  • INDIA Officially addressed as the Republic of India, the name India was derived from the Indus River civilization around 3000 B.C. in modern day Pakistan. At the time, what is now Pakistan was part of the Indian territory. India kept its name, despite the shift in location. The country of India currently holds a little over 1/8 of the human population, being the second most populus country in the world. Among these people, the government recognizes 14 official languages, and declares Hindu to be the most popular religion. In fact, Hindu religion is practiced by 80% of the population. When India was finally free of British rule in 1947, it split into the Republic of India and the Republic of Pakistan. Later the Republic of Bangledesh was added in between the two. It took almost a hundred years for India to become an independent nation, and was greatly celebrated when India succeeded.

    Rest In Peace

When I was researching India, I became really interested in the story behind the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is one of the most well known pieces of architecture in India. It was made in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, who was married to a great ruler of the Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan. After doing extensive research over the history of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahans relationship, I was inspired to create my bill designs based on the love story behind the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan and Mumtaz seemed to have the perfect relationship. First, they met and had an instant physical attraction to eachother, which is typical of most new relationships. After marriage, though, a deeper connection took root. Mumtaz became involved in his every day life as a wife and a friend: physically and emotionally. She helped him rule the empire, and he loved her until the day she died. To me, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of the strong relationship that they had together. In my design, I illustrated their love story, focusing on Mumtaz role in the relationship. I told the story in order from smaller bill to larger bill, while on the other side of the bill, I displayed the Taj Mahal. The colors and patterns I used were based on traditional wedding designs and Mehndi tattoo designs. By using color, pattern and type, I wanted to convey a mood of romance, extravagance, and exoticness.

In the series, I started with the 10 Rupees bill design, which I used to illustrate the meeting of Shah Jahan and Arjumand Banu. Shah Jahan was said to have fallen in love at first sight of Arjumand, who was a niece of another empress. I chose to symbolize the inseparable bond that took place between the two lovers. By combining portraits into equal halves, the illustration suggests oneness and equality in their relationship.

In the 20 Rupee bill design, I wanted to show the affectionate nature of Shah Jahan and Arjumand Banus relationship when they were married. Because they had been engaged to be married for 5 years, the couple was able to build a strong connection emotionally and physically before becoming newlyweds. When they finally did marry, Arjumand was named Mumtaz Mahalwhich means the chosen one of the palace.

    Fifty Rupees

In the 50 Rupee bill design, I chose to illustrate the general concept of child-bearing and pregnancy in the life of Arjumand (Mumtaz). In their marriage, Mumtaz gave birth 14 children in total, 7 of them dying before the age of 5. The people that knew the couple almost always saw Mumtaz pregnant during Shah Jahans reign. This was Mumtazs gift to Shah Jahan, fulfilling her cultural duty as a wife and mother.

    Traveling Together

One hundredrupeesIn the 100 Rupee bill design, I wanted to illustrate the extent of their relationship. Mumtaz and Shah Jahan travelled together, even when she was pregnant. She was fair and kind, as an empress, making her not only loved by Shah Jahan, but also by the people she led. She had a strong influence on decisions that happened in the kingdom by staying involved in Shah Jahans life. He was her lover and respected companion. Because they were so close and had this kind of relationship, Mumtaz was able to travel the Mughal empire (India) by elephant with her husband.

    Rest In Peace

Five hundredrupeesIn the last bill design worth 500 Rupees, I wanted to signify the death of Mumtaz Mahal. Unfortunately, Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to her 14th child while travelling with Shah Jahan. Her body was put in a temporary place nearby for the time being, but eventually ended up at what is now known as the Taj Mahal. This illustration is depicting the golden casket inside the Taj Mahal in modern day Agra, India.
