1. ROMANIA – General informations
• Born in the 1st millennium AD, the Romanian
people has continuously inhabited the
selfsame geographical space to this days.
• Romania is situated in Central Europe, in the
northern part of the Balkan peninsula, and its
territory is marked by Carpathian Mountains,
the Danube and the Black Sea.

2. GALAŢI CITY
• Galaţi is a city and a municipality in Romania. The town ofGalaţi is the capital of Galaţi County. It rises on the leftbank of the Danube, at the intersection of important routesconnecting the North and South of Europe, the East and theWest.
• Galaţi lies in the historical region of Moldavia, near toBrăila.
• Galaţi is the largest port and the largest sea port on theDanube River. It is the second largest port in Romania.
• In 2015, census data recorded 231,204 inhabitants in the cityof Galaţi. At that time it was the seventh most populous cityin Romania.
• Galaţi is an industrial city based around the NavalShipyard, the Arcelor-Mittal steel plant and the Port.

• The cultural and social life of the local community, includingRomanians, Russians, Germans, Greeks and Italians,develops along the Danube.

Galati History is related to an important figure in the Romanian history, the great ruler
Alexandru Ioan Cuza, whose reign over both Moldavia and the Romanian County led to the
unifications of these two lands and to the creation of the later country Romania.
From this moment on the city went through different periods of evolution and then decade, but
the most atrocious period was represented by World War II when the entire historic center of the town
was destroyed.

The town's industry consists mainly of iron-and steel processing and shipbuilding. Galati
occupies the first place in the national iron smelting production and is the biggest Romanian center
for metal processing industry.
With over 100 years of history, the shipyard of Galati is the oldest in Romania. Other
industrial branches (food-and beverage industry, textiles) are also very well represented in the city
and county of Galati.

“Dunarea de Jos” University
of Galati is an accredited higher
education state institution,
functioning based on regulations
stipulated and approved by the
Senate or by managerial organisms of
structural components, in agreement
with: the Declaration of the Rights of
Man, the Constitution of Romania,
the Law of Education, the Law of the
Status of Teachers and the provisions
of the University Charter.1948: foundation of the Institute for Land Improvement;
1951: foundation of the Institute of Mechanics and Naval Constructions
1953: fusion of the Institute of Mechanics and Naval Constructions with the Agronomical Institute and the Institute of
Fishing and Pisciculture (transferred from other academic centres) and creation of the Technical Institute of Galati;
1955: fusion of the Technical Institute with Institute for Food Industries in Bucharest;
1957: transformation of the Technical Institute in the Polytechnic Institute;
1959: foundation of the Pedagogical Institute and transfer of the Institute for Land Improvement to Iasi;
1974: creation of the University of Galati through fusion of the Polytechnic Institute with the Pedagogical Institute;

The Faculty of Naval Architecture
The Faculty of Naval Architecture is considered to
be:
the oldest naval architecture institution in
Romania pertaining to the domain of naval
engineering;
the higher education entity where notorious
personalities in the field of naval engineering have
been trained;
the only faculty in Romania which has developed
a steady experimental research (naval
hydrodynamics, structures and naval equipment);
the faculty which has initiated and developed the
first doctoral studies in naval engineering in
Romania;
a faculty that owns the proper infrastructure for
research (pool or model tank in order to study the
hydrodynamic performance of a ship, cavitation
tunnel for experimentally studying the propellers
of a ship – this equipment was unique in the
country for almost four decades and at present it is
the only one existing within a higher education
institution – , highly equipped laboratories);
a faculty with a rich international cooperation
under the form of teacher / student exchanges,

Living in Campus
The accommodation, canteen and leisure facilities of the „Dunărea de Jos”
University consist of 13 hostels, restaurant/canteen, a chapel, 2 gyms and an
infirmary, spread across four university campuses: “Al. I. Cuza”, “22 Decembrie”,
“Politehnica” and “Radu Negru”. Accommodation facilities are offered to more than 3000
students.
The “Al. I. Cuza” campus is one of the most stylish in Romania, due to the perfect
combination between its architectural design and its small park.
The “Al. I. Cuza” hostel rooms are equipped with 2, 3 or 4 wooden beds, ecologic pillows
and mattresses, wooden cupboards, metal framed tables, chairs and shelves, thermo
pane windows, laminated wooden flooring, metal doors. The hostels have newly
renovated bathrooms, reading rooms, gyms, laundry rooms (with washing machines and
driers), internet and television – all free of charge.
The newest and the most modern accommodation facility is situated in the “Politehnica”
campus and can host up to 144 students in rooms which are equipped with wooden beds,
ecologic pillows and mattresses, metal framed chairs, double wooden cupboards, desks,
TV sets and refrigerators. All rooms have en-suite facilities, free wireless internet and
cable TV. The hostel also has four laundries (with washing machines and driers), four
kitchens with modern appliances and three reading rooms.
