Statistical Information on Questions 2142 & 2176

Survey Overall

Number of survey respondents 891

Number of respondents who entered comments 147

Percentage of respondents who entered comments 16.5%

Number of overall comments made (on all eight themes) by respondents 204

Number of respondents who entered additional comments: 144

Percentage of respondents who entered additional comments: 16.2%

Number of overall additional comments made (on all eight themes) by respondents: 186

TOTAL of comments and additional comments 390

GRAND TOTAL of comments and additional comments 392

891 students took part in the survey; however, not all students chose to answer every single question.

Survey items requiring short answers usually produce lower response rates. It is precisely the case of questions 2142 and 2176.

Question 2142 had a response rate of 16.5%

Question 2176 had a slightly lower response rate of 16.2%

The higher number of comments compared to the number of respondents is explained by the fact that when each comment was analysed and was found to comprise more than

one component, each component was then compiled separately in the appropriate table. In a few isolated instances, there was further subdivision. Overall, this resulted in

seven supplementary comments. This happened when a student mentioned both a positive and a negative comment about the same theme. For example, one student praised

janitorial services for college cleanliness (physical environment) but found that desks and chairs to be old and uncomfortable (equipment-physical environment).

Examination of comments revealed the following seven themes:

Physical Environment (Library, cafeteria, labs, equipment)

Academics and Schedules

Personnel

Services, Centers and Library

Technology

Vanier Experience

Cafeteria Services

These themes, as well as an additional theme called "other" that groups all comments that did not fit in any of the themes, are analysed in the following pages.

Since "comments" and "additional comments" focus on the same concerns, they were treated as one set of data and analysed conjointly.

1. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT (library, cafeteria, labs, equipment) SATISFACTION CONCERN OTHER Janitorial staff are doing a good job at keeping the college clean :) Need more outlets in the library for laptops on the 4th floor, with cubicles. Need more outlets in library in general

The gym facilities, computer facilities, and student services offered are generally excellent and uncomplicated to access. The campus is very nice.

A quiet cafeteria should also be implemented in the main building, so students don't have to walk to the N building all the time.

The janitors are doing a good job. It is all the time clean. A lot of the student spaces are really lacking and seem to be an after thought of the college.

Not enough desks in the library for 6700 students…

There should be more spaces where people can study and allowed to bring their snacks.

The art department also absolutely requires more space and resources, and more industrial sinks.

The segregated cafeterias should be changed where everyone can go and feel comfortable and not have the feeling they do not belong to that specific clique of people.

In my opinion the nursing labs are underdeveloped, we find ourselves having to do the "pretend game" most of the time there is not enough equipment for all of us to get a chance to practice our skills. Lastly i think the school cafeteria lacks big time...

There is not a lot of space in our library, yes there are 3 floors, though mostly all tables are taken.

The library needs more power outlets.

There should be an eating area in the Math & Science center, or at least somewhere in the library. It's a shame that the library is three floors and we have to go down 5 floors (from the MSC) to eat at Jakes or anywhere else. Also, because the MSC is like my home and I hate leaving it!

The quality of subject/course related study area may need more improvement. Make it more easy to maneuver around since the desks and chairs are sometimes too close in the Chemistry. More desks needed in the Physics center. The ideal, so far, in the MSC (Math and Science Center) on the 5th floor.

The desks and chairs are old, and not comfortable, and are not on level.

The lack of computers and overall limited space in the Nursing Resource lounge is very disappointing Computers do not work at all, and space is very small and uncomfortable for such a large group of students. (1st-3rd years)

They should offer more seating equipment on the 4th and the 5th floor of the library. During the period of the exams, no seats are to be found.

There should be a silent study area in the main building, in which students would be permitted to eat while studying. Some lab equipment from the physics labs, is very old and needs to be replaced.

The labs are more accessible and available in the main building.

I realized that there are a lot of broken chairs in the classrooms and also the classrooms in the E-400 are not really suitable because they are long and it is hard for students in the back to see what the teacher is writing on the board. Also in the same classes, even if we open the windows, it gets always hot. And finally, I think that the carpets should be removed.

I think all of these things are important, however I am not rly satisfied. The library seems really big but in reality when midterms start coming up and during the afternoon, it is sooo hard to find space.

There is not nearly enough space in the library to work. There are too many students that need study space compared to the space available.

More places where students can eat and quietly study, such as the quiet cafeteria except the rules of quietness should be enforced.

There could be more areas to study and learn by yourself, they have transformed into social rooms for friends to go and communicate while others attempt to find space and work quietly,

the library should have more space, more plugs

The library should have more space especially during busy hours.

Incredibly dissatisfied with the absence of quiet areas for studying and the fact that designated quiet areas are not followed through with "quiet study zone" signs posted. It is ridiculous that to find a quiet space, one would have to visit a university library rather than their own educational institution that they pay fees to attend.

There is not enough room in the library. There is also not enough room in the cafeterias. There is no quiet place to sit, eat and study, since we are not allowed to eat in the library. And in rush hour, there are no places to sit!

During examination period there not a lot of place in the library and sometimes the spaces is occupied by people who aren't even studying, just hanging out and making noise.

There is really no space for all students in all the cafs at Vanier especially since there is a break like Universal Break.

I find that there are not enough quiet places to eat and study, and the library tends to be crowded in certain moments (towards the middle of the day, ie. 11:00am to 1:30pm).

More library space would be nice.

Very often at times, the libraries are overcrowded, with people that are not necessarily doing any work at all. Those who are there primarily to socialize.

The space provided is fine, but there is never enough room for everyone and I find myself actually waiting around school on my break because I do not have a spot to sit down, when I could be doing homework.

Almost, no places to plug in laptops!!

Music in Jake's mall: I understand that it is people practising dj-ing but the music is way too loud sometimes, I have to practically scream to talk to my friends.

I find that there are not enough areas to lounge that resemble the quiet cafeteria, or N-5… Jake's is too distracting, noisy, and there is always something going on in there…the only comfortable place I've found in the past year and a half is the N-5 lounge... and only because of its access to power outlets and good WiFi; while still being able to socialize and work simultaneously in between classes. Everywhere is too full!!

Not enough place in library... silent study. Not enough practice rooms in the music dept. Can't practice when I need to because all the rooms are used, sometimes by people who don't even practice.

Vanier College really needs to improve on the building, provide newer equipment (especially the desks which are so uncomfortable) and most of all build a bridge which can connect the N building to the old building.

more space for studying, the fourth floor of the library is always full

There should be more available resources in the nursing resource room. As well as having more desks inside the nursing labs, too many students not enough desks! There should be also a quiet room where it is quiet and students are allowed to eat.

Cleaner areas and more designated quiet spaces required.

The school can be better and students should not have a problem to find space at their own college to study or to just socialize. DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE LIBRARY, thanks so much. It's mockery I believe.

I'm very dissatisfied with the library. It's very difficult to find a comfortable and quiet space to study.

I am displeased with the equipment available to our program especially when compared to equipment given to other programs. Also, our "program space" for students in our program who want to study and / or get together for projects that we have in groups is limited to four computers in a small space between two classrooms and two offices. There is not possibility for us to work in such a space and I feel that we should have an organised space reserved strictly for students from our program much like animal health, environment wildlife management and other such programs.

