CUMNOCK PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

Congratulations to all the students who overcame nervous moments to deliver their fine and

persuasive speeches to our school and community audience. Thank you to parents who helped

their children practise throughout the holidays in preparation for the event. Mrs Gibson and Mrs

O’Brien were very impressed with the improvement the children have made since last year’s

speeches. Good luck and congratulations to the following students who will be representing our

school at the CWA Western Group’s Competition at All Saints College in Bathurst on Tuesday 22nd

May:

Year 3: Macey Armstrong

Year 4: Gracie Morse

Year 5: Jonathan Pottie

Year 6: Hannah Gibson

OUTSTANDING RESULTS AT DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY AT MOLONG

It was a great privilege to represent our OSSA GOLD group at this Competition in blustery and

cold conditions at Molong. Thank you to the students from all our schools who displayed

outstanding sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the event. We were proud of our representatives:

Hannah Gibson, Molly Duffy, Charlie Duffy, Thomas Vickers, Zali Armstrong, Macey Armstrong,

Charlie O’Brien, Rose Baldwin and Elizabeth Baldwin and are thrilled for Zali who will proceed to

the next level of the competition at the Western Schools Cross Country Trials at Guerie in June.

ORANGE DISTRICT PSSA ATHLETICS CARNIVAL AT WARATAHS

Well done to all our students who displayed fine sportsmanship at the OSSA Athletics Carnival.

The following students have been selected to attend the Orange PSSA Carnival this Friday.

Congratulations to Austin Bruce, Ryan Whiting, Charlie and Molly Duffy, Zali and Macey

Armstrong, and Kiera and Emily Strahan. Mrs Schulz will be there to cheer along all our OSSA

representatives but especially our students! Congratulations to our OSSA PP5 relay consisting of

Marc Tero, Emily Strahan, Charlie Duffy and Charlie O’Brien who came third and qualify for the

Western Athletics Carnival in Dubbo in September!

CUMNOCK PUBLIC MASTERPLAN UPDATE

At our recent P & C meeting last Tuesday we welcomed our new Executive and discussed a

number of important issues and fundraising possibilities along with the School Landscape

Masterplan. Mrs Celia Baxter is in the process of finalising tenders with the school in order to

commence operations on the new footpath and entrance. Once again a huge vote of thanks

to the P and C for their ongoing fundraising efforts this year amidst the drought and unrelenting

feeding regime that many families are now experiencing each day.

LEARNING GOALS FOR STUDENTS

Students in class 4/5/6 will be working on developing learning goals in literacy and numeracy to

support ownership of their learning and achievements. This is an initiative across our COS network

to ensure our students have developed the skills and understanding to set achievable goals and

outcomes in class.

MOTHER’S DAY

We are hoping that all our special Mums, Grandmothers and Grandfriends were suitably spoilt for

Mother’s Day. Once again, thank you to our Office staff who organised and promoted the

wonderful gift collection for your children and to Mrs Allcorn for her awesome packaging ideas.

LEARNING PROGRESSIONS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Throughout the year, all staff have opportunities to attend Professional Learning opportunities. In

Week 4, Miss Rivers, Mr West and myself will be attending Charles Sturt University to develop our

understanding of the new National Literacy and Numeracy Progressions. These Progressions

describe common pathways or developmental sequences for the acquisition of aspects of

literacy and numeracy development. All staff will be upskilled in the use of these new

Progressions throughout the year.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Thank you to Kane Radford who visited our school to kick start our JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

program. We will be organising skipping sessions each week to maintain and develop greater

skipping competence across the whole school. Thank you to Kane for being part of this initiative

and we look forward to our JUMP OFF later in the term!

NAPLAN

This week the students in Years 3 and 5 will be involved in the NAPLAN testing. The tests provide

parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing on a given

day. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they do

not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. Thank you to

all teachers who have been supporting Year 3 and 5 students prepare for these tests.

MR CHARLES DWYER MITCHELL EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP DIRECTOR

On Thursday we will welcome our new Mitchell Educational Leadership Director, Mr Charles

Dwyer to our school, to meet staff, students and colleagues from our Community of Schools

network. Cumnock has fallen under the Mitchell umbrella of operation but we will still be

working closely with our colleagues within the Orange network and our Community of School

group.

WELCOME ASSEMBLY IN WEEK 3

Friday 25th will be our first Assembly for Term 2 which will be overseen by Mr West, Mrs Hubbard

and Miss Rivers. Class items will be presented by K/1 on Friday 8th June, 4/5/6 on Friday 22nd June

and by 2/3 on Friday 6th July. Please note these dates in your calendars.

PRE 2

Pre 2 is a collaborative approach to enhancing learning across member schools which

embraces 21st century technologies, offering enriched curriculum practice, learning excursions

and pedagogy within our primary classrooms. This allows our staff to connect with colleagues

across the Orange network and surrounding region to engage in Professional Learning

opportunities after school on a wide range of subjects each term.

DRAFT VISITORS CODE OF CONDUCT

At various times of the year we update policies within our school as required by the Department.

At our recent P & C meeting I tabled the draft Cumnock Public School Visitors Code of Conduct

for comment and feedback. This policy aims to provide a guide for all parents and members of

the school community in order to ensure a safe, respectful and harmonious school environment.

I am enclosing the draft Cumnock Public School Visitors Code of Conduct for feedback from the

wider school community. Thankyou for your support.

WELLINGTON EISTEDDFOD JULY 28TH—18TH AUGUST

It’s that time of year again… entries for Wellington Eisteddfod need to be submitted by May 25th.

If your child is interested in entering any poetry sections, (humorous, Australian, poems for 2) I will

be asking for expressions of interest next week. The school can submit the individual entries in

poems but entry fees and transport to the eisteddfod will be the responsibility of parents.

The school will be entering the primary class (Years 3-6) in the group verse speaking to be held on

Wednesday 2nd August.

OSSA GOLD TOUCH TRIAL

Thank you to the parents who transported their children to the OSSA

GOLD Touch Football trials in Orange last Monday. Unfortunately, no

students were selected from Cumnock but I appreciate the efforts of

parents and students to participate in these trials. This term in 4/5/6,

we are developing skills in touch football which will be important for

the selection process next year.

STAFF PROFILES

This week we profile our multi-talented teacher and musical maestro, Mrs Helen Hubbard.

With kind regards,

Amanda Schulz

Hello Everyone… I have been politely asked to do a staff profile!

Background

Married to husband Ross (Family originally form Euchareena)

4 children (now adults!)… 2 are in the health profession, one in education and one an engineer.

My family came from Young… farming

Interests… other than family and teaching I love gardening and sport.

Teaching

My teaching career has encompassed teaching Year 12 (History/English) to Kindergarten!

After I graduated from Macquarie Uni my first posting was at Condobolin Pubic School which I loved. After Marrying,

Ross and I moved to Ingham North Qld as Ross worked for CSR. After we returned to NSW I taught History and English

at St Joseph’s Albury. Four children then kept me busy for a number of years. When I resumed teaching I taught for a

number of years at a little school (similar to Cumnock) called Bellata in north west NSW. When Ross and I relocated to

Orange I was so ‘lucky’ to be asked to do some causal teaching at a wonderful little school called ‘Cumnock’…. and I’m still

here!!!!

I find working in small schools very fulfilling on so many levels. As a teacher you get the opportunity to see the children

grow and develop from infants through to their primary years. You get to know all the students! You also meet a wide

cross section of students and members of the community. I attended a little 2 teacher school between Young and Cowra

and just loved my time there. Teaching in small school’s is special and personal. Thank you Cumnock!
