Dear friends,

from the president

Sissy and I are celebrating 25 years of service as President and First Lady at Charleston Southern University.

Thanks to the support of our board, faculty, staff, alumni and friends much has been accomplished during this time.

The University remains committed to fulfilling our founder’s dream of sharing the gospel with every student. We are

grateful for our lifetime partnership with the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Funds provided by South Carolina Baptists

through the Cooperative Program provide significant financial assistance to our students. God is blessing our efforts to

achieve our vision to be a Christian university nationally recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving.

We remain true to our mission of preparing graduates and transforming lives. One of the best measures of our efforts is

the fact that more than 1,200 decisions were made for Christ last year as a result of our ministries on and off campus.

This summer, we had numerous faculty, students, and staff involved in global education and missions around the world.

Graduates of the 1969 founding class of Baptist College at Charleston enjoyed a 40th Reunion Celebration on campus

during homecoming on October 24. The theme for the event was Gateway from the Past to the Present. Everyone enjoyed

seeing familiar faces and renewing friendships.

The future of CSU is bright and challenging. Our current enrollment of 3,236 is projected to reach 4,000 by 2020.

Three capital projects on the horizon are the Christian Leadership building; an athletic center with men’s and women’s

locker rooms, offices and study stations; and a Convocation Center with a basketball arena.

What wonderful memories were invoked as I looked through the archived photographs in preparing for this magazine.

Some of these memories are reflected in the milestones you’ll read about for each of the past 25 years.

Sissy and I are grateful for the opportunity to serve as President and First Lady of Charleston Southern University,

and we thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jairy C. Hunter, Jr.

President

he blueprint for the success that CharlestonSouthern University enjoys today was carefullycrafted 25 years ago. It’s no coincidence that

this happened the same time Dr. Jairy C. Hunter Jr. wasnamed president.

“Dr. Hunter inherited a difficult financial situation,”said Brooks Moore, an alumnus, member of the foundingclass and former Buc Club president. One month beforeHunter was named president, the News and Courierreported that the Baptist College (now CharlestonSouthern University) was $4.5 million in debt ($2.7million for the chapel construction and $1.8 million invarious loans). “Jairy made some very tough decisions,”said Moore. “I respect him because he leads by example.”

This was exactly why Hunter was hired. His tenacity, business acumen and academic credentials are whatprompted Baptist College trustee Dr. Bob Cuttino to pickup the phone when the school was looking for itssecond president. A hometown friend from Lancaster,South Carolina, Cuttino had kept tabs on Hunter’s careerover the years.

“When Dr. Cuttino called me, I thought he wasasking me for a recommendation,” remembers Hunter. “Itold him I didn’t know anyone who would be qualifiedto be president of a church-related school.”

“No, I’m talking about you,” said Cuttino. “I sharedwith him that I had a good job at the University of NorthCarolina Wilmington as vice chancellor of developmentand business and professor of management,” said Hunter.

Cuttino asked Hunter to send a resume, and Hunteragreed. The field quickly narrowed from 45 applicants tofive finalists. Hunter was an impeccable candidate.

“We desperately needed a Baptist with business savvyand fundraising experience,” said Dr. A. Kennerley

Bonnette, who was one of two faculty members onthe presidential search committee in 1984. Strategicleadership was essential during this difficult time.

The nine-person search committee was chaired byWilliam H. Seals and was comprised of Dr. Bonnette, who became academic vice president and later provostbefore retiring in 2008; Dr. Carol Drowota, professor ofEnglish; trustees Robert E. Cuttino, W. Floyd Whitfield,Charlene Kirk, Mildred Bomar, James P. Craine and 1972alumnus Larry Cannon.

Hunter met the criteria. He was a Baptist leader witha PhD from Duke University, two master’s degrees andwas an experienced business person. Hunter had respectimmediately from the faculty, staff, students and alumni.