Never any room at the library.

I think Vanier needs café sort-of-places to study (second cup and Starbucks style-comfy, a little quiet, friendly) inside or beside the school. It would be great. Have better staffs in the cafeteria, and offer better food. Small recycle bins in each classes. :)

There should be more places to sit in the library and do work in silence.

The bathrooms at Vanier should be cleaned more often.

Allow food in library.

I feel like we need more places for students to just hang around, like more couches and little areas where we can all just comfortably sit and hang. I think it would be really better if we could take the laptops out of the library but not out of the school. like instead of beeping by the library doors, it beeps when we take it outside the school building.

The school is crowded and I see many students wasting the opportunity.

cafeteria and library are both terrible.

Also we need more places for students to be able to work other than the library because we are not allowed to eat in the library and Jake's mall or the Asian are too noisy. We need more study spaces with WiFi.

Please, please, please!! Add some space where students can sit down and study WHILE HAVING SOMETHING TO EAT. The quiet café in the N-building is great but there is rarely any place to sit down. We shouldn't have to go from one resource room to study, then to another room to eat. A second quiet cafe would be incredible.

Turn off the annoying music near Jake's Mall, it makes me want to leave with that genre of music.

Library and school WiFi need the most attention and effect a large number of students. Library needs more chairs and more quite study area. There's probably only a couple hundred chairs there to serve 6.5 k students.

not enough room at the N building so we can sit somewhere and eat and take our break. It is all the time full so we sit on the floor…

I'd love to see the Social Science room be expanded since there are many students in this program and there isn't enough space…It would also be beneficial in the future to change the desks that are broken in the rooms as more and more seem to be broken.

Some of the equipment seems outdated.

...although I am not that fond of the cafeterias, which are noisy.

Statistical Information Comments relating to the theme: Physical Environment

Number of comments on this theme 62

Percentage of overall comments corresponding to this theme 15.8%

Percentage of "satisfaction" comments 4.8%

Percentage of "concerns" comments 95.2%

Percentage of other comments corresponding to this theme 0%

Interpretation and Analysis Student comments are overwhelmingly negative as far as Vanier College's physical environment is concerned. The 4.8% of comments that reflect satisfaction are actually three comments, two of which praise janitors for keeping the school clean, while the other is a very general comment on the easy accessibility of the College's different facilities. As regards the comments that state dissatisfaction, they deplore the following:

Significant overcrowding and ensuing lack of space for students to do their work (quiet spaces such as the library, the cafeteria, or other areas in the school)

Old and often defective equipment around the school particularly in labs, and broken classroom furniture

Rule prohibiting eating in areas such as the library or certain centers And of the three, it is the first that groups the vast majority of the comments. Students seem to feel that not only is there insufficient study space but that even conventionally quiet areas such as the library have been invaded by students who are there only to socialize and pass time between classes. At high-traffic times in particular, chairs to sit on seem to be a hard-to-find commodity, as are power outlets to plug laptops. Standard deviation values for student responses about the importance and satisfaction of the common areas and the library paint a very eloquent portrait of the situation. The library is said to be very important (8.49) with good consensus (1.71). However, values on satisfaction drop (7.08) while opinions differ highly (2.31). A similar trend but more acute is seen where common spaces are concerned. These seem to be less important (7.38) yet there is no consensus (2.22). Furthermore, satisfaction dips dramatically (6.55) and opinions differ even more (2.30). The above values seem to indicate need for immediate intervention. It is evident that for a certain number of students (although data is insufficient to know exactly how many) this is a difficult, if not unbearable situation that could possibly have devastating consequences on their academic performance and grades. One of the respondents alluded to what seemed to be a fairly recent event, which saw students being granted more leisure space in the College at the detriment of quiet study areas. If this is indeed correct, this may be something the College may want to re-evaluate and effect needed changes.

2. ACADEMICS & SCHEDULES

SATISFACTION CONCERN OTHER The College offers great classes and preparation for university as well as becoming part of the work force.

…For cont-ed I wish there were less assignments only because most of the students at night work full time and have family to take care of (cook, clean etc.) Maybe more exams & tests = less assignments.

If Omnivox had the ability to live stream courses, that would be very convenient.

the nursing program is an amazing program .

The only problem that I could think of was the physics Webwork given. The step-by-step answers were extremely hard to solve because there were usually small numerical errors that occurred in the beginning of the problem that got carried until the end of the problem. Many steps meant that there were greater chances for errors. Numerical answers to problems were given at the end of the due date of a physics Webwork. However, the step-by-step solutions to these problems were never given so it was hard to study for a test if some questions were not completed. It was a horrible experience to waste so much time re-trying a physics problem that required several steps to solve. In my experience, physics Webworks required lots of re-tries and seeing the teacher to find out there was a small problem in one of the steps. Sometimes, simply figuring out how to do a problem not presented in class took hours of time and did set back other homework.

Everything we were told in high school about CEGEP wasn't true. It feels almost exactly the same as high school. The classroom environment is identical. Teachers give extensions. Extensions! In most cases we are not expected to have prior knowledge of material. CEGEP is basically high school with breaks and less homework.

I love the Communications program.

teachers need to space out their assignments over a longer period, because as they say two weeks is enough theoretically but not when we have 7 other teachers who are saying the same thing, so we end up having 2-3 weeks to hand in anywhere from 5 to 7 assignments that are worth 20% or more.

iMacs in my program would be amazing! I love apple products and after saving up like crazy for my iMac at home, I find it difficult to work on anything else.

the program is great. Teachers should try to be more comprehensible for the assignments and work .

I love the program I'm in.

I have heard that the new Biology group work system is disliked by the science students. This is a system where groups watch video presentations and answer questions on a piece of paper. The teacher simply walks around as a supervisor and makes sure students engage their work.

On a personal level, I knew that Vanier Music was going to be stressful and difficult. Outside school, I have duties that are time consuming and important for the sake of my family.

... courses fair.

I think that there are many compulsory subjects that are overloading us with a lot of assignments and homework and information and this affects how we perform in our actual program of interest, especially when they are heavy load programs like nursing.

I was a little disappointed with the course selection for continuing education this semester. Hopefully, I will be able to take 4 courses take semester to be able to finish my attestation. Thank you.

We should be able to change program courses which are automatically assigned each session.

Should be easier to bring the r-score higher. The teachers should help the students to obtain high marks and help them succeed since the first semester.

Life is hard for students who doesn't have much time to be dedicated in their program because of situations that pulls them back like family problems, money issues and time management. I just wish I could reset my mindset to zero.

Page 8: Current Student Survey (2012 Cohort) · The gym facilities, computer facilities, and student services offered are generally excellent and uncomplicated to access. The campus is very

Current Student Survey - Comments on Questions 2142 & 2176

Most of my answers apply mainly to this semester alone, and more precisely one course: Nursing and Surgery. The expectations and workload for that one course is absolutely ridiculous. Someone has to tell them to change that course.

The new physics active learning is troubling some of us, me included. I think it is a great idea, though the teacher should be able to cooperate with it and still be able to teach. I have not learnt anything in physics and my test went really bad because of the fact i had nothing to study from.

