2. October 14, 1962
- A United States U2 spy plane discovers medium range ballistic missile silos in various stages of development in Cuba
3. October 15, 1962
-After analysis from United States military advisers it is determined that the missile bases are for offensive weapons
4. October 16, 1962
-The President is informed of the threat and he gathers a group of advisors that will become known as the Executive Committee or the National Security Council
5. October 17, 1962
-Kennedy spends the day meeting with advisors and discussing various courses of action and their potential consequences
6. October 18, 1962
-Soviet Union lies to Kennedy, saying sites are only for defensive purposes
-Kennedy orders further U2 flights leading to discovery of 7 additional missile sites, including medium and long range missiles
7. October 19, 1962
-The escalating threat leads President Kennedy to cancel a campaign stop in Chicago so he can return to Washington
-Media is told that the President must return due to a cold
8. October 20, 1962
-The President and his advisors determine their course of action moving forward
-Military preparations are made
9. October 21, 1962
-The United States notifies its allies of the growing threat in Cuba and the escalating tensions with the U.S.S.R
10. October 22, 1962
-President Kennedy goes live on national television to inform United States citizens of the looming danger of nuclear war
11. October 23, 1962
-The United States decides to enact a naval blockade of Cuba, meant to keep weapons or other military equipment from reaching the country
12. October 24, 1962
Naval blockade and quarantine of Cuba go into effect at 10 am EDT
13. October 25, 1962
- After a denial made by the U.S.S.R the United States presents aerial photos of Cuban missile sites to the United Nations
14. October 26, 1962
-United States naval vessels stop and inspect a dry cargo vessel sailing to Cuba under charter by the USSR
15. October 27, 1962
-Tensions escalate; U.S. spy plan shot down by Cuban anti-aircraft fire, the United States issues ultimatum to U.S.S.R and prepares to invade Cuban missile sites
16. October 28, 1962
- U.S.S.R agrees to withdrawal missiles with withdrawal of U.S. missiles and Turkey and guarantee that U.S. wont proceed with invasion or other offensive action
