Focus
ISTeC Big Data Forum April, 2013
CSU Research Cloud
• Purpose is to enable the research community by addressing exponential storage needs
• Easy, safe, and economical storage solution• Managed by central IT personnel – Leverages existing personnel and infrastructure– Consistent with campus standards
• Data replication, plus RAID architecture• Based on inexpensive, locally developed storage
appliances
ISTeC Big Data Forum April, 2013
Case for local cloud storage
• CSU has no affordable, centralized storage options available to the research community
• Inefficient, “random” campus solutions result• Alternative, Commercial Cloud Services– Require EULA (which no one reads, understands)– Raise questions about privacy, security– Imply slow transfer speeds– Not the best response for data mgmt. plans

Funding RequestDescription Total Cost
Base systems (one at each data center) $25,200
Storage – 80 TB usable, geo-replicated $44,500
Servers to provide file systems to researchers
$22,000
Fibre Channel storage fabric $26,000
Total $117,700
50% Cost share with ACNS $58,850

Governance
• Under the auspices of ISTeC Management and Allocations Committee (MAC)– Has been successful in managing the Cray– Membership is flexible, includes 5 colleges– Proposing an Ex Officio member from ACNS
• Will take up to a year to develop policies, procedures, and best practices
• Will produce an annual report to VPR
ISTeC Big Data Forum April, 2013
Management & Operations
• ACNS has agreed to build and manage the infrastructure
• Ease of use – data portability facilitated via access to the campus data network
• Open and available to the entire research community
ISTeC Big Data Forum April, 2013
Sustainable Financial Model
• Charge back model - $550/TB/year– Generates $44K/year once fully populated– Allows for incremental growth as required– Until governance is established, recommended
researchers can use up to 3 TB each at no cost for first year
• Only one year of funding requested

Questions and Discussions
• Are most welcome– Help us to understand your needs and constraints– How can central IT best step up to meet your
specific, unmet needs?– What do you think is a sustainable business
model?– How can we best work with you to better facilitate
the research needs of the camps?– Other?
