation of the planet Earth
and how the planet is a part of our solar system. Earth Science is broken into three sections. Space science entails
study of the birth, life and death of a star and the formation and composition of all the planets in our solar system.
Geological science details the formation of Earth, its land masses, and geological effects of natural disasters and plate
tectonics. Meteorological science explains the conditions that contribute to and result from weather patterns on the
planet and how the weather is affected within the solar system through cloud formation, ocean currents and wind
systems. This course adheres to Program of Studies requirements for the Kentucky Department of Education of
mathematical concepts.
Forensics .5 Credit
Grade Level 11, 12 This course is a problem-based inquiry course dealing with Forensic sciences.

Grade Level 9
This course is designed to give the student a basic but intensive understanding of science concepts in chemistry and
includes areas of study in mathematical relationships in chemical composition and reactions, structure and function

Physics Extra Quality Point 1 Credit
Grade Level 11, 12 A course designed for the college bound student, it focuses on the study of the laws of nature. Major topics covered
are motion, energy, momentum, Newtonian dynamics, statistics, work and fluids pressure. Students develop a
conceptual understanding of physics content through the use of scientific inquiry. They experience concepts such as
motions and forces, conservation of energy and the increase in disorder, interactions of energy and matter. A
scientific inquiry approach uses concrete hands-on experiences that require students to apply critical thinking skills.
Zoology Extra Quality Point 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 11, 12
This course studies the origin, organization, and diversity of the animal kingdom. Zoology is designed for students
with a good foundation in science and advanced scholastic ability. This is an intense study into the anatomy and
physiology of all invertebrate and vertebrate animals. Topics are centered on the related and evolutionary
development of one species and their representatives as body systems and adaptations continue to advance.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Criminal Law .5 Credit
Grade Level 10-12 This course attempts to present the student with a wide range of crime in our society, the causes and the effects of
crime and those professionals who are responsible for managing crime in the United States. The course will rely on
discussion, guest speakers and hands on experience. Study will be made of national, state, and local rehabilitation
programs, crime prevention, probation and parole, criminal justice programs, the Kentucky court system and area
law enforcement agencies.

Grade Level 10-12 This course uses newspapers, weekly magazines, news television, and the internet to look at events that share our
world locally and nationally. The students will work independently, as well as in small groups to delve into the
backgrounds of breaking and ongoing news stories. The students will also be required to provide news topics of
interest to share with the class on occasion.
ECON OMI CS .5 CREDI T
Grade Level 10-12
Economics is the study of how we produce, distribute, and consume goods and services. Traditional and market-economic systems are compared in order to study how we satisfy our unlimited wants with the limited resources available. The course will include a brief history of the American Economic System, as well as, a discussion of current American economic policy. The concept of global economic interdependence will be integrated as part of the course.

The study of persistent issues related to social, political, and economic facets of human behavior. Grade Level 12 This course is designed for the student to gain an understanding of the workings of the government of the United
States. The growth of the democratic form of government will be studied from its early concepts through the
modern era. The students will be involved with the study of the Constitution of the United States and its
amendments, civil rights, the political process, the branches of government, local and state governments and
comparisons to other systems. Students will become familiar with skills involving note taking from lectures, the use
of outlines, and vocabulary.

Grade Level 10-12 This course is designed to study man’s behavior in the areas which are considered key problems for adolescents
today. Included in this is a study of the effects of drugs in our society. Its primary focus is in the area of human
growth and development from birth through the eight stages of life. It also deals with such issues as teenage suicide,
mental breakdowns, family adjustments, and learning and cognitive processes.
SO CIOLO GY 1 CREDI T
Grade Level 11, 12 This course deals with the social problems that threaten the quality of our lives. The contents of the course are
physical health, mental illness, war and terrorism, prejudice and discrimination, sex roles and inequality, ageism,
alcohol and drugs, crime, violence, poverty, the changing family, education, immigration, technology and
environment. The areas will be studied and researched with debates, group activities, assignments, projects,
presentations and tests. We will use newspapers extensively to keep students current on social problems that exist
today.
United States History 1 Credit
Grade Level 10 This course is a study of American history beginning with a review from the Discovery Age to Reconstruction,
followed by an in-depth focus on the post Civil-War period to the present. Besides stressing various interpretive
themes, emphasis is also placed on political history and economic development of the United States. This course
includes the study of United States climate, natural resources and other geography knowledge. Focus will be placed
on acquiring such skills as understanding vocabulary, map reading and acquiring knowledge of important events.