“We knew immediately that Jairy Hunter was God’sman for the job,” said Floyd Whitfield, a trustee andmember of the search committee. “He possessed agenuine Christian commitment, coupled with a wealthof academic and business experience.”

On May 17, 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter Jr. was namedthe second president of the Baptist College. Hunter said,“I honestly didn’t realize it at the time that the Lord hadbeen preparing me for this assignment. As years passed,it became evident that this was God’s plan. In fact, mywife, Sissy, strongly encouraged me to accept theposition after visiting the campus and meeting with thesearch committee. She felt that the college needed apresident with my background.”

Dr. Joe Wren, pastor at Summerville Baptist Church, former chairman of the board of trustees, said, “I believethat Jairy was called by God to lead the school.”

Hunter’s first day on the job was July 15, 1984. Hespent the first months listening, assessing the situationand gathering input. Then he and key leaders drafteda strategic plan that included three phases: survival, stability and excellence, remembers Bonnette.

Phase One: Survival. The board of trustees adopted a clear mission statement

for the college as one of the first moves of survival: promot-ing academic excellence in a Christian environment.

The executive board of the South Carolina BaptistConvention (SCBC) agreed to help the college restructureits debt payment plan. The SCBC also gave the collegepermission to conduct a marketing and fundraisingcampaign for five years in the 2,000 Baptist churches. Thiswas an unprecedented action taken by the conventionthat allowed the president to share the college’s strategicplan and promote the institution.

In November 1984, the college celebrated the openingof the Lightsey Chapel Auditorium and Music Building. The celebration was highlighted with former GovernorRobert McNair speaking at the ceremonies. Two days later,NASA Astronaut Dick Scobee and his wife, Dr. JuneScobee, a Baptist College graduate, presented itemsthat had been taken on the flight of the Challenger earlierin the year.

“The chapel symbolized a new beginning,” remem-bered Bonnette. “The chapel was what we stood for. Itwas a shining moment, a turning point.”

In May 1985, the first graduation was held in theLightsey Chapel. The first students to receive a master’sdegree from the University were also honored. UnderHunter’s leadership and with support from everyoneaffiliated with the school, the second year ended with abalanced budget. The University has operated consis-tently in the black since that time.

In the spring of 1986, Hunter stood onstage at theLightsey Chapel Auditorium for his official inauguration.Former presidential search committee chair William H.Seals shared his perspective on Hunter’s leadership aspresident.

“As Dickens said of the French Revolution, they wereleaderless, the people were in despair, the people werewithout direction - and so it was here at Baptist College,”Seals told the audience. “Jairy Hunter came here andaccepted the challenge. It was the worst of times, butJairy Hunter made it the best of times. We were indespair, but he gave us hope.”

Phase Two: Stability. After two years, the school moved to phase two of the

strategic plan: stability. The institution began to moveforward with confidence.

In 1988 Hunter led the effort to create the board ofvisitors (BOV). The primary purpose of this organizationcontinues to be providing student scholarships andnetworking. The first officers of the BOV were: RonaldBanks, chairman; Hal Adams, vice chairman; andThomas Warwick, secretary/treasurer.

Local CPA and supporter Ronnie Givens cited thecreation of the board of visitors as one of Hunter’s earlyinnovative ideas. Members of the board of visitors raisemoney for the school throughout the community andSoutheast creating an awareness of the school’s mission.

“Dr. Hunter’s personality and his positive attitudegave confidence to the school’s creditors and donorsthat the college was moving forward,” said Givens. “Hisbusiness experience and entrepreneurial spirit enabledthe school to rise from the ashes.”

Currently, Charleston Southern has 375 members onthe board of visitors, and alumni support continues toincrease. “Each year, my office is privileged to host theannual scholarship luncheon which gives students andtheir donors a chance to meet. The heartwarming storiesthe students share underscore the life-changing impactof our donors on the students and the University,” saidBill Ward, executive director of development.

