The criteria that individuals use to judgeeffective leadership varies across cultures.Participative leadership is viewedpositively in the West, whereas in othersparts of the world the most effectiveleaders are paternalistic. In somesocieties, leadership is assertive anddominant, whereas in other societies,leadership is compassionate and caring.Some cultures view power and privilegesnegatively, whereas status differentials arerevered in other cultures. Effective globalleadership is not a static set of qualitiesand behaviours, but it involves flexibilityacross cultural settings to meet the variedexpectations of followers.

CULTURALLY INTELLIGENTLEADERSHIPCultural Intelligence, or CQ, is a globally recognised way of assessing andimproving effectiveness for culturally diverse settings. It is rooted in rigorous,academic research conducted by scholars around the world. Cultural intelligence isrelevant at all levels of an organisation, but it is especially relevant at the leadershiplevel. Domestic leaders may not be successful internationally unless they possesshigh cultural intelligence.
