3. Additional Efforts related to Teaching
On January 11, 2012, I participated in a panel presentation titled "Teaching, Assessment,
and Engagement" for the Obermann Graduate Institute.
From Spring 2011 though the present I have been working on setting up an ifolio
portfolio program for our Critical Cultural Competence Certificate Program using the
ifolio program here at the University of Iowa and with consultation with Wayne Jacobsen
concerning program evaluation. This program is now being used in the foundations and
capstone courses in the certificate program in spring 2012.
In Summer 2011 I redesigned our Mexico Travel Seminar Immersion and Service
Learning course to be provided in Xicotepec, Puebla, Mexico because Study Abroad felt
that it was not safe to offer it again in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, where it has been delivered
before. I led the group of 9 students to Xicotepec in August 2011 where we had a
successful experience in the new location.
In fall semester 2010 I redesigned the graduate course in Organizational and Community
Practice and in spring 2011 I taught one section of the revised course with another faculty
member teaching the other section and using the same course outline. During the fall and
winterim2012-2013 I worked with new faculty member Megan Gilster to redesign the
class for spring semester 2013 and I am mentoring her in teaching the course.
Murty, 17
I have been active in initiatives to use new technology to deliver courses to our social
work graduate students at our various sites around the state. This semester, spring 2012, I
am delivering the Integrated Seminar in end-of-life care to students completing the end-
of=-life care field of practice using Adobe Connect to allow students in Iowa City and
Des Moines to participate and interact in the seminar. During summer 2008 I delivered
the Introductory Seminar in end-of-life care (042:254) to three sites over the Internet
using Adobe Connect. I traveled to meet with the students at each site and provided two
field trip options to make them accessible to all the students. I felt the technology was
effective for delivering this course. I learned a great deal with help from staff of
Continuing Education and plan to deliver this course again using this technology and
hope to include students from our fourth site in Sioux City. I continue to use Adobe
Connect to involve students from off campus in the final integrative seminar in end-of-
life care offered by the School of Social Work.
I agreed to pilot the same technology to deliver the Integrated Social Work Theory and
Practice I class (042:260) for students in Iowa City and Des Moines in fall 2008. I taught
14 students in Iowa City and 9 students in Des Moines. I traveled back and forth to visit
the two classes on alternate sessions. This class was less satisfactory and students
indicated that they were not pleased with the way it worked out. I am convinced that the
emphasis on practice skills in this particular class and on group process makes it less
appropriate for this kind of distance education technology. I feel that once again I learned
a great deal about using this kind of technology for delivering classes. I am an active
member of the School of Social Work’s technology committee which is exploring ways
to use new technology to deliver classes. We are also making recommendations for
improvements to the equipment at various sites to make the technology work at its best.
I contribute to curriculum and educational programs at the School of Social Work as a
member of the Curriculum Committee, serving as Chair of the Integrated Practice
Concentration, and Coordinator of the End-of-Life Care Field of Practice.
In summer 2007 I redesigned the School of Social Work’s Mexico Travel Seminar to
incorporate both immersion and service learning components. I directed and taught this
14 day travel seminar in August 2007 for 10 students (9 undergraduates and one graduate
student) in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, México. I taught the Travel Seminar again in summer
2008 for 15 students, 11 MSW students, one doctoral student, and 3 undergraduate
students majoring in social work. Both groups of students presented on their experiences
at the Iowa Latino Conference during the fall after their travel seminar, in 2007 in
Marshalltown and in 2008 in Des Moines.
During Spring Break 2007 I participated in the new immersion and service learning class
in Xicotepec, Mexico, a collaborative project between the Rotary Clubs of Iowa City and
Xicotepec and the Center on Teaching at the University of Iowa. I assisted students
connect with community leaders and projects and established contacts for projects for
social work students to carry out in the future if they participate in the course.
I have served on the Immersion Learning Sub-Committee of the Diversity Committee of
the School of Social Work from spring semester 2003 to the present. This sub-committee
Murty, 18
is developing experiential and service learning curriculum for the educational programs at
the School of Social Work.
