5. AGENDA 1 A. Athletic Conditioning and Foundations in Academic Literacy Learning Community

This learning community between the football program and English departments seeks to help student-athletes with the transition from high school academics and athletics to college academics and athletics. In the English 85 course, students will read and write about transitioning to college life (academics and athletics) using a series of high interest reading and writing assignments, in the Athletic 03 course, Athletic Conditioning, students will prepare themselves for college-level athletic competition. (1) ATHL-03 (Athletic Conditioning) (2) ENGL-85 (Foundations in Academic Literacy)

B. Automotive Technology Learning Community The Automotive Technology Learning Community provides program majors with a fast track completion model of two semesters with an effective cohort enrollment scheme. It is comprised of courses that focus on skillsets needed for entry level employment as an Automotive Technician. Additionally, the cohort enrollment structure provides opportunity of infusing employability soft-skills across the cohort which can substantially boost one’s chances of success within an internship and/or job upon completion of the program. (1) AUTO-04 (Automotive Mechanics) (2) AUTO-32 (Wheel Alignment and Suspension) (3) AUTO-33 (Automotive Brake Systems) (4) AUTO-42 (Automotive Electrical Systems) (5) AUTO-63 (Basic Automotive Electronics for Technicians)

C. Interpersonal Communications and College Composition and Reading Learning Community Learning Communities are pairs or cluster of courses that resolve around a theme or major. If you are interested in one of these classes you must enroll in all of the classes in that group. (1) COMM-05 (Interpersonal Communication) (2) ENGL-01A (College Composition and Reading)

Item 5C was pulled by Dee Near. Dee inquired on if the description in the Schedule

of Classes will resemble the other Learning Communities. Julie Clark stated that currently there is no description for Learning Communities in the Schedule of Classes. Vince Piro stated that only the Puente Learning Project does have a description and that he contacted faculty for COMM-05 and ENGL-01A and they would write a different description if asked.

Item 5A was pulled by Luis Flores. Luis stated that it was discussed and a solution was made about how students who do not assess into ENGL-85 will still be allowed to enroll in football.

6. BUSINESS A. Action: 2015-2016 2+2 Articulation Course Agreement List

Julie Clark stated that this is just an update to the 2+2 Articulation Course Agreement List to change AGBS-30 to AGBS-30A, and to add BIOL-32 and BIOL-32L.

Dee Near inquired on how the prerequisite of ENGL-85 is validated for students receiving CLDV-01. Julie Clark stated this is a Jim Andersen question. Dee stated then how are we supposed to vote on this. Julie stated we are only voting on the change AGBS-30 to ABGS-30A and the addition of BIOL-32 and BIOL-32L.

B. Information: 2016-2017 Distance Education Course List

Julie Clark stated that this is information and this reflects all the courses that have been approved for Distance Education as of the December 3rd meeting. Julie also stated the courses with asterisk after them are still awaiting approval from the Chancellor’s Office.

Dee Near stated that she sent Julie Clark and Jodie Steeley the date of when NUTR-10 was approved. Julie stated she will go back through her records to add that to the list.

C. First Reading for Discussion: New Prefix ENGX (English Accelerated) – Denise

Rempel Tabled to the February 4th meeting.

D. Discussion: Associate Degree Breadth Requirements and Title 5 Julie Clark stated that the Social and Behavioral Sciences areas of CSU-GE and IGETC

Breadth eliminated the 10 subcategories. It was once recommended that we look at of Associate Degree Breadth and consider matching it to CSU-GE Breadth.

Julie Clark went on to explain that under Title 5 students are only required to complete 3 units of Social and Behavioral Sciences, currently we have students completing 6 units. Julie also explained that under Title 5 our Associate Degree Breadth pattern only has to be 18 units, currently ours require 23 units.

Dee Near gave a brief history of the Associate Degree Breadth and stated it was last reviewed around 2008. Dee also stated that the History and Political Science requirement was added to insure students meet the CSU-GE US History requirement. Dee also went onto explain that with the ADT degrees students do not have to fulfill the US History requirement prior to transferring.

