LVMH-backed fund huntsfor emerging Asian brands

NEW YORK, 8 May—A $650-million privateequity fund backed by the world’s top luxuryretailer LVMH is on the prowl for emerging Asianbrands in the hope of transforming them into globalnames.

The L Capital Asia fund has so far spent a totalof $90 million on minority stakes in twoSingaporean fashion companies and a Hong Kong-listed watch and jewellery company.

It is in advanced talks with a fashion-relatedfirm from China and another from India and hopesto make an announcement about the investments inthe next few months, said Ravi Thakran, the fund’smanaging partner.

Unlike its parent group LVMH, whichconcentrates on the top tier of the luxury sector, hesaid the fund focuses exclusively on promisingAsian labels looking for a big breakthrough, particularly in the Chinese and Indian markets.

“The primary engine not only for Asia-Pacific,but for the whole world today, is this twin propellerof China and India,” Thakran said.

“So we are looking for those smart entrepreneurswho have a great product, very differentiated DNA,something very different in their category.”

He said the fund will look at China, India andSoutheast Asia, where promising labels wouldbenefit from an extra push from a partner such asLVMH.

Australia’s 2011-12 budgetto create more jobs

CANBERRA, 8 May—Australian Treasurer WayneSwan on Sunday said the 2011-12 federal budget, tobe released next week, will get more Australians intojobs and spreading the opportunity of the miningboom.

Swan is due to release the budget on Tuesday, and some economists are predicting that it will includea deficit of about 56 billion US. dollars, comparedwith the 45.6 billion US dollars predicted at the timeof the mid-year budget review last November.

Swan said the federal budget is too often treatedlike a magic act, judged on the number of surprises, clever one-liners and rabbit-out-of-the-hat-style tricks.

Instead, he said next Tuesday’s budget is not aone-night show, and it will show a return to surplus in2012-13, getting more Australians into jobs andspreading the opportunity of the mining boom.

“It will get us back into the black in 2012-13,that’s the responsible course of action, well ahead ofjust about any other developed economy in theworld,” Swan said in his final Sunday economic notebefore handing down his fourth budget.

Swan has said the budget would be at least a 7.1billion US dollars hit to revenues in the short termcaused by this summer’s natural disasters, both athome and in Japan, as well as the hangover of theglobal financial crisis. However, he said longer termthere would be economic strength and strong jobcreation. Swan said small business is to the forefrontof the government’ s focus, because not everybody isgoing to be in the fast lane of the economy.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Monday, 9 May, 2011 7

The Myanmar Writers and JournalistsAssociation in cooperation with the Informationand Public Relations Department carried out thepost-literary programme and tasks for sustainabledevelopment of the school libraries in DagonMyothit (North) and Thakayta townships fromDecember 2010 to January 2011.

The programme covered essay contests, extempore talks contests and poem-recitingcontests at the high, middle and primary schoollevels. The topics for the contests were “TheBook I have Read”, “Our School Library”, and“Knowledge is Power”.

The awarding ceremony for the contestswere held on a grand scale, attended by the thenMinister for Information U Kyaw Hsan.

The Myanmar Writers and JournalistsAssociation and well-wishers donated periodicalsto the school libraries.

The Information and Public RelationsDepartment has been opening libraries in bothurban and rural areas as part of the post-literary programme. So far, it has establishedover 50,000 libraries in rural areas alone.

A growing number of libraries acrossthe nation help broaden the horizons of thepublic and enable them to distinguish betweengood and bad and make remarkablecontribution towards the shaping of the futureof the nation.

I would like to present aphorisms of somedoyen literati.

Mind controls body. Wisdom controls mind.Knowledge controls wisdom. So read as manypublications of various genres as you can toacquire knowledge.

(P. Moe Nin)Reading is ‘keeping doors open’. Reading

no books is ‘keeping doors closed’.(U Bagyi Ngo)

Keep off reading and your future willremain dim.

(Dagon U San Ngwe)Reading makes you get relaxed and

refreshed, expands your horizons, keepsdepressing away, suppresses conceit, guides you

Step up post-literary programmeMin Than Hlaing

to enlightenment, and enriches your life in mundaneand supramundane affairs.