I developed a new interdisciplinary course on domestic violence, open to undergraduate
and graduate students from departments across the university campus, cosponsored by the
School of Social Work and the Injury Prevention Research Center of the University of
Iowa. This course has been offered three times; most recently I taught it spring semester
2007 to 23 students from a range of departments as well as social work. I am now
supervising the doctoral student who was my teaching practicum student in 2007 and who
is now teaching the course.
In January 2006 I participated in the Travel Seminar to El Salvador along with Professor
Amy Butler of Social Work and Pastor Marsha Accord of the Wesley Center and Campus
Ministry. This immersion trip for social work students included learning about the impact
of the war in El Salvador and a visit to a Pastoral Ministry Team providing social and
economic development services to communities in the area around Berlin, El Salvador.
Beginning in January 2002 I have been active in developing the new End-of-Life Care
Field of Practice, an educational program on end-of-life care initially funded by the
Project on Death in America (Open Society Institute, Soros Foundation). Students
continue to participate in this program both in Iowa City and in Des Moines. New
students have applied to enter the program in in Iowa City, Quad Cities and in Des
Moines. This project is described further under External Grants for Teaching Innovations.
I have developed two new courses of the field of practice, the Introductory Seminar in
End-of-Life Care in Rural Communities and Integrative Seminar in End-of-Life Care and
I have taught these classes both for Iowa City and Des Moines students. In February 2006
I was co-presenter of a Curriculum Workshop on end-of-life care curriculum at the
Council on Social Work Education Annual Program Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. I am
Exploring the possibility of providing the End-of-Life Care Curriculum to the next cohort
of Sioux City M.S.W. students who entered the program in summer 2008. In summer
2008 I taught the Introductory Seminar in End-of-Life Care on the Internet version using
Adobe Connect with students in Iowa City, Des Moines, and Quad Cities all participating
on-line in the same class simultaneously.
Beginning in January 2002 I collaborated actively with Professor Lorraine Dorfman on
the Hartford Foundation and Council on Social Work Education funded program to add
content on gerontology to undergraduate and graduate social work curricula. My role is
Curriculum Consultant on the project. We are working with a group of nine social work
faculty and an advisory board made up of practitioners, community representatives, and
students. This project is currently in its third and final year with an emphasis on
evaluation and dissemination. This project is described further under External Grants for
Teaching Innovations. Professor Dorfman and I are continuing to follow up on this
project to ensure that the curriculum innovations are sustained.
I continue to improve course web site for 42:260 and 42:261 (Integrated Social Work
Theory and Practice I and II) and add resources and bring in guest speakers. In fall 2008, I
used Adobe Connect to teach a section of 042:260 including students from Des Moines
and Iowa City in the same cyber classroom.
Murty, 19
I collaborated with three Ph.D. students to make a panel presentation at the Council on
Social Work Education annual program meeting in February 2002 and 2003. Each
student developed and presented a topic on the panel.
I helped arrange for five students to participate in the Annual Institute on Social Work
and Human Services in Rural Areas held at Austin, Texas May 30-June 2, 2001. These
students had the opportunity to learn about educational and research programs on rural
topics being carried out nationally. I supervised a presentation by four of these students
at the Institute titled "Student Panel Reports on Learning Experientially About the Assets
of a Diverse Rural Community."
Student presenters represented the School of Social Work’s BA, MSW, and Ph.D.
Programs. This opportunity to make a presentation at a national conference was an
excellent learning experience for these students.
During the fall of 2001, I worked with Dr. Pam Noel, post doctoral student at the School
of Social Work, and with the campus ministers at Lutheran Campus Ministry and the
Wesley Foundation to organize a Spring Break service trip for students at the University
of Iowa. The students traveled to San Bernardino, California in March, 2002 for a service
learning experience at an inner city mission program. This cross cultural program was an
opportunity for the students to learn about life in inner city America and to learn from
African American and Latino youth who are peer educators at the Mission. In addition, it
was an opportunity to communicate with students from several departments across
campus. Professor Thomas Lewis of the UI Department of Spanish and Portuguese
provided the students with a lecture on Liberation Theology in preparation for the trip. I
participated in a return visit by peer leaders from the mission who came to the University
of Iowa campus in spring 2003.