I think some of the content I'm learning in nursing is useless, and never see actual nurses in hospitals use them.

HSG science is a scam

"My experience at Vanier has prepared me well for the workplace." the reason why I strongly disagree is because most of my previous colleagues have told me that all of what you learnt in computer science in Vanier, is basic knowledge of computer language. Everything that they needed to know for their stage was something they learned by themselves.

The micropublishing and hypermedia program offers a few good courses. However, I believe that it could be even better if some other topics related to the industry were taught such as photography and printing. Finally, our program only has Windows to work with and in the real world many companies are asking for people who are knowledgeable about Macs. I know it's a huge investment but the reality of it all is that students have to know how to use both operating systems.

... no longer having to take research methods in Cegep!

Early Childhood Education is technically a study from 0-8 years of age. As much as I love the program, I just feel that the three years of studying it had mostly focus on the age groups of 18 months to 5 years of age. I just wish that in the future, there will more access and ways to be creative on studying on the age groups of infants and children at 6-8 years of age. Perhaps a stage on afterschool programs in elementary, and having an infant-toddler course????

I believe the music program is incredibly hard, and we should be exempt, or at least have easier general courses.

My biggest annoyance is the fact that there is way too much work to do with very little time to do it.

Need to improve the preparation for university.

English I find needs to have better teachings on how to write essays. Being in the nursing program and even after four years at Vanier I do not know how to write a proper essay.

I think that more courses should be made available so that students can take a full course load.

I think there are way too many courses all happening at one time which makes it hard for some students, especially those with disabilities or learning difficulties. I'd prefer to have intercessions & intensives all year… or take only a couple of courses at once because those are the courses I learn best in.

Improve the system how schedules are organized in the music program

I do not like the way we are graded. We are graded on what we memorized for the test, not what we know.

Schedules suck. I'm behind in general education courses and will now have to spend a semester or 2 extra because of useless English because it doesn't fit into my schedule with the courses I'm given by the school. A college should be able to organize schedules properly. I should at least be able to get my program done on time and not have to take extra semesters. And now I have to pay for that bullshit.

Page 9: Current Student Survey (2012 Cohort) · The gym facilities, computer facilities, and student services offered are generally excellent and uncomplicated to access. The campus is very

it was very difficult for nursing students to add any additional courses on their schedules which increases our level of stress and delays our graduation. This semester specifically, there were only two English classes available to us…

Many examples that the teachers give in class and in test/quizzes are harder and more challenging than the one's in the physics textbook (physics textbook currently in use, loose-paper version)

A lot of activities for students usually occurs during universal break. As a nursing student, this limits opportunities for socialization with other Vanier students due to clinical days; therefore somewhat isolating us and diminishing the feeling of being part of the greater Vanier student population as a whole. Not being able to participate in regular school activities can become demoralizing.

Statistical Information Comments relating to the theme: Academics & Schedules

Number of comments on this theme 40

Percentage of overall comments corresponding to this theme 10.2%

Percentage of "satisfaction" comments 15%

Percentage of "concerns" comments 75%

Percentage of other comments corresponding to this theme 10%

Interpretation and Analysis

For the most part (75%), comments shared concern. Despite a certain degree of diversity in these concerns, six areas stand out:

course overload (music, nursing, cont-ed)

evaluation (cont-ed, other)

limited choice for course selection (cont-ed, other)

instructional strategies and tools (physics - Webworks, active learning)

scheduling (affecting course selection and limiting socialization within the College)

Course/program content (nursing, micropublishing, early education, HSG science)

The statements that correspond to this theme are: Level of difficulty of course; diversity in learning activities; and level of challenge of program. The quantitative answers

collected seem to concur with the opinions on this part of the survey. While students' view in regard to the importance of these statements were not overly homogeneous (STD

values: 2.01; 2.03; 1.99 respectively), they were slightly more uniform in regard to satisfaction (STD values: 1.85; 1.99; and 1.96) stating only average satisfaction for diversity of

learning activities and level of challenge (7.11; 7.13), but very low satisfaction for level of difficulty of the courses (6.72).

3. PERSONNEL SATISFACTION CONCERNS OTHER I love Vanier college. The teachers are generally really good, they are caring and mostly know what they are talking about. Some teachers can even make a very boring class (ie. Research Methods) and turn it into something that has a little more interest. The Learning Center, Student Services, Academic Advising. Everybody who works here (teachers, staff etc.) are very nice and they want the students to succeed and I believe that that is very important.

I find that academic advising need to help suggest ways for you to achieve your goals instead of telling you in an indirect way that your goals will never be obtainable. When its yourself that will decided you future not them.

Instead of just asking the teachers, why don't you just make a surprise inspection of a class at a random time during the semester. There you would be able to see what the teachers do when they have their tenure and don't care about students anymore.

The younger teachers may not have the same experience as the older ones, but they are more capable or relating to their students.

Every time I've been to Academic Advising I've been completely dissatisfied. They are always rude, and come off as if they have no idea how to help you or as if they don't care to. They never helped me. They actually gave me the wrong information. Also, the computer rooms don't mention ANYWHERE that you cannot use the computers for leisure. Nowhere. Yet I was asked to get off my station by a security guard because I was on Facebook. He asked for my ID card and wrote my name down on his piece of paper. I asked him what the problem was and he told me that I wasn't allowed to be on Facebook Really? half the screens in that room had Facebook, Youtube or some sort of website on There are absolutely no signs that say that I am not allowed to be on Facebook. If it's such a big deal, maybe there should be signs everywhere in the room. There isn't. He told me it was in the rules. I asked him what rules? and he told me he wasn't sure. That's pathetic. The fact that I was kicked off my 1 hour station because I was on Facebook, while everyone else was, is absolutely ridiculous. If I have a 3 hour break and I finish my homework at school, I will go in the computer lab for an hour and go on Facebook and relax if I want to. I don't care. Your library always INVITES US to join them on Facebook anyway. So that is full of shit. Completely dissatisfied with most of the services at Vanier.

An evaluation of the teachers teaching a course.

All of the art teachers are wonderful...

... except for the current teacher of the ________ classes - no experience with the medium (forces us to paint on sheets of paper and will fail us for using canvas, makes us mix water with regular acrylic paint), does not explain techniques or methods, unenlightening projects such as to 'paint shapes' with no reference, the result is on par with a child's finger painting; unhelpful, absent often and usually not even in the classroom.

I recommend putting in place online surveys of teachers instead of being in class.

The people in administration are very helpful. The teachers so far are very knowledgeable and caring.

This semester I have 2 teachers who do not properly teach their material. One of the teachers has difficulty speaking English which makes it very difficult for the students to understand.

Great teachers.

You really need to check with some teachers in the computer science department. Most of them just read of slides during a 2 hour lecture class. I mean, if that is going to be the whole lecture class, reading with no explanation what so ever, why not just post the slide on the website and let us read it by ourselves at home, instead of making us go to class and suffer 3 hour breaks because of the bad scheduling done by the computer science department, which is forced upon us.

Good teachers in SCC On occasion, the staff in certain departments such as academic advising and student services have not been very cooperative.

Difficult to give a score of 1-10 for teachers helpfulness and availability during office hours because it differs from teacher to teacher, but in general they are very good!

