Inked In Love: A small company with a huge messageBy Joseph Kassabian

Inked in Love is a small company based in Detroit, Michigan trying to deliver a huge message. Ran out of the basement of Owner and Operator Josh Kassabian, he hand prints shirts, stickers, and patches in an attempt to raise awareness for various different charities and causes. I sat down with him to learn more about this unique start up.

CTX: How did Inked In Love get started?

Josh: Inked In Love was started in my basement 3 years ago as a concept. After I was repeatedly told, "when I first met you I was scared, I thought you would be mean but your really really nice!"

CTX: What is inked in love all about?

Josh: A concept that would take heavily tattooed individuals and give them an opportunity to show their generous, unique reality. Society is telling us, your allowed to do what you want, but if you choose to get tattooed your not a professional in your career, your a criminal or you make poor choices. While many people will argue that's simply not true, they won't hire you either. I'm tattooed, not uneducated.

CTX: How was your launch?

Josh: The initial launch was donating time and helping out at charity events 3 years ago. Eventually we evolved into a clothing line in November 2012. The initial press of shirts was a logo and just handed out to raise awareness.

CTX: What has been the hardest thing so far?

Josh: Our current struggle has been money as usually everything in the world comes down to. Inked In Love is trying to raise money to kick off a quality clothing brand for tattooed individuals and supportive of non-tattooed causes. The overall goal for Inked In Love is to simply let good people tattooed or not has a way to show that they are good people regardless of their social handicaps. In our case we focus on giving tattooed individuals a way to help their community and show they are not these monsters and unprofessional individuals they are portrayed to be. I have a heart; I care about others and enjoy helping others. Suicide Awareness to homeless veterans, rainbow connection, shelters or simply sitting down and listening to someone. I want to raise awareness that people out there need you, and regardless of how we look, by choice or birth we are capable, caring and hardworking.

CTX: How could someone support Inked In Love or buy something?

Josh: To support Inked In love visit our Facebook for the most current updates. Our website will be up soon and include our clothing line in which you can place orders, receive information and find current charities needing your time. You can donate any amount at: www.gofundme.com/inkedinlove and check out info on our Facebook or official page: Facebook.com/inkedinlove ; Www.inkedinlove.com or send any email to: [email protected]

The Arkansas Senate recently passed a bill to ban tattoos, piercings, and other body modifications which it describes as “non-traditional”. Senator Missy Irvin sponsored the bill originally to ban scarification, dermal implants, and “certain tattoos” which have not yet been defined as the language in the bill is incredibly vague. In an event harkening back to the days that people believed rock music was fueled by Devil worship, the bill passed in a 26-4 vote.

Following that vote it was sent to the house where it gained even more vague language and the scarification ban was dropped. In essence with their wording of the bill they have effectively banned any kind of body modification “unless performed by a doctor”. Senators argued for their bill pointing to an increased risk of infection associated with “non-traditional” body modifications. There has been a loud outcry by the Arkansas tattoo and piercing community, which pressured the Senate to drop the scarification ban.

Unfortunately this follows a trend of late, with Washington D.C., once known as one of the few places without any tattoo industry regulations, submitted a bill that would institute a 24-hour waiting period before you could get any work done, which if you notice is the same amount of time you have to wait to buy a rifle in the state of Illinois, and to get an abortion in the states of Arizona, Texas, and Missouri. Are tattoos really in the same realm of regulation?

The argument that certain body modifications are “non-traditional” is senseless, since West African tribes have been practicing forms of dermal implants and scarification for hundreds of years and are an integral part of various cultures, just as tattooing has been around since the Neolithic period, in that sense the suits the lawmakers wear in the capital are less traditional than body art. The more obvious argument to have against this bill is the implication that the government can legislate what you can, and cannot do to your own body, with your own money.