This course focuses on the elements of art. Students will learn and apply the elements of art in a variety of two-
dimensional artworks including still life, landscape, portrait, and non-objective art. Students will work with various
media which may include pencil, charcoal, marker, and pastel. Students will learn to reflect upon and assess the
characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others. Students are required to enter a personal work of art
in the Student Art Exhibit.

Students will participate in daily improvisational games and exercises, learn theatre terminology, develop characters
using body, voice, and imagination; develop skills in pantomime and work with partners or groups. The final
culmination of the class is a play in which all class members have a part.
Humanities 1 Credit

This course introduces students to the visual and performing arts throughout history. Students will gain a basic
understanding of two-dimensional art, sculpture, architecture, music, theatre, and dance. Students will create
artworks related to each time period of study through a variety of processes using a variety of media. By the end of
this course students will gain an understanding of the arts in relation to history and cultures and make
interdisciplinary connections. Students are required to enter a personal work of art in the Student Art Exhibit.

This course covers beginning piano and guitar. Students should learn basic chords in both, as well as, how to read
music. Tempo and mood skills are developed. The equivalent of two books in standard piano or guitar will be
covered in this course.

Grade Level 11-12
In this course students will use the elements of art to create a variety of three-dimensional artworks. Students will
learn to apply the principles of design to produce successful compositions. Students will work with a variety of
media. Students will study individual artists and their styles and create artworks inspired by these artists. Although
the focus of this course is on production, students will be able to analyze and interpret three-dimensional artworks
with appropriate terminology. Students are required to enter a personal work of art in the Student Art Exhibit.

In this course students will apply the elements of art and principles of design to create successful compositions. This
course will focus on developing painting techniques. Students will work regularly with watercolor and acrylic, but
other painting media may be explored. Students will study individual artists' styles and create paintings inspired by
them. Students will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.

Photography courses introduce students to the materials, processes, and artistic techniques of creating photographs
for a variety of purposes. Students learn about the operation of cameras, composition, lighting techniques, depth of
field, filters, and camera angles. Film and print development may be included. The course may cover black and white
or color photography or both. Students may also be exposed to digital photography and methods to process them.
As students advance they are encouraged to develop their own artistic styles. Major photographers, movements, and
styles may also be studied.

The course is designed to give college bound students a background in mathematics and science preparing them for
college courses in these areas and to help them master the mathematics and science areas often found on the ACT
test. Students will review algebra, geometry, and science concepts as they apply in different problem solving
situations, and to cover other areas of mathematics and science not previously covered in classroom instruction.
Students also learn time management testing situations, and problem solving strategies often used in college classes.
Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry.

This course is designed to provide students with experiences designed to prepare them for college and careers,
learning basic life skills. College and scholarship applications will be covered during the first semester of this course.
Representatives from many colleges will attend, educating students on specific college requirements and the pre-
college process. Three college visits will take place off campus during this course. Students will be working on
different projects at different times with the expectation to be self-motivated and mature. Students will grow and

This course is designed to assist students with developing skills needed to be successful leaders and responsible
members of society. Students will develop personal attributes and social skills. Emphasis will be placed on
interpersonal skills, team building, communication, personal development and leadership. This course will include
opportunities for students to apply their knowledge. Students must apply for and be accepted into the Leadership
Dynamics course during the semester prior to scheduling the course. The course includes travel to a foreign country
and the full schedule incorporates a twelve-month cycle. Students will spend approximately 200 hours on the
course. This course is an elective course in social studies, but can be adjusted, accordingly, for a religion, art, history
or foreign language credit.

TECHNICAL SCHOOL
Technical school courses are available at OCTC for junior/senior students that have completed all of their core
requirements for graduation, up until the end of the sophomore year and meet the minimum entry course
requirements as set forth by KCTC. Students apply to take these courses in March for the following school year.