Student services and academic advisors are rude and do not take time to speak with you, they want you out as fast as possible.

Teachers are great, highly skilled and devoted. For the teachers not all are very helpful after the class hours if I go and approach them they would refuse to talk which I think is not good.

Teachers are attentive and willing to help students to successfully achieve their courses.

Some teachers are very unqualified to teach because of their lack of ability to communicate.

The teachers in general are very good at their work minus the occasional teacher that has a negative impact on his students. I recommend putting in place online surveys of teachers instead of being in class.

For our program, teachers should be evaluated more because a lot of them are either unclear in their teaching methods, or do not seem to really make an effort.

Teachers care more than in high school about our grades. They give extensions. Extensions!

I found that the one time I visited the Academic Advisor they were not very helpful. Some of the courses I have taken in the French and Social Sciences had teachers who seemed to 'phoning in' their jobs

Great people and helpful staff. Teachers should try to be more comprehensible for the assignments and work and they should listen to the students more.

Teachers accessible.

When I went to the registrar's office concerning my probation they treated me like I was a worthless human being. I never felt so disrespected in my life. After I having spoken to my fellow students concerning the my incident I came to realize I was not the only one affected by this contemptuous department.

Like any institution with a large teaching staff, there are some teachers who are ideal and some who tend to disappoint. Overall, the teaching staff (that I have had experiences with) has been fortunately quite fair and knowledgeable.

The teachers in physics have a very, very hard time explaining things. I understand because physics is complex to explain, but all the teachers seem to have such a hard time with it.

A lot of great and professional teachers

teachers' performance should be more closely monitored. They all teach using very different methods and some of them are absolutely mediocre. And by some of them I mean _____.

The nurse is sympathetic.

Vanier College needs to spend time thinking about who to hire before accepting employees because some teachers really don't know how to teach and should pretty much lose their job.

I love the Communications program, I find the teachers extremely inspiring.

some teachers could be more competent. Most of all, the worst part of my program, is the program coordinator, who is probably the less coordinated and organized staff member in the entire program.

Teachers who actually care about the education given to their students.

I feel that Vanier has put me down a lot, especially Academic Advising. They would tell me not to try and get into Health, it will just not happen, and here I am, in Health at the moment. Thanks to my determination I was able to do what I had to and not listen to them. The registers office helped more than A.D.

Gracious staff. Get better physics teachers.

95% of the teachers I've had are wonderful and caring. Does the administration exist? Students are unaware.

The teachers are excellent. Quality of teachers is very variant. The nursing program... great teachers that are

always there to help you and that care about you.

Some teachers should be evaluated as they do not fulfil class needs to material and subject matter.

I've had many positive experiences with the staff at Vanier. The learning center staff are useless and rude.

The teachers are nice and supportive and want you to succeed.

people in H building seems to not like their job, the service is really bad person will sit on his desk instead of getting up and coming to talk to you face to face.

However, Vanier does have a few wonderful teachers.

...However, on occasion, the staff in certain departments such as academic advising and student services have not been very cooperative.

teachers who actually care about the education given to their students.

______, the academic advisor, truly helped me set my plan for my academic future.

Statistical Information

Interpretation and Analysis

This section received slightly more positive feedback (49.1%) than comments about concerns (45.5%). Satisfaction is mainly attributed to teachers who are described as caring,

devoted, highly knowledgeable, and accessible. While college staff is mentioned as "helpful", several comments reveal less than positive sentiments for Academic Advising,

Student Services, Registrars, and the Learning Center. The comments that bring out this concern are too few in number to give a concise picture how widespread those

sentiments are; however, it may be hypothesized that since interaction between specific students and the personnel of the aforementioned services is sporadic, valuable

relationships, which generally reveal qualities such as those students ascribe to teachers, cannot be formed. Therefore, it is not impossible that student opinion is not always

completely informed.

Findings from the quantitative parts of the survey about the services of Academic Advising, Student Services, resource centers, Learning Center, and the Registrar's show that

while they are ranked quite high in importance, (8.55; 8.25; 8.22; 8.19; and 8.16 respectively), student opinion is far from being homogeneous (STD values: 2.06; 2.05; 2,16;

2.16; and 2.06 respectively). In terms of satisfaction of these services, one notices that scores decrease (dramatically, in the case of the Registrar's) (7.12; 7.61; 7.86; 7.79; and

6.88 respectively). However, one also notices that big decreases in satisfaction (compared to the value of importance) are also linked to big increases in STD values (2.55; 2.08;

1.92; 1.95; and 2.49 respectively).

The above seems indicative of the need for more thorough investigation regarding the quality of the aforementioned services. While it cannot be denied that some

dissatisfaction is evident, the degree of this dissatisfaction cannot be accurately predicted with the data that is available at the moment.

Despite the accolades teachers received in this section, there is also discontent to some extent, mainly about the following issues:

linguistic limitations that appear to hinder teaching

difficulty in delivery of course material

limited repertoire of effective teaching techniques

The quantitative data for the statements related to teachers show that scores about the importance of teacher's knowledge, teacher's linguistic abilities; teacher's way of

explaining subject matter; teacher's way of explaining assignments; and teacher's level of care are very high (9.21; 9.05; 8.98; 8.88; and 8.65 respectively) while student opinion

is very homogeneous (STD values: 1.37;1.49; 1.49; 1.61; and 1.85 respectively). In regard to satisfaction, values drop (7.93; 8.02; 7.05; 7.02; 7.30) as STD values increase (1.91;

1.99; 1.94;2.02; and 2.20) suggesting that perhaps concern is rather isolated, and therefore easily addressed.

A final point to take into consideration is that while Vanier College teachers have high academic credentials, many (if not most) have not had the benefit of formal teacher

training from a university, and as such, it is understandable that some may be less familiar with learning theories, and comfortable with only a limited number of teaching

techniques. Thus, it would not be unwise for Vanier College to make available to those who feel a need for it, either training sessions or other types of support, or mentoring.

4. SERVICES, CENTERS, LIBRARY

SATISFACTION CONCERNS OTHER

Very satisfied with all the service offered by Vanier College since the past year.

The library should have more books that are up to date it's wasting space keeping books that no one will use but it is good how they have moved the newer books on the 3rd floor. I find that academic advising needs to help suggest ways for you to achieve your goals instead of telling you in an indirect way that your goals will never be obtainable. When its yourself that will decided your future not them.

I don't use a lot of the services I'm being asked to rate so I just put 5 for neutral.

I'm overall satisfied with the services offered at Vanier and I am glad I chose this college for my post-high school studies.

...the wait for printing is crazy…health services is difficult to see John because of limited schedule and stages for Nursing program don't correspond.

I have never been in the Learning Center which is why I answered N/A.

Vanier has offered great services over the three years that I have been here. The ... student services offered are generally excellent.

Quite honestly, probably one of the things that disappoints me the most about Vanier College is the lack of help actual available to students. The school has so many things in place to promote student success, however, these things are not always truly able to help. For example, I am currently taking secondary 4 math and secondary 5 chemistry. One day, myself and a fellow classmate decided to go to the math and science resource room to get some help with some questions we had. According to the signs and what teachers have told us, we are to go sit down and a tutor will come around and help you. We sat there for approximately 45 minutes, and not once did we even see someone who seemed to be a tutor walking around. Perhaps we just went at a bad time? Either way, there should always be tutors available there who are walking around and willing to help students. The tutors should also wear name tags or something so that they can be easily identified. There should also be more tutors at busier times such as around noon where many people have breaks for lunch.

