This has been described as ‘The best school prospectus I’ve seen in twenty years as a prep-school head’
Saira Shah (Greenleaves ’83) has made award-winning documentaries in some of the world’s most troubled places. Now an author and novelist, she shares a passion for words with Niamh, in her second year at Bryanston, already a political journalist in the making.

Conductor Sir Mark Elder (Forrester ’66) showed early promise as a pianist and bassoonist at Bryanston. Now Music Director of the Hallé, he works regularly with the world’s leading symphony orchestras and appears frequently in many of the most prominent international opera houses. An accomplished musician himself, former Salisbury Cathedral chorister Alex has his sights set on an organ scholarship at Oxbridge. Piano and viola – and a passion for computer science – add to the breadth of his repertoire.

The creative tradition
Creativity is important in all we do at Bryanston. As academic departments, Art, Drama, Music and Design and Technology all enjoy a strong profile in the school. It is not surprising that many Old Bryanstonians have excelled at the very highest level in these fields. What may surprise is the sheer energy, enthusiasm and ambition of so many of our pupils. Our aim is to provide the time and space, the encouragement and guidance to enable them to make their own mark on the creative life of the school and beyond. At Bryanston, there is always music. All first year pupils have an individual music lesson, whether or not they have studied a musical instrument before, and the number of weekly music lessons regularly exceeds the number of pupils in the school. There is a strong emphasis on performance and there are many opportunities for pupils to shine, covering all types of music and all levels of ability, from informal lunchtime recitals to the spectacular annual London concert. Drama is similarly lively and democratic. Anyone with talent and commitment can get involved, be it in the Junior Drama Society, the vibrant House Drama Festival, the large-scale musical production of the autumn term or the range of indoor and outdoor productions which illuminate the summer.
Bryanston’s renowned Art Department has inspired generations of pupils, including Lucian Freud, Sir Terence Conran and Sir Howard Hodgkin, as well as many others who have gone on to excel at top art schools and make lasting contributions to the artistic life of wherever they have found themselves in the world. No trip to Bryanston would be complete without a tour around the Design and Technology building to witness the energy, creativity and sheer variety of the work on show, from stained-glass windows to bespoke modern furniture, from Caterham cars to fully working guitars.
Creativity within academic subjects should not be overlooked. In science, for example, our pupils are encouraged to design and develop methods to test hypotheses in classwork and personal projects, and to visualise what is impossible to see, from the interlocking of molecules to the gravity field surrounding a black hole. The creative threads draw together in the A3 Festival, an eclectic arts festival organised and delivered to the whole school by the lower sixth year group. They begin to learn the necessary skills through their contribution to the C Festival, The sCene, two years earlier. Both events underline the importance of individual contribution to the whole school. Both create a real sense of belonging for all who take part.
“I didn’t do music before I came here but I’ve taken up the piano and I really enjoy it. I’m going to do some grades soon and keep going.”
