Clean TechnologyWhat is it Really?

Page 4: CTTA; A Unique Organization

Clean Technology Whatis.com: http://whatis.techtarget.com/

Clean technology (clean tech) is a general term used to describe products, processes or services that reduce waste and require as few non-renewable resources as possible.

The Clean Technology Trade Alliance, a global initiative to drive the expansion of clean tech, defines it as: A broad base of processes, practices and tools, in any industry that supports a sustainable business approach, including but not limited to: pollution control, resource reduction and management, end of life strategy, waste reduction, energy efficiency, carbon mitigation and profitability.

That was then and this is now:While the base definition is still correct it cannot be separated from sustainability at any point and continue to be valid.

This does not mean that transitional strategies on the path to sustainability utilizing clean technology are not valid, just not complete.

To truly adopt a clean technology solution it is necessary to look beyond the technology and analyze the entire process from need to outcome. First and foremost you must ask the basic questions of why, how, what, where, who, and when:• Why do I need it?• How does it meet my need?• What do I need?• Where can I get it?• Who can do the best job of providing a complete solution?• When will it be done?

CTTA can provide answers to many of these questions and help you to answer the rest.

The Foundation to Improve/Create Local IndustryClusters are groups of inter-related industries within a geographic region. An industry

cluster represents the entire value chain from suppliers to end products, including supporting services and specialized infrastructure. The primary benefit of an industry cluster within a specific geographic region is the economic base created through jobs and support services.

Clean Technology solutions can be applied to existing industry clusters in order to eliminate many of the negative externalities and social costs that are currently being left for local communities and governments to address. Keeping existing industries in a local economy is paramount. Improving the local outcomes by eliminating the negative externalities is the emerging expectation being placed on industry.

Clean Technology solutions can also be applied within geographies that are trying to establish or improve their economic base but no longer have the natural resource capacity (clean water, energy, pollution sinks, skilled workforce, etc.) to attract conventional industries. With a primary focus on resource use efficiency and the elimination of negative externalities (pollution), clean tech solutions can bring industry back to regions that are resource constrained.

Doing BusinessAt its core, business is selling

something to meet a need. The seller should make a reasonable profit and the buyer should realize a reasonable return on their investment.

CTTA requires its members meet this foundational definition of business. They provide a product, service or combination that solve customer problems efficiently, while minimizing negative externalities fair cost, and provide a return on investment to the customer. Only through this process and the resulting relationships and agreements can CTTA assure the customer of the outcome.

By identifying these companies for businesses and projects (customers) CTTA reduces their risk of adoption.

Collaboration and Coalition

SynergySynergy happens when the outcome is greater than the sum of the parts. And synergy can only happen through collaboration.CTTA is designed to create a space for members to collaborate, develop and implement solutions that address complex issues. Synergy is vital to meeting the challenges of today and tomorrow where no silver bullet exists. The creativity and flexibility necessary only exists in companies small enough to have vision, flexibility and engaged leadership. Only CTTA is designed to find the companies with the technologies and services and create the space where synergy happens.

TrustTrust is built through shared experience. All CTTA members have experienced the CTTA process and CTTA facilitation so they all learn to trust each other.

Trust begins with member designed participation in the process.

After the initial screening conversation, the first contact with CTTA for a potential member is an existing member. That contact is a mutual interview where potential members come to understand what CTTA is and the CTTA members can assess the aspiring member, providing the first step in the validation process.

This first step begins the development of trust through shared experience.

Companies and The New/Old Paradigm

CompaniesParadigms are tricky things. Our paradigm until the 1980’s was providing a product or service that had value to the customer, manufacturing that product locally and providing jobs that created customers. Innovation met the needs of our changing world and resources were available for companies to launch and develop solutions and create more jobs.

The shift to manufactured demand and consolidation of ever-larger, ever-fewer corporations has created a top heavy economic environment that is eroding its own foundation through job loss and resource restriction.

Paradigms change and CTTA is working to take the best of the pre manufactured demand economy and the drive of innovative companies to meet the needs of today and tomorrow.

CommitmentCommitment means sticking to your core values even when it isn’t easy. The focus on large publicly traded corporate solutions has not delivered on the promise of innovation, reduced risk, job creation, quality or flexibility. Their only guaranteed commitment is to shareholder profit.

CTTA members have commitment:• Commitment to the customer• Commitment to each other and CTTA• Commitment to quality• Commitment to innovation• Commitment to offering sustainable

solutions• Commitment to being sustainable• Commitment to ethical behavior• Commitment to transparency

ChangeSustainabilityThe ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed.

Or in the oft quoted words of the Brundtland Commission, “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

A sustainable approach reduces risk and resource costs, and increases efficiency. It is a philosophy to be taught at all levels, a process to be engaged in, with technologies to be identified and implemented.

There are upfront investments to be made, but the long term savings provide a significant return on that investment that continues to pay dividends into the future.

Sustainability is a profit center, not just a marketing tool!

Future ProofingChange is inevitable and with your efforts you either adapt or die. It really is that simple. Change is the only constant.

To produce longevity, a sustainable approach needs be flexible in its DNA. You cannot just purchase a widget or an education package, everyone on the team must embrace change from the ground up. And this is challenging. It is an investment beyond money that pays ongoing dividends. Change does not come from a marketing effort fueled by a team with no power to shift the way people think.

Adapt or die. Change is inevitable and a sustainable approach is the only path that will lead to a future-proof process.

Changing Times Require Adaptive ApproachesWe live in interesting times… Is it a curse or an opportunity?

Either way, the one certainty is that traditional approaches to problems are requiring more effort and often prove ineffective. There are many reasons for this, some environmental, some financial, some cultural and political.  The point is, change is occurring and new paths need to be developed to succeed or even survive.

CTTA is aware of this and focuses on developing alternative strategies to garner adoption and identify new customer types and funding sources. We approach each project from a solution based perspective, not by focusing on preconceived notions, but by bringing our creative problem solving skills to bear with our efforts informed by the needs and values of the stakeholders, regardless of who they turn out to be.

Changing times require adaptive strategies and CTTA brings that service to our members and our member developed projects.
