Join us for a breath-taking weekend amidst the stunning scenery of the Lake District for an exhilarating challenge in a fun environment, combining a competitive race with a party atmosphere on the Saturday evening with drinks, food and an informal awards ceremony.

The Cumbrian Challenge is Walking With The Wounded’s annual, flagship, fundraising event in the Lake District.

2015 will be the third consecutive year of the event - and the biggest yet with up to 800 participants from 200 teams.

The event aims to raise £400,000 to support 200 more wounded veterans back into work – one for each team taking part in the event.

Teams of four have the choice of two spectacular and challenging routes - Tough or Tougher - with each team fundraising in advance, engaging their friends, families and colleagues.

Competitors get to meet and race against some of the extraordinary service men and women we have been able to support as well as our expedition team members.

The Cumbrian Challenge

The Cumbrian Challenge weekend includes branding, participation and engagement opportunities across the following:

Friday evening - Registration & Briefing

Participants meet up with old friends, team mates and make new acquaintances at race registration. Teams benefit from an official event welcome, pre-race briefing and wholesome evening meal.

They are supplied with registration packs including event-branded maps and technical t-shirts to wear. There is also a fully-stocked bar and the opportunity to shop with our event partners.

Saturday - Race Day

Competitors race alongside beneficiaries and expedition members on one of two courses:

1. Tough (20km with 1,300m of ascent); or

2. Tougher (29km with 1,800m of ascent),

These will take 5-11 hours depending on fitness.

Saturday - Race Day Ctd

Competitors are all treated to an energizing breakfast on site before an early start on a well-marshalled route staffed by local mountain leaders with water stops, escape routes and cut-off times to ensure event safety is paramount.

At the finish line competitors are cheered home by WWTW staff and beneficiaries and offered hot drinks, food and medals.

Saturday evening - Party

Post-race there is a laid-back prize-giving ceremony and words from WWTW Co-Founder and CEO Ed Parker before hot food, a live band and an evening party alongside charity beneficiaries, staff and wounded expedition team members.

It is a really successful, informal opportunity for participants and event partners to meet everyone in an adventurous environment.

Finding long-term employment is one of the biggest challenges facing wounded servicemen and women hoping to lead a normal life after severe injury.

Walking With The Wounded’s aim is to support all veterans with physical, mental or social injuries to gain the skills and qualifications required to develop new careers outside the military, re-integrate into society and provide long-term security for themselves and their families. As well as our fundraising events we stage extreme expeditions, entirely funded by corporate sponsorship, to highlight the extraordinary determination and courage of these inspirational people and in September 2015 will be staging our first domestic expedition – the “Walk Across Britain” with the Cumbrian Challenge being used as training for some of the expedition members. We would like to invite you to consider starting on a journey with us by supporting the Cumbrian Challenge in 2015.

What we do

Page 10: Cumbrian Challenge - Why your team should sign up in 2015

With your help we aim to raise enough funds through the 2015 Cumbrian Challenge to support a further 200 wounded veterans back into employment through our First Steps programme.

First Steps is WWTW’s primary programme which finances qualifications and vocational training for our wounded veterans who have been disadvantaged by their service.

WWTW recognises the inherent skills of our armed service and wants to compliment these qualities with recognised qualifications that employers across the country need. This is a first step into new careers outside of the military.

“What a fantastic event, I was so impressed with the organisation. It was very reassuring that there were so many checkpoints along the route and we really appreciated the friendliness we were shown and the encouragement given by all of the WWTW team along the way. We loved being cheered over the finish line by the event organisers. This personal touch was very nice and is something that you don’t normally see at these sort of events.” Lucy Bodenham, Burgess Yachts “Thanks for organising such a great event, it was really excellent…. I hope to be back next year”.