(Mann Tin)Book is the best friend. If you want to read

books, then go to a library where a wide range ofbooks are kept. A library is the best university.

(U Thaw Kaung)In my opinion, once a village gets a library,

it provides a starting point for vast knowledge ofthe villagers. It is because knowledge can changefrom bad to good.

Actually, book is the best mass medium forknowledge, entertainment and information. A placewhere books can be stored systematically for along time is a library.

Today competition for prosperity is intense. If one does not read books to acquire knowledge, one will not know as much as it should be andsurely one will lags behind others in prosperity.

A doyen writer once said that readingenriched knowledge and got rid of wrong concepts.By reading, a person can not only broaden hishorizons but also removes imprudent ideas.Suppose a person has applied a method for a longtime, and it is deep in his heart. And reading books,he gains a better method, then it is safe to say thathe has improved his knowledge.

Book is a source of knowledge. So, onecannot improve one’s reasoning power if onekeeps off reading. If so, one’s intellectual powerremains normal. To read books is to gainknowledge, not to know how to read. Sayingssuch as “Book is the best friend”, and“Knowledge is power” reflect the benefits ofliteracy.

With our experiences only, we cannot knoweverything. Only when we read books in whichwriters present their experiences and lessons willit be possible for us to gain knowledge.

If we are going to read a book, we shouldknow the life of the writer to some extent and weshould judge whether we can gain knowledgefrom the book or not. If a book “How to be rich”is written by a poor man, it is out of the questionfor readers to become rich by applying the pointsfeatured in the book.

If an illiterate becomes rich, his richnesswill not last long. The progress of a lifelonglearner will come to an end only when he is dead.

Now, the people have easy access to librarieswhere they can make choices of books they like. The people can visit libraries and take time toread.

It is heartening to note that the MyanmarLibraries Foundation has been established. So,the number of libraries will keep growing. Well-wishers are donating cash and publications withgood volition. The most encouraging news forbook lovers is that the Myanmar Writers andJournalists Association has launched a test run ofmedia corners in Yangon.

A marked increase in the number oflibraries and media corners gives furtherimpetus for dealing with the challenge of theAge of Knowledge. In conclusion, I am verypleased the people can now expand theirhorizons due to the literary institutions thatcan provide intellectual nourishment.

Japan won’t abandon nukesdespite crisis

TOKYO, 8 May— A top Japanese official saidSunday that Japan would maintain atomic power asa major part of its energy policy despite the country’songoing nuclear crisis.

Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary YoshitoSengoku also said the government has no plans tohalt nuclear reactors other than three at the Hamaokapower plant in central Japan. The plant was askedlast week to halt the units until a seawall is built andbackup systems are improved.

“Our energy policy is to stick to nuclear power,”Sengoku said on a weekly talk show on publicbroadcaster NHK.

He said Hamaoka was an exception and that thegovernment’s closure request Friday did not meana departure from its nuclear-reliant policy.

Chubu Electric Power Co, which runs the threeHamaoka reactors, postponed its decision Saturdayon the government’s shutdown request.

The main concern is that shutting down thereactors would likely worsen power shortagesexpected this summer.

The government has been reviewing the safetyof the country’s 54 atomic reactors since a 11March earthquake and tsunami crippled theFukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in the north. Thedisaster left more than 25,000 people dead ormissing on the northeast coast and triggered theworst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986.

SHIJIAZHUANG, 8 May—Experts in north China'sHebei Province said theyhad invented a special

kind of liquid that canrestore heavily-corrodedbronzeware dating backover 2,000 years.

The liquid could elimi-nate bronze rust onbronzeware surfaces andconvert it into a firm coat-ing to prevent further cor-rosion, said researcherswith the Hebei ProvincialRelics Protection Center.Traditional rust-removalmethods often corrodethe bronzeware andchange its color. The newliquid, a kind of organicsalt, is bronze-friendly.

As most of thebronzeware unearthedare heavily corroded, re-

searchers believe the newinvention is significant inthe archaeological fieldto restore the original lookof ancient bronzeware. The centre has experi-mented by using the liq-uid on scraps ofbronzeware such as grainreceptacles, hooks, andcooking vessels, whichwere believed to be fromthe Warring Sates Period(475-221 B.C.), and therestored effect was satis-factory, they said.
