India and Uzbekistan on Oct 1, 2018 inked 17 pactsto boost ties in key areas including defence.It was signed after extensive talks between PrimeMinister Narendra Modi and Uzbek PresidentShavkat Mirziyoyev.17 pacts were signed in areas of defence,agriculture, science and technology and space,besides combating drug-trafficking.India also decided to provide a line of credit of USD200 million for low-cost homes and other suchinfrastructure projects in the social sectors of thecentral Asian country.The two sides agreed to scale the bilateral tradefrom present USD 300 million to USD 1 billion by2020.Both the sides agreed to constitute an expertgroup on India-Uzbekistan Preferential TradeAgreement by the end of 2018.

Why in NewsThe 10th Agricultural Census data (2015-2016) was released on Oct 1,2018 by Ministry of Agriculture.Key Highlights

• More and more females are participating in the management andoperation of agricultural lands.

• However, it showed a 1.53 per cent decline in total operated area at 157.14million hectare as compared to 2010-11 data.

• The percentage share of female operational holders has increased from12.79 per cent in 2010-11 to 13.87 per cent in 2015-16.

• In terms of operated area, the share of women increased from 10.36 percent to 11.57 per cent.

• The average size of operational holding declined to 1.08 hectares (ha) in2015-16 compared to 1.15 ha in 2010-11.

The first census was conducted with reference year 1970-71.The census is conducted every five years to collect data on structuralaspects of operational holdings in the country.
