North Graham Elementary Hears From Sandy Hook Elementary PTA
Staff members at North Graham Elementary received a kind letter of gratitude from the PTA at Sandy Hook Elementary. After the
tragedy last year, Katy Lupton, the art teacher at NGE, sprung into action. In order to support the
“Snowflakes for Sandy Hook Campaign,” Katy and the staff at NGE immediately started working after
school to prepare snowflakes. Their creations were sent to the PTA and used to decorate the
student’s school upon their return in the winter. Here is what the letter said,
Thank you for your heartfelt, generous, and thoughtful
contribution to Snowflakes for Sandy Hook. Because of your
efforts and many others, we received snowflakes of all shapes,
sizes and forms from schools, PTAs, community centers, and families
across the country and around the world. Sandy Hook students, staff
and families have been the recipient of a blizzard of love and support
in the form of snowflakes, and we could not be more thankful!
Our community has taken great comfort in the global outpouring
Of support from wonderful people like you.

Millions of Dads at Grove Park
Amber Doby, school social worker at GPE, shared the following: “Grove Park Elementary participated in the Million Father March
2013 by inviting fathers into the school with Connect Ed messages and inviting them to sign pledges during our Meet the Teacher
night which included agreeing to bring their child to school on the first day and volunteering at the school three times this school
year. Over 50 men signed pledges and even more men brought their child/children to school on the first day.
The Million Father March is part of the Black Star Project and has grown out of recognition of the power of male involvement in the
education of all students. A father who actively participates in the educational and social developmental life of a child is invaluable
and irreplaceable. A 2004 summary study by The Parent Institute showed that at schools where teachers reported high levels of
outreach to parents, reading test scores rose 50 percent higher, and math test scores 40 percent higher, than in schools where
teachers reported low levels of outreach.

Statistics from the National Fatherhood Initiative support these
findings and show that when fathers and men are regularly and
substantially involved in the education and social development of
children, those children have higher standardized test scores,
higher grade point averages, higher attendance rates and higher
high-school graduation rates. Additionally, those children have
lower rates of suspension, expulsion, and arrest, as well as fewer
incidents of violent behavior, and they are less likely to use drugs
and alcohol.”

Western NJROTC Water Warriors
Master Chief USN (Retired) Rod Butler shared: “Western Alamance High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC)
Cadet’s Grant Orton, Tyler LaPlaca, and Robert Hough completed the Navy JROTC’s Sailing Academy Course at Moncks Corner, South
Carolina 9-14 June 2013 and managed by NJROTC Area 6 featuring 102 cadets of the 6000 NJROTC cadets from over 65 units in
North and South Carolina. The goal of the course is to stress the whole concept of quite professionalism and teamwork. Teamwork
comes in handy when the cadets set sail and then tipped over, upright the boat, and clear out excessive amounts of water in the
bottom of the craft. Teamwork is also a big part of sailing during turning movements as the boat tack and jibe. This is where the
cadets learn that quite
professionalism is so
important. Everyone needs to
know their job and only listen
to the instructions from the
leader of the boat. The Sailing
Academy gives cadets a better
perspective on leadership
qualities in hopes that they
can go back to their school
and build a stronger and
cohesive NJROTC Unit.”
