THE TRENCH
Message From The President
I would like to wish all members of CUPE local 1599 a happy and healthy New Years. Thank you to all the members of our local who helped in 2010 and are now stepping forward to help in 2011.
The year 2011 will bring many changes and many challenges. CUPE 1599 will face these challenges together, defending our members and up holding our collecFve agreement. As management, members and our community change, so do the ways we run our local.
The CUPE resource binders, located in every department, include the collecFve agreement, seniority list, heavy workload forms and contact informaFon for phoning or e-‐mailing the local. It is a valuable resource that every member should use to inform themselves.
This is the year of the Steward across Canada. Courses for Stewarding have changed, offering more informaFon for Stewards when represenFng members at the local level. All execuFve members will take the new Stewarding courses.
May 2011 be a year that brings us together for fun and friendship as well as work and representaFon.
All the best,
Jack Sellers
President

OUR NEW FLOOR REPS
In July 2010, CUPE Local 1599, formed the Heavy workload Commi\ee. We hold meeFngs to review, monitor, and discuss the Heavy Workload forms that have been completed by the members and forwarded to us. It is very important that when you fill out a HWL form that you give it to a member on the commi\ee or an member of the execuFve. The informaFon gathered with the forms is used in many different ways.
We will also keep memebers informed of The Health and Safety Acts and how these acts apply to Local 1599’s members. If you wish to join our commi\e please let anyone of our members know.

From the Editors
We hope you enjoyed the first issue of the “The Trench”. Our plan with this issue was to show the members all the different ways your local is working for you and maybe even enFce you to help out on a commi\ee. Always remember, that by keeping yourself up to date with what is happening in your local, YOU make CUPE 1599 be\er and stronger.
We welcome all feedback on the newsle\er, so feel free to get in contact with us through any of the union channels (web page, facebook, union phone or inter-‐hospital mail). We will gladly print le\ers to the editor as long as they are less than 250 words and that they do not go against CUPE or Grace Hospital policies. You must include your name and phone number with your submission. Please note that your name will be printed with your le\er unless expressly stated otherwise.

The Social Committee has been formed and an impromptu meeting was held to establish some goals for the short term. The in-term chair is Bill Moore with it's members as Manuel Barnabas, Shelley Moore, Amado Bae, Michele Sherry, Tammi Delyeaand Lorena Novel. Bill, Shelley and Manuel were at the initial meeting. What we wanted to accomplish in that first meeting was to develop a mission statement or purpose of having a social committee and hence social activities for Cupe members. Four ideas came to the forefront: Create more fun for members and a friendlier work environment, create a sense of unity, and give added value to our union dues. As the committee evolves more ideas will surely come forth. We look forward to working with anyone that has the energy to get involved.