I have used the Academic Advising services and the Math and Science center tutoring services and can say that they have been a great help during my stay at Vanier.

Every class that demand a book, over the value of 50$, should be available in the library for at least a two hour loan. I, personally can't afford to buy 4 books of a 90$, 52$, 32$ and 110$ value to be bought and used for a single semester.

The services are very good, The Learning Center, Student Services, Academic Advising.

That said, I found that the one time I visited the Academic Advisor they were not very helpful.

As I said I'm pleased with the college and its services. Completely dissatisfied with most of the services at Vanier.

I would really suggest the Math and Science center as it is a good work place, I was here for two years however I had a switch from social to computerized last year. Whilst I took high school programs such as physics and chemistry, which enabled me to learn more. From that my experience of vanier is much more broad in understand.

services need to be more available, walk in's should be allowed an services available need to be advocated and seem more so students know where to get help without run around.

Generally speaking the services offered by the college are quite good… MSC needs more computers and tutors, as I find personally

I can honestly say I have not had any trouble with the services provided at Vanier... The library search engine can also be a bit tedious at times.

Overall, very satisfied of the service provided by the college.

All services are good at Vanier… Library's book selection is diverse and respectable.

Interpretation and Analysis

Comments are somewhat diverse in this section. While 52.2% of comments show appreciation for the services Vanier College makes available, 39.1% report concerns that touch

the following areas:

Library (selection of books; search engine)

Accessibility of services (walk-ins)

Centers (tutors)

In reference to the library, one particular remark/request stands out. One student comments that since textbooks tend to be rather expensive, they should be made available at

the library for students who can't afford to buy them. Another student mentions that library books need to be updated. Although the latter is an isolated comment, it may be

pertinent to add that in the recent past, a MELS initiative gave elementary and high schools across the province the opportunity to upgrade their libraries. The particular

student's comment may stem from a comparison between Vanier College's library and the library at the student's previous educational institution.

Accessibility of different services was mentioned with the request for possible walk-ins to counter scheduling issues that seem to have made it difficult, for at least one student,

to take advantage of some of the services available.

Finally, the Math and Science Center is mentioned in two comments with emphasis on shortage of tutors available to help students.

This theme cannot afford significant insight nor be correlated with the quantitative data of the statements as the comments in this section are rather limited. However, a more

thorough picture is presented regarding the human element in these services and is discussed under the heading Personnel.

5. TECHNOLOGY

Satisfaction Concerns Other

great technology and nice website. Buy more printers for the library.

make it possible to see teachers' office hours on my schedule on omnivox

The Internet at Vanier is AWFUL. So much class time is wasted because videos don't load, or only load halfway then randomly stop. Also, Vi-Fi access isn't available across the whole campus, and often, although there's a signal, it's either completely impossible to connect to Vanier's network, or you'll be "connected" but nothing will load. It's also slow, and generally behaves in an arbitrary manner that isn't very useful.

More reliable printer network would be appreciated. Omnivox should also have a bulletin board function to keep us in touch with communities such as the VSCA and club activities. It could also save paper, and reach out to more people; along with clearing up confusion about times and places.

Have more computers available for longer periods of time, 60 mins is not that long enough to get some work done on the computer.

iMacs in my program would be amazing! I love apple products and after saving up like crazy for my iMac at home, I find it difficult to work on anything else.

I am displeased with the equipment available to our program especially when compared to equipment given to other programs.

computers need to auto log out and not become locked when someone doesn't properly log out

There seems to often be problems with the printers! It is frustarting especially when u need something fast they never work.

Music Teachers should use omnivox and MIO. The computers in the computer lab could be more high speed.

Also, the computer rooms don't mention ANYWHERE that you cannot use the computers for leisure. No where. Yet I was asked to get off my station by a security guard because I was on facebook. He asked for my ID card and wrote my name down on his piece of paper. I asked him what the problem was and he told me that I wasn't allowed to be on facebook Really? half the screns in that room had facebook, youtube or some sort of website on There are absolutely no signs that say that I am not allowed to be on facebook.

The only thing I would change about my program is getting iMacs.. I have one at home…and it's so much easier and faster to work with I really wish our labs had them. :( Mac's are really important in Micropublishing and Hypermedia.. And teachers say they don't like them because they're old fashioned and don't know how to use them.. but they can keep their computer... just give the students Macs :P please :)

Never any room at the library and the wait for printing is crazy…

With the advancement in technology in this era Vanier is far behind.

There should be more computers available and the usage time should be extended. It is impossible for things to be done within an hours time. A minimum of 2 hours should be permitted.

It is very difficult to understand and finish an assignment when there's a time limit restriction on the computers.

There should just be more technology available for the students.

Page 18: Current Student Survey (2012 Cohort) · The gym facilities, computer facilities, and student services offered are generally excellent and uncomplicated to access. The campus is very

I believe that we there should be more computers in the school, and more computers for fast printing as well. The price for printing should also decrease.

The labs are more accessible and available in the main building. As for the N-building it takes more time to get a computer and the line ups are long.

Computer Science labs should be equipped with industry-standard hardware. Not enough resources in the N building (example computers accessible at all times)

MSC needs more computers and tutors, as I find personally. sometimes the projector doesn't work on floor 5 of the B building

Equipment in Computer Science labs should be up to date.

Also, we need computers! I think it would be really better if we could take the laptops out of the library but not out of the school. like instead of beeping by the library doors, it beeps when we take it outside the school building. also, we need more computer labs in the N building for students to have access to whenever they need to.

I believe that the computers in the labs should be outfitted with industry-level software/hardware, seeing how we are in a program leading into working on industry-level computers for bit-time corporations. Also the square screens in lab D-210 are ridiculous and should be replaced immediately.

More computers would be useful

The BSET resource room should get better computer.

Anytime I walk into the library and want a lap top or even a computer to do my work, there never are any.

extra computer space is strongly needed as many students who are on break together need computers to get their work done.

I think Vanier really needs new computers.

There is a lack of printers available and computers.

The overhead projectors don't always work, and they are stained, making it hard to take down notes.

There should be more labtops available to students.

Also, all rooms should have projectors that work because in this day and age there shouldn't be problems with such things.

for the printer go back to the old way where you put your id card in the scanner it was so much better than the new printing system

During the period of the exams, no seats nor computers are to be found.

Library and school WiFi need the most attention and effect a large number of students. WiFi is spotty in numerous areas, and the 30-minute repeated sign in process is very disruptive to student workflow.

The new 1-hour rule for the computer lab (ex: in the N building) is really not okay. I find myself sitting in an empty computer lab at times and cannot complete my work because my time is up. Maybe an hour and a half or it being untimed like the previous years is a better strategy.

Computers should not be limited for students to only use for an hour…

It would be great to have photocopiers a few places in the college, as well as more computers so there could be more availability to do projects and homework during breaks.

The lack of computers and overall limited space in the Nursing Resource lounge is very disappointing Computers do not work at all,

Not enough place in library, both silent study & computers.