“The board of visitors is an excellent program forraising support and money,” said Rosser Thrash, retiredowner of T & T Sports in Charleston and a longtimemember of the board of visitors.

While Hunter was leading on campus, Mrs. Hunterwas doing the same in the community. Mrs. Charlene Kirkand other local women organized the Women’s Council(formerly called the Women’s Auxiliary Advisory Council)at CSU. First Lady Sissy Hunter has worked closely withthe Women’s Council since its inception. This organiza-tion continues to raise thousands of dollars for studentscholarships and campus beautification.

The board of trustees awarded Mrs. Hunter an hon-orary doctor of education in 1999 for her commitmentand service to the University. “Words cannot express myappreciation for this recognition,” said Sissy Hunter.“Serving Charleston Southern is indeed an honor.”

“Sissy and Jairy are a great team,” said Wren. “They’recaring people and serve in many roles in the community.”

“Sissy Hunter has been a good partner for him ingrowing the school,” said Summerville mayor and one ofthe school’s founders, Berlin G. Myers.

“She works so hard for the college,” said JoanMcKissick, wife of legendary Summerville High Schoolfootball coach John McKissick. “The school has added alot to our community.”

The campus has undergone unprecedented growththrough new construction and renovation. Eight newbuildings have been opened since Hunter’s arrival, starting with the dedication of the Lightsey Chapel inNovember 1984.

Since then, and with the support of generous friendsand donors, the University has added the HunterReception Center (1991), Derry Patterson WingoNursing building (1995), the Brewer Center (2000)which included Edwards Express, Whittington Hall(2000), Whitfield Stadium Center (2000), the sciencebuilding (2005) and, most recently, the Wingate byWyndham (2008).

Another reason for the University’s success is thegrowth and development of Charleston Southern’sathletic programs. With faith-driven athletic leadership, the Buccaneers athletic programs have been growingsteadily and competing consistently. After an amazingrun in 1997, the CSU Bucs men’s basketball teamadvanced to the NCAA tournament before losing toUCLA. During the seven-year period from 1995-2002,10 CSU teams competed in the NCAA postseason.

As president, Hunter has never lost the passion for con-necting with students. Every day he shares the Universityvision of integrating faith in learning, leading and serving.Hunter has taught at every school where he has workedand continues to teach each semester at CSU. He teachesthe MBA capstone course in strategic management.Hunter says one of his greatest joys is learning from andteaching a new group of students each semester.

“Our students have a fantastic opportunity to learn ina culture that honors Christ. We remain committed tofulfilling the dream of the school’s founders of sharingthe gospel with every student,” said Hunter.

Givens confirms that the CSU educational experienceis producing uniquely qualified employees and futureleaders. And he should know; he’s hired numerousgraduates to work at his accounting firm.

“Students come well prepared academically, andwe don’t have to teach them ethics,” Givens said.“During Jairy Hunter’s years at CSU, the school hasnever lost its commitment to academic excellence in aChristian environment.”

“The school is making a positive difference in equippingleaders with a Christian perspective,” said Wren.

In 1990, the trustees and South Carolina Baptistsvoted to change the school’s name from Baptist Collegeat Charleston to Charleston Southern University. Thischange signaled the recognition of university status andgreater marketing appeal. The school’s mission remainedthe same, but opportunities for growth multiplied.

In 1993, amidst steady growth and stability, recogni-tion increased. Charleston Southern was named to TheJohn Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for CharacterBuilding Colleges. The honor placed the University on ashort list of colleges that best exemplify campuses thatpromote high integrity and encourage the developmentof strong moral character among students.

Today, the University offers four graduate programs(education, business, criminal justice and nursing). Themaster of science in nursing education began enrollingstudents this fall.

“These changes never would have happened withoutthe president’s nudging or full support,” said Bonnette.“We had one graduate program when he came. Now weare accredited to offer a full slate of graduate programs.”

“I’m proud to be an alumnus and excited about thegrowth, not only in enrollment, but in the programs andthe quality of the curriculum at the school,” said Moore.

The Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc. namedCSU one of “America’s Best College Buys” in 1998.This year, the University received the honor for the 11thstraight year. The company also added CharlestonSouthern to the list of “America’s Best Christian Colleges”in 2004. In September 2009, the University wasawarded the honor for the fifth consecutive year.

Charleston Southern University has been named byG.I. Jobs magazine a Military Friendly School for 2010.This honor ranks CSU in the top 15 percent of allcolleges, universities and trade schools nationwide. Thisfall the Charleston Southern ROTC program washonored as the best small detachment unit in theSoutheast region for the fourth time in six years.

Since day one Hunter credits the excellent faculty andstaff for the University’s continued growth and success.“Our faculty and staff combine the finest professionalpreparation with a servant’s heart. Their love of the Lordshows in the way they care about others,” Hunter said.

“When Dr. Hunter came to CSU, he brought solidleadership that the college needed, and the school hascontinued to grow,” said John McKissick, athleticdirector at Summerville High. “A lot of kids whograduated from Summerville High have gone toCharleston Southern because they could live at homeand take classes close by. The college has been reallygood for the community.”

Phase Three: Excellence. With university status and a reputation for academic

achievement, the University began to move into theexcellence phase.

The commitment to excellence is paying dividends inthe classroom. When Hunter arrived in 1984, enrollmentwas 1,646. The University reached new heights with anenrollment of 3,236 this fall.

“We have experienced an incredible two decades ofgrowth at CSU,” said Debbie Williamson, vice presidentfor enrollment. “The growth has come in a myriad ofareas: enrollment, academic, athletic and, mostimportantly, spiritual. God has certainly been active onthe CSU campus. I believe we are closer to our missionand vision than ever before and this is manifesting itselfin a higher education experience that is preparinggraduates and transforming lives.”

Excellence is evident in the classroom. Our nursinggraduates have an average pass rate of 98 percent on thefirst attempt on the National Council LicensureExamination – Registered Nurse over the last three years.Nine new teachers from the School of Education werenamed Honored Educators based on high scores on thePraxis II assessment, and four were named RookieTeachers of the Year. Seniors in the School of Business’sNonprofit Marketing class developed a fundraisingproject that will eventually lead to an endowed scholar-ship. Our campus ministries department is active offcampus as well as on. Sixty-one students trained to becounselors for The Franklin Graham Festival inCharleston last fall. The University sends interns toStudent Leadership University each summer, and serviceprojects large and small are a part of campus life. Thisyear students, faculty and staff have shared Christ in 11countries and 10 states on mission trips.

“The University continues to be true to its mission,”said Hunter. “In recent years, refining and clarifyingthe University’s vision has given us focus and direction. Our vision is to be a Christian university nationallyrecognized for integrating faith in learning, leading andserving. Our staffing and allocation of resources arefocused on achieving the University’s vision. We aresurely moving toward excellence.”

“It has been my privilege to serve on the leadershipteam at CSU for 22 years,” said Dr. Rick Brewer, vicepresident for student affairs and athletics. “The growth ofthe university has been expressed in academic qualityand commitment to the university’s mission. The solidleadership of Dr. Hunter to the task of building aChristian university devoted to scholarship whileuncompromisingly emphasizing spiritual developmenthas been the key to the institution’s sustainable growth.”

“Dr. Hunter has tapped into a new source of excite-ment with the University’s efforts to move to the nextlevel of faith integration,” said Dr. Jim Colman, vicepresident for academic affairs. “As we have sharpenedthe University’s focus on this primary distinctive, Dr.Hunter has led the way in encouraging the wholecampus community to become more intentional withintegrating biblical truth.”

“He was from a blue collar working family in Lancaster,”said Bonnette. “He had those small town values andbelieved in the Christian value system. Because of hispersonal experiences he had enormous empathy for adultstudents going back to school. Jairy understood ourmission, our role from the very beginning. I remember himtelling us that every college espouses academic excellencebut the reason we do it is first to honor God.”

