Cultur and tradition Benvenuti a Verona – Welcome to Verona People of Verona have built for me, first, a small church between 372 and 380 A.D Later the church has been enlarged, modified and in the twelfth century it has been realized in the way you can see today. It’s just wonderful! In the lower part where you can see the three arcades there is a monumental staircase that leads in the crypt. Here I watch over too and I protect my loved town.

Cultur and tradition Benvenuti a Verona – Welcome to Verona

People of Verona have built for me, first, a small church between 372 and 380 A.D Later the church has been enlarged, modified and in the twelfth century it has been realized in the way you can see today. It’s just wonderful! In the lower part where you can see the three arcades there is a monumental staircase that leads in the crypt. Here I watch over too and I protect my loved town.

Voria cantar VeronaYou can read the following poem. The lyrics are in Veronese dialect. You

can also listen and watch a video which shows you the most beautiful sights of our town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDYrHEht9g8)

I would like to sing Verona . By night when our dreams seem

to be on the boats that sail the river Adige which flows

through villages and towns

And every place in Verona is reflected in the river

E in dove che è piantà Castel San Pietrosu le rovine del teatro antico,védar levarse su come de ferotuto intiero, el castel de Teodorico,on St Peter Hill there is the Teodorico Castle

e imaginarme rampegada adosso'na Verona cambià nei so colori:

tore e muralie del quarel più rosso,

case dipinte e ponti levadori,I can imagine Verona with its beautiful colours reflecting itself looking for villages and towns

a quei che passa, che no i volta via

sensa guardarla, sensa far dimanda

I would like to bring you under a beautiful window, just asking

who the owner is

Cultur and traditions Benvenuti a Verona – Welcome to Verona

I would like to punish all those people who liked

fighting

in cerca de paesi e de cità!

People who liked seeing blood running

down the bridges

Da là drento Giulieta discorea

co Romeo, col so dio, col so signor;

e l'era tanto el ben che i se volea

che no gh'è omo, no gh'è pianta o fior,

no gh'è mar, no gh'è Adese, che va

in cerca de paesi e de cità,

It was probably Juliet’s house, the place where

they loved each other so much and there is no sea,

no Adige which can tell their love story

che possa dirlo! - O storia de morosi

capitada fin qua traverso i soni

de tanti inverni, quando ch'era sposi

i papà dei papà de i nostri noni; ,

This story came to us from father to son, told

during the long cold winters

e ciese grande da le porte verte

lavorade de rissi e de figura,

o madonte piturade e incerte

fra un san Bernardo e un san Bonaventura;

Verona’s stones, you have seen a lot. Poverty and misery, but you are still

the same

e l'Adese in passando v'à basado

e l'Adese rompendo v'à lavà...

Po' l'è tornado a posto e el s'à insognado

altri ponti, altre case, altre cità!

You’ve been washed by the river which flows dreaming villages,

mountains and towns

Carnival is a very important tradition in our town

The Veronese delegation is known

and loved even abroad: they go every

year to Prague, Salzsburg and Berlin

to represent The Veronese Carnival.

THE LAST FRIDAY OF CARNIVAL IS

CALLED BACANAL DEL GNOCO.

The most important character (mask) is Papà del Gnoco ,

that is elected every year. The election takes place in San

Zeno square

This tradition has three meanings:

Playful, historical, beneficial.

The most important mask, the king of the Veronese Carnival,

is called PAPA’ DEL GNOCO.

The “gnoco” is a typical Veronese

dish made of flour, potatoes and water: a dish which could be eaten also by

poor people