They could use more computers in the library.

More functional computers are needed…

Having more computers available in the N-building would be great.

More accessible computers,

Computers and printing in the N building is always full at lunch time

Should be more computers in the resources center of N second floor, business area

Sometimes, the computers are not available for us to use.

should have more printers, because the printers are always very busy.

Students in animal health often have to do animal files, but there are only 2 computers available for such purpose (one in the treatment room and one in pre-op). Students often have to wait for a long time before they have access to one of those 2 computers.

Also, we need more computers in Vanier. They are not enough for the amount of students in the school.

Printers around the school do not always work properly. The printers do not always prints all my documents, but still charges me.

The music students barely have one class with the right music programs to use, and there are not enough computers. We share the lab with the sound engineering program.

need actual working printers.

The library search engine can also be a bit tedious at times.

More computers to use, the ability to remove a rented laptop from the library.

more computer rooms

The library should have more computers available for students, especially during busy hours.

I think that there isn't enough computers for the amount of students that there is in the school

we need more computers in the cad labs and the labs need to have longer operating hours.

The printers are too expensive and not accessible in the N building.

More computers and library space would be nice.

Percentage of overall comments corresponding to this theme 16.6%

Percentage of "satisfaction" comments 1.5%

Percentage of "concerns" comments 81.5

Percentage of other comments corresponding to this theme 16.9%

Interpretation and Analysis

This theme groups the second largest set of comments thus revealing strong emotions on the issue. It is also noteworthy that only one student shared satisfaction while the vast

majority stated concern (there were also a few comments that were simply personal reflections). The following points were most commonly discussed:

More computers in the library and computer labs but without the 1-hour limitation

More computers in resource centers (MSC, BSET, Nursing Resource Lounge, Music, Animal Health)

Better technology in the classrooms (Projectors, Internet connection)

More printers available at a lesser cost

More industry-level technology available to students in technology programs

Although only two students mentioned "more functional computers" in the comments, it may be advantageous for the College to look into the possibility of providing more

servicing for computers and perhaps even technical support to students, a number of which may possibly be attributing a technical inability they may have encountered when

logging on to a computer, to a non-functional computer.

Other isolated remarks include the wish that Omnivox's use be optimized by displaying teachers' office hours; the hope that Mac computers will be introduced; and a request for

music teachers to use Omnivox more often.

In reference to the regulation that limits use of computers to a specific amount of time, a student deplored the fact he/she had to leave his/her station after one hour when the

entire lab was empty at the time, while another student remarked that the warning "30-minute" sign was rather disruptive. Finally, the question of appropriate use of College

computers should also be addressed as not everyone seems to be aware of the rules, as one comment revealed.

Quantitative results for the statement: availability of computers in the college show that satisfaction levels are very low (6.77) but that STD was very high (2.47) indicating that

there is polarization of opinions, possibly of experiences too. This data seem to agree with students' comments, summarized above.

Data on the statement equipment in computer lab indicate a fairly high satisfaction (7.71) but opinions are not overly homogeneous as the STD shows (1.98) possibly reflecting

the different needs that computer users have, as well as the fact some students are not finding the equipment advanced enough (i.e technology students who comment on the

need for industry-level technology).

Finally, data on web site showed that opinions differ both on importance and satisfaction levels; however, no further insight can be obtained as there was only one (positive)

comment made on this issue.

6. VANIER EXPERIENCE

Satisfaction Concerns Other

Vanier generally presents a good environment to its students.

Some things at Vanier needs to change. The students should be heard more, and to voice their opinion. Students should feel peaceful when attending school, but I don't find everyone is. Students should have more of a right to speak up, and voice their opinion, without the penalty towards them.

The majority of students that I meet at Vanier are slackers. I am not sure why, but a lot of students ask ridiculous questions and don't do the assigned work. The school is crowded and I see many students wasting the opportunity. There should be harsher measurements in place to insure that students who don't apply themselves are not taking up valuable space in the college. This is post-secondary education, and it is competitive.

I love Vanier college. The teachers are generally really good, they are caring and mostly know what they are talking about. Some teachers can even make a very boring class (ie. Research Methods) and turn it into something that has a little more interest. Everybody who works here (teachers, staff etc.) are very nice and they want the students to succeed and I believe that that is very important.

I wish that more was done to encourage students to become more involved in school life. I personally love coming to school, and greatly enjoy the Vanier community. However, I feel that my experience at Vanier could be made more complete if there was more done to encourage students to join clubs, and to make these clubs both more appealing and more inviting. For example, in high school, I was very involved in student leadership and our student union. However, when I came to Vanier, I never felt as if I was welcome to join the VCSA or other student clubs. These clubs feel like they are for exclusive members of the Vanier community, and I have never really felt welcome.

I have to admit it, last year I didn't really like Vanier. I was in the double DEC music and social science program and I felt like Vanier was very impersonal. But this semester, I switched program to something I really enjoy, I'm part of the cheetahs rugby team and I'm also part of a trip to France for the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens, and I can say that I like Vanier so much more. The key is to find an activity you like at Vanier and commit to it This way, you make new friends and this way, Vanier isn't just your school but a place that gives you the chance to accomplish things you like.

Having been to Dawson previously I was pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere Vanier exudes. It's a school that feels comfortable and most importantly it feels safe.

I had encountered an especially rude employee (responsible for admissions) from the registrar's office, at the time of my arrival here, who spoke to me in such a disrespectful tone, while repeatedly interrupting. A friend of mine has also dealt with as similar situation. Lacking politeness in such a way should be strictly unacceptable.

For the moment I don’t have anything to say. The Vanier college is trying their level best to improve their technology and as well as all the services and the students spaces as well.

I honestly really enjoy Vanier as a school and very happy I chose to come here.

I dislike school and Vanier does not spread enough information to make it a pleasurable experience.

The experience at Vanier has proven to be well beyond my expectations. Coming back to Vanier has been a positive experience and one that I wish to pursue. I definitely plan on taking more courses. Thank you.

I have learnt a lot at Vanier. I believe that I am getting a great education and I have grown as a person since I have started my studies here. the VCSA don't do cheesy event because it retarded.

Vanier is a great school. The r-score is something that I really don't like because if the person has a bad r-score, it doesn't mean that the student has poor grades at school. It simply means that he has been compared to other students, which hurt students in a number of ways. Like for instance, not being accepted at the university of our choice. It brings us down because sometimes we don't deserve a certain R-score. In fact, we might have studied a lot during a whole year but because os one course like English or gym, the teacher who doesn't really know us well, evaluated us in a wrong way. Which may have caused us a poor general R-score. This hurt a student a lot. Quebec should change this way of evaluating students, which is not right.

Overall I'm very satisfied.

A lot of activities for students usually occurs during universal break. As a nursing student, this limits opportunities for socialization with other Vanier students due to clinical days; therefore somewhat isolating us and diminishing the feeling of being part of the greater Vanier student population as a whole. Not being able to participate in regular school activities can become demoralizing.

on general the college is JUST OKAY! With the advancement in technology in this era Vanier is far behind. Also, another thing What is the foundation? Every semester I see that box checked for a donation to this foundation that I never heard of or seen. I would be definitely HAPPY to see the box unchecked and if I see it so fit I will check it myself. I am hoping things will change.