Dee Near also suggested that we look at eliminating courses from our Associate Degree Breadth that were denied CSU-GE/IGETC Breadth.

Good lengthy dialog took place regarding the Associate Degree Breadth requirement. Items discussed included: Creating a Task Force Making Social and Behavioral Sciences one requirement for 3 units. How these changes will impact enrollment in various courses. Students are not required to take Physical Activity courses for CSU-GE and IGETC Breadth.

Brian Ellison stated this was a topic of conversation at San Diego Community College District and across the state. Brian suggested we get ahead of the game and be a leader instead of waiting to see what others do.

Julie Clark stated she will send out an invite to form a Task Force to look into changing the Associate Degree Breadth requirement and include faculty members of various disciplines and from student services.

E. Reporting Minimum Qualifications Listed on CurricUNET to Human Resources and

Administration Julie Clark stated that the Minimum Qualifications listed in CurricUNET never get

reported to Human Resources nor Administration. Dee Near stated that a course can be open to more than one discipline to teach it.

Dee gave an example of Human Anatomy could allow faculty that meet minimum qualifications for Kinesiology or Registered Nursing to teach it in addition to Biology.

Good lengthy dialog took place regarding the Minimum Qualifications. Items discussed included: How minimum qualifications for a discipline are set at the Chancellor’s Office with input from the State Academic Senate. How this is different than a faculty member meeting equivalency.

Julie Clark stated that she will discuss this with Human Resources and Administration to try to come up with a suitable solution. Julie also stated she will bring this back for further dialog.

A. Articulation Officer – Lou Ferguson Lou Ferguson reported that ASSIST is open for Summer 2016 changes. Julie Clark

stated she will send Lou a list of curriculum changes that will go into effect Summer 2016.

B. IPRSLOAC – Julie Kehoe

Julie Kehoe reported that the Program Review form is close to being done and the deadline to submit completed program reviews has been changed to September 2nd, but they are asking everyone to initiate the review by the end of February. Julie also stated that the next IPRSLOAC meeting is Friday January 29th at 2:00pm in the Administrative Conference Room.

C. Distance Education – Jodie Steeley

Julie Clark reported the next Distance Education Committee meeting is Wednesday February 3rd at 8:00am in the Board Room.

Biology

A.S. – Biological Science (04100.AS) A.S.-T. – Biology

Current Proposed The student majoring in biological science is generally preparing for transfer to a four-year institution and a career in research, teaching, lab technology, one of the health care professions, or related fields. Math requirements for biology majors vary widely. Investigate the math requirements of the four-year schools to which the student intends to apply and design an educational plan accordingly. For an Associate in Science Degree in Biological Science, a student must meet the basic graduation requirements (CHEM-04A and BIOL-04A should be taken for science breadth), and complete the courses listed below. Program Student Learning Outcomes A. Organize, analyze and interpret observations and predictions

about the natural world using the scientific method. B. Identify and describe cellular and multicellular processes and

structures and relate them to their functions. C. Analyze patterns and mechanisms of genetics from the

molecular to the population level. D. Recognize the ecological relationships between organisms and

their environment and the environmental impact of population growth.

E. Explain principles and mechanisms of evolution and recognize the resulting major groups of organisms as they are arranged in currently recognized taxa.

The Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer degree is designed for students preparing for transfer to a four-year institution and a career in research, teaching, lab technology, one of the health care professions, or related fields. Upon completion, students with an AS-T in Biology will be eligible to transfer with junior standing into an equivalent major within the CA State University (CSU) system. Students will be given priority consideration when applying to a particular program that is similar to the student's community college area of emphasis. For an Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer (AS-T), students must complete the following: (1) 60 semester CSU-transferable units. (2) the California State University-General Education-Breadth (CSU

GE-Breadth) for STEM pattern; Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) for STEM pattern.

(3) a minimum of 18 semester units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district.
