reland, Éire, described as the Republic of Ireland is a country in northwestern

Europe. The modern sovereign state occupies about five-sixths of the island of Ireland, which waspartitioned into two jurisdictions in 1921.It is a parliamentary democracy and a republic. It is bordered tothe northeast by Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom, and is otherwise surroundedby the Atlantic Ocean: particularly, the Irish Sea to the east, St George's Channel to the southeast, andt h e C e l t i c S e a t o t h e s o u t h .

he state, initially named the Irish Free State, was established in

1922, as a dominion within the British Commonwealth, andgained increasing sovereignty through the Statute ofWestminster and the abdication crisis of 1936. A newconstitution was introduced in 1937 that declared an entirelysovereign state and named it simply as Ireland. In 1949, the lastformal link with the UK was severed when Ireland declared itself arepublic and formally ceased to be a dominion: consequently itleft the then British Commonwealth, having already ceased toparticipate in that organisation for several years.

uring British rule and initial independence Ireland was one of the poorest countries in Western

Europe and had high emigration, but in contrast to many other states in the period remained financiallysolvent as a result of low government expenditure. The protectionist economy was opened in the late1950s and Ireland joined the European Economic Community (now the European Union) in 1973. Aneconomic crisis led Ireland to start large-scale economic reforms in the late 1980s. Ireland reducedtaxation and regulation dramatically compared to other EU countries.

anked as the 31st economic power in the world, by 2006 Ireland had the sixth highest gross domestic

product per capita and the eighth highest per capita considering purchasing powerparity,[17][18] although by 2008 the country was being linked to the PIGS economies, and has thefifth highest Human Development Index rank in the world. The country also has the highestquality of life in the world, ranking first in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Quality-of-life index.Ireland was ranked sixth on the Global Peace Index. Ireland also has high rankings for its educationsystem, political freedom and civil rights, press freedom (ranked first in 2009) and economicfreedom (ranked fourth in 2009); it is also ranked fifth from bottom on the Failed States Index,

The Irish state came into being as the result of Irish partition in 1921 which divided the island of Ireland intoSouthern Ireland and Northern Ireland. In December 1922, the former seceded from the United Kingdom of

Great Britain and Ireland to become the Irish Free State while the latter optedto remain within the United Kingdom.[22] In December 1937 the state wasrenamed Ireland[13] and on Easter Monday 1949 Ireland left the BritishCommonwealth to become a republic.Irish independence from Britain in 1922 was preceded by the 1916 Easter Risingand the War of Independence, when Irish volunteers and the Irish Citizen Armytook over sites in Dublin and Galway under terms expressed in the Proclamationof the Irish Republic. The seven signatories of this proclamation, PatrickPearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Thomas Clarke, Sean MacDiarmada, JosephPlunkett, Eamonn Ceannt and James Connolly, were executed by theBritish, along with nine others, and thousands were interned precipitating

mThe Great Famine ( : an Gorta Mór the Great Hunger) was a period of massstarvation, disease and emigration in between 1845 and 1852 duringwhich the island's population dropped by 20 to 25 percent. Approximately onemillion people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland. The

Its effectspermanently changed the island's demographic, political and culturallandscape. For both the and those in the resulting

The Cliffs of Moher (Irish: Aillte an Mhothair, lit. cliffs of the ruin, also known as the Cliffs of Mohair) arelocated in the parish of Liscannor at the south-western edge of the Burren area near Doolin, which is locatedin County Clare, Ireland.[1] The Cliffs arecurrently one of the 2 8 f i n a l i s t s f o r T h eNew7Wonders of Nature. (The official listwill be declared in 2011.)

The cliffs rise 120 meters (394 ft) above theAtlantic Ocean at Hag's Head (Irish: Ceannna Cailleach), and reach their maximumh e i g h t o f 2 1 4 meters (702 ft) just northof O'Brien's Tower, eight kilometres away.[2]The cliffs boast one o f I r e l a n d ' s m o s ts p e c t a c u l a r views.[3] On a clear day,the Aran Islands are visible in Galway Bay,as are the valleys and hills of Connemara.

O'Brien's Tower is a round stone tower at the approximate midpoint of the cliffs. It was built by Sir CorneliusO'Brien, a descendant of Ireland's High King Brian Boru, in order to impress female visitors.[4] From atop thatwatchtower, one can view the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, the Maum Turk Mountains and the Twelve Pinsto the north in Connemara, and Loop Head to the south.

Brú na Bóinne (Irish:, Palace of the Boyne) is a World Heritage Site in County Meath, Ireland and is thelargest and one of the most important prehistoric megalithic sites in Europe. It is a complex ofNeolithic chamber tombs, standing stones, henges and other prehistoric enclosures, some dating fromas early as 35th century BC - 32nd century BC. The site predates the Egyptian pyramids and was builtwith sophistication and a knowledge of science and astronomy, which is most evident in the passagegrave of Newgrange. The site is often referred to as the "Bend of the Boyne" and this is often(incorrectly) taken to be a translation of Brú na Bóinne (Palace of the Boyne).

The site covers 780ha and contains around 40 passage graves, as well as other prehistoric sites andlater features. The majority of the monuments are concentrated on the north side of the river. The mostwell-known sites within Brú na Bóinne are the impressive passage graves of Newgrange, Knowth andDowth all famous for their significant collections of megalithic art. Each stands on a ridge within theriver bend and two of the tombs, Knowth and Newgrange appear to contain stones re-used from anearlier monument at the site. There is no in situ evidence for earlier activity at the site, save for thespotfinds of flint tools left by Mesolithic hunters.