Vanier College is great!

It is really complicated to get courses credited in Vanier. :( No activities organizes for all the students of the DEC so it doesn't feel "like home" or that we know each other that much except our own group.

Vanier is a great community to be a part of, however there is always room for change!

Good environment, always encouraging.

I feel that Vanier has put me down a lot, especially Academic Advising. They would tell me not to try and get into Health, it will just not happen, and here I am, in Health at the moment. Thanks to my determination I was able to do what I had to and not listen to them. The registers office helped more than A.D. Another thing, the new physics active learning is troubling some of us, me included. I think it is a great idea, though the teacher should be able to cooperate with it and still be able to teach. I have not learnt anything in physics and my test went really bad because of the fact i had nothing to study from. Vanier is a great school, though some things just do not motivate students.

I am glad I chose this college for my post-high school studies.

I think the school needs to support its students more outside of the classroom. I do feel at home at Vanier, but this is largely due to the VCSA and clubs, not the college itself. Before I got involved in those, it was just a place to come, go to class, and then leave. When large decisions are made, I feel like the students are not being thought of first. I find the to be an afterthought after the administration and staff.

Vanier Cheetahs is family.

Vanier is just a great College. Studying at Vanier College was a great experience to me until my grades dropped. The different courses didn't help me in finding a way into my future life.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the resources the Vanier College provides. I haven't had any problems thus far.

After I leave Cegep I would know nothing more than what I did after leaving high school. This experience has just been an emotion rollercoaster that will have been all for nothing. Knowing E & M or calculus 2 or any of the other useless physics or math course I did will not advance me to where I want to get to. Instead Cegep, specifically Vanier, has only held me back and make me question whether or not I wasn't to do the one job I've dreamt of since I was 6 because it's not worth this aggravation and frustration.

Generally, I enjoyed my studies at Vanier and will recommend it to my friends.

On the whole everything at Vanier seems to be updated. You are doing a really good job at making every floor new for the students and as well as an appearance for Vanier's status.

Vanier is just great. Fantastic school, that I would recommend to others.

Vanier is a great college. I live far but I chose this particular college instead of Champlain and Dawson, which are relatively closer to my house, because of the atmosphere and teachers who actually care about the education given to their students.

... otherwise the college is very helpful thanks a lot.

Overall, Vanier is a great college. I like the fact that Vanier is always trying to have events in the auditorium.

Great College...

Overall, I strongly believe Vanier College is an excellent Institution which has allowed me to better integrate into a whole new environment. The Vanier College community was, without any doubt, and excellent one.

Overall Vanier is my preferred choice in colleges. That's why I am a student here, and not anywhere else.

Vanier is a great college. I live far but I chose this particular college instead of Champlain and Dawson, which are relatively closer to my house, because of the atmosphere and teachers who actually care about the education given to their students.

I love my college!

Vanier has truly made me a better student/person, and it has changed me in better ways. Vanier is a place with enough support where I could truly be myself, whereas there was less support at my high school.

I love Vanier.

Vanier overall is a good Cegep.

Overall the schools environment is very pleasing and helps the student succeed.

Vanier College is awesome!!!

overall great experience

Vanier did allow me to grow as a person and especially in my education! Thank you.

Vanier College is a great environment for studies.

I recommend Vanier because of its helpful studying atmosphere and gracious staff.

Happy I chose Vanier.

I have enjoyed my time at Vanier.

As I said I'm pleased with the college

Vanier College is a great college to attend.

Overall, Vanier College is a great place to acquire many of these skills.

Vanier is a great place

Great school

The Vanier College experience I had was great. T

Overall pleased with the college.

Overall, I had a good experience at Vanier. I would definitely recommend this Cegep for any graduating high school student, French or English. What I enjoy the most was the multiple ethnicities at Vanier and the friendly environment.

Vanier is a great community to be a part of, however there is always room for change!

I am a mature student, 50 plus, and my experience at Vanier has been excellent. The students and faculty have made me feel very included and welcomed. This has been a positive, and fulfilling influence in my life.

I truly hope the dynamism that is found within Vanier does not leave over time, as it enhances the sociability of others, and makes the student body open to itself. The positive energy in this college is what proves it to be a great school.

I am grateful to have come here to get and education and feel prepared for the future. I have changed as a person in my time here.

My time at Vanier has been great! As a west-islander, I am glad not to have chosen John Abbott College.

I like Vanier college, I didn't like it at first but I love it now. I love the location, even though it requires a good amount of walking it's easy and fast to get to

Vanier is a great school…there are many activities that take place at Vanier, just wish I had more time to participate in them

Having already done my DEC in Animal Health Technology, I'm very glad to be back at Vanier College and I notice the minor and major changes to enhance the learning experience for all the new students. I'm quite pleased with everything overall.

Vanier College is amazing when it comes to the bilingual atmosphere.

To me, Vanier is a good Cegep, not only because of what I mentioned, but also because going there is a great opportunity to study in English, However, I find that we (our association) should be more involved (and not with companies like Playboy) toward issues that are meaningful to the students future or the well-being of our community/society.

Vanier has its ups and downs about it but besides that it’s a good school.

Congratulations, Vanier offers a great learning environment and an extremely affordable price. Keep up the good work!!! Thank you so much.

Vanier is a good CEGEP

Overall a good school to attend.

Statistical Information Comments relating to the theme: Vanier Experience

Number of comments on this theme 66

Percentage of overall comments corresponding to this theme 16.8%

Percentage of "satisfaction" comments 84.8%

Percentage of "concerns" comments 10.6%

Percentage of other comments corresponding to this theme 4.5%

Interpretation and Analysis

The overwhelming majority of comments were positive (84.8%). Students reported feeling safe and happy, stated that Vanier College teachers are caring, and commented on

the College's helpfulness and warm atmosphere. Comments also exuded a sense of belonging as shown in the example of the student who referred to the College as "my

school".

The 10.6% of comments that showed concern were varied in nature and referred to issues such as an encounter with a rude employee; a student's impression that students are

not sufficiently listened to by the College; and the lack of activities that cross the boundaries of individual programs, which would allow students of different programs to

become acquainted.

It is very telling that the biggest number of overall comments referred to Vanier Experience. This becomes particularly important when considered in context. Comments were

harvested from two questions: Comments and Additional Comments. Right after students finished answering a set of 24 Likert scale questions about school (academics, services,

physical space...) they were asked to give comments. Nowhere in the 24 questions was there any mention about students' experience at Vanier that could have indirectly elicited

comments on this theme. The comments students shared appear to be genuine feelings that they harbour about their school, and which they felt they had to share. For the

most part, these comments were positive!

Unlike the previous set of comments, the set of additional comments was obtained right after students answered a series of questions that discussed aspects of students' Vanier

experience. Consequently, it is no surprise that even more comments regarding students' feelings about Vanier surfaced − once again, overwhelmingly positive.

7. CAFETERIA SERVICES Satisfaction Concerns Other

Lastly I think the school cafeteria lacks big time, while other colleges have very big and comfortable cafeterias, our has no variety, is overpriced, sometimes sells old food (personal experience) and is not easily accessible (doesn't accept other methods of payment besides cash)

I think Vanier needs café sort-of-places to study (second cup and Starbucks style-comfy, a little quiet, friendly) inside or beside the school. It would be great. Have better staffs in the cafeteria, and offer better food.

Cafeteria food is too expensive

Also the cafeteria is really gross, unhealthy and expensive.

An important question would be how student feel about the actual cafeterias, where you buy food… I find the service is very bad, even when you speak in French (the people working in the cafs are French) they're still pretty cold and mean… A caf run by students would be awesome!!

The food in the cafeteria is not very good.

I think the main thing that Vanier lacks is a healthy cafeteria that cares about the students health and food quality.

The cafeteria menu prices are outrageous for the value of the food. It would be more beneficial to the students if the cafeteria offered a greater variety of healthy food at affordable prices.

I feel that employees at the cafeteria are not really friendly and some can be unsanitary at times. I have seen one handle my food and money at the same time, without wearing gloves or washing their hands. Also, they seem to be really busy all the time. I think the cafeteria should have more employees, each having their own tasks, and being nicer and more polite.

The cafeteria's prices needs to be reduced.

Not enough choices in cafeteria to eat.

food quality in cafeteria is not that good and its expensive for student, I mean certain commodities.

Food price at school are WAY TO HIGH

The food in the N building is disgusting and not nutritious! The staff members have no customer service, and do not follow NFSTP procedures. After working 10 years in the restauration sector, I have seen many infractions, and I am highly disappointed how the cafeteria employees in the N building handle our food!

The cafeteria in the N building doesn't have enough variability and closes too early!

The Cafeterias is very unsatisfactory. I wish the food, the general image and quality of the cafeterias would be better.

caf food is a bit expensive

To have a healthier selection on the lunch menu, while reducing the price increase of food items each semester.

The cafeteria is too commercial (Pizza Pizza? Starbucks?) We need real, healthy food!

The cafeteria at the N-building is just fast food…Not really healthy! Or we have to travel to the main building…

Vanier College should probably think about the prices in the cafeteria. They are a lot of things that are expensive for nothing.

8. OTHER

NO SMOKING ON THE N BUILDING PATH! don't wait until last minute to do your work

Some people should really think about not smoking on the n building path. no comments

The college is well organized but having my program in the N building is really a drag, especially during winter.

Interesting survey however, some question were a little confusing.

There is no need to waste money on electrical signs that say "Vanier College" in the common areas. We all know we attend Vanier College, there is no need to blatantly advertise for it… The elevators in the N building are used WAY more than they need to be. People should be using the stairs unless physically unable or encumbered by supplies. There is absolutely no call for line-ups in front of the elevators. No comments

Give the vcsa less funds and as a result give them less power. great survey

Since my program is situated in the N building, and I have completed all of my general courses, I don't have the need to go to the main building, and miss out on campus information that is only posted in the main building, and never in the N building.

Also, another thing What is the foundation? Every semester I see that box checked for a donation to this foundation that I never heard of or seen. I would be definitely HAPPY to see the box unchecked and if I see it so fit I will check it myself. I am hoping things will change.

I am disappointed with the parking. I was told that because I am in the Continuing Education Program ECE I am not allowed to receive a monthly pass. We should not be excluded! There is plenty of parking!! nice survey

give us back free parking we pay to come here so we should have the right to park on the Vanier parking lot for free

This survey is pretty similar to the one we do at school at the end of the semester.

security services could be quicker at responding. What is this for?

With the Vanier student body ever growing, I really hope the administration overhauls the student parking procedures and possibly implement a new system. The stress and frustration of parking takes a toll Let me win the ipod touch plz?

The hours of operation for the book store are extremely inconvenient for night course students. Especially students who work such as myself. A 9-5 daily work schedule proves impossible to make it within open hours, forcing me to take time off of work in order to purchase my course material. Comments about?

Again: no need for Vanier signs, and encourage use of stairs. Not really.

Please put elevators in the main building. Not really.

I wish there was more student parking at Vanier. And that it was less expensive. Parking in the area is very difficult and time consuming. I embrace public transit, but there are some days where I may need to get to school by car and I would appreciate if the school would invest in some extra spaces. no additional comment

Parking fees are ridiculously high. It is a 3H+ drive to go to school, and 7$ a day is expensive, especially since I only work part time, and most of my money goes into my car already. I hope I win one of the prizes!

stop making students who are not on the honor roll list feel stupid give me an ipod.

The elevators in the N building should not be open to all the students in order to promote healthy living habits. No additional comments

It would be GREAT, if the college can make some adjustment to cater more to the older students like myself in their 30's because there are many of us who are returning to school due to the recent economic crisis and or to change careers. I put N/A because I haven't used the services.

Teach the students what a common workplace environment is like.

The way best I study is while listening to music, & not once have I ever had a portable mini player to us for studying. One of my goals is to save enough money for an Ipod.

with scc students please consider having summer session courses for students who have not passed previous courses for the fact that it is difficult to have to wait a whole year to re-do a course. As well summer session courses will help students, like myself who have already received previous degrees, to finish at earlier times. If courses were given throughout the year it would be more beneficial.

Interesting survey however, some question were a little confusing.

What's the deal with VCSA? They seem like some big club that has a massive budget but seems to just hang out and hand out popcorn to students once in a while. Last year's election was laughable, it was just some N-caf popularity contest. No, I have none.

More reliable printer network would be appreciated. Omnivox should also have a bulletin board function to keep us in touch with communities such as the VSCA and club activities. It could also save paper, and reach out to more people; along with clearing up confusion about times and places. Survey was not very clear

The price for printing should also decrease

This survey was very interesting and I hope it will help improve our college

a lot of great...security and cafeteria cooks and cashiers. hope my contribution was helpful thank you

Small recycle bins in each classes. :)

I hope this survey will help in order to make Vanier a better place.

maybe if the student parking was less cheaper it'd be even more amazing.

Vanier College should have an App for Smartphones.

I'm very honest when I first opened this page. However, I do think if a survey that is as simple as this, it could not give a better idea about what the students really think and it would make rare things change.

I think a survey that is as simple as this, it could not bring a better idea about how students think and it will make rare things change.

Music Teachers should use Omnivox and MIO.

Involving the survey, I think that clarification is needed on certain questions when asking whether we agree or not. We need a middle button. For example, if I am uncertain, I cannot click agree or disagree, nor can I click "Not applicable" because the question applies to me, all the same.

Questions 39-44 were quite ambiguous.

Importance part is kind of ridiculous obviously everything is important especially as a

I don't know what I should write here. I come from a totally different country with a totally different education system. Maybe my point of view is going to be very personal.

This section grouped all those comments that did not have an affinity with any of the other themes. Among the comments, two points seem to pre-occupy more than one

student. These are:

Parking (too expensive, insufficient number of spaces)

Smoking (requests for prohibition of smoking on the path leading to the N-building)

Other comments of interest are: The need for a summer session for SCC students; the need to help mature students adjust with school life; and a request for quicker response

time from security personnel.

Finally, two comments on the survey draw attention and may help with the design of future surveys:

some questions were felt to be ambiguous

need for middle choice of answer (neither agree nor disagree)