At spring commencement in May 2009, Hunter wassurprised with an honorary doctorate in public serviceby the board of trustees. Ron Brantley, chairman of theBoard, said, “Jairy and Sissy Hunter are dedicated tothe mission and vision of the University. They are myfriends, and I look forward to serving with them in thefuture.” Secretary of the Board, Gloria Thiem added,“I have seen many changes that have all been to thebetterment of the University since Sissy and Jairy cameto CSU. Their dedication is seen in many facets on alocal and national level.”

North Charleston mayor and CSU alumnus R. KeithSummey declared July 15, 2009, Dr. Jairy and SissyHunter Day in North Charleston.

“The City of North Charleston is grateful for theHunters and looks forward to the continuing success ofCharleston Southern University,” announced the mayor.

In September 2009 at Convocation, Hunter was hon-ored again when he received the Order of the Palmetto. The award is considered the highest civilian honor in thestate of South Carolina and recognizes a person’s lifetimeachievements and contributions to the state.

“This is one of the highest honors of my career,”said Hunter.

Hunter reflects, “The greatest challenge that weenvision is providing financial aid for our students. Thepopularity of the school grows every year. Highly qualifiedstudents want to come here, but there is a financial gap tofill. The S.C. Baptist Convention, through the CooperativeProgram fund, continues to provide much-neededfinancial assistance to our students, along with federal, state and donor support. We will continue to workdiligently to raise funds to fill this gap. Securing sufficientstudent financial aid is our greatest challenge.”

“The second challenge is providing the capitalfacilities consistent with our growth,” said Hunter.“Three projects that are on the horizon are the ChristianLeadership building, an athletic center with men’s andwomen’s locker rooms, offices and study stations whichwill assist our athletes and trainers, and a ConvocationCenter with a basketball arena.”

In 25 years, Hunter has led the institution in develop-ing a sound mission and an inspiring vision. Enrollmenthas doubled; eight buildings have been built; he hascultivated a thriving board of visitors, and numerousprograms and services have been added. Future plansare to expand enrollment to 4,000 by 2020. Maybe nowwould be a good time to think about retiring.

Retirement? No – for Hunter the explanation is quitesimple: our work is not done, and students needfinancial assistance.

And let’s not forget William Seals’ final words in 1986:“… It is my vision that somewhere, someday, JairyHunter will go down in history as having been anintegral part of the growth of Baptist College, of makingit what it ought to be and what it should be and whatit can be.”

Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union

With more than 200 employees and amember-focused philosophy, HeritageTrust Federal Credit Union continues tobe a perfect alternative to banks in theLowcountry. What sets Heritage Trustapart from the competitors is its consistent,long-term commitment to both its 50,000members as well as employees. HeritageTrust is a financially sound organizationthat has successfully served the greater

Charleston community since 1955 and is the only financialinstitution in the Charleston area that has purchased additional, private share insurance coverage on top of the federal amount.

This means Heritage Trust’s member accounts are protected upto $500,000. IRAs are also covered up to $500,000. By concen-trating on the needs and best interests of its members, HeritageTrust has been able to maintain growth and stability even in themidst of economic downturn. “Heritage Trust’s growth and suc-cess can be attributed to our member’s loyalty over the years, embracing change to provide our members with the best technol-ogy and products and services available, hiring great employeesand consistently serving and supporting our local community,”said President and CEO James McDaniel Sr.

Convenience:• 10 branch locations and over 36 ATMs throughout the region.• The credit union’s Web site, www.HeritageTrust.org is available

for members 24/7 to apply for loans, pay bills, view account balances or sign up to receive e-statements.

• Members can also sign up for Mobile Banking for access via their cell phones.

• As a participant in the Shared Branching network, Heritage Trust members who are traveling or relocating can access the services of almost 3,000 credit unions worldwide.

Service:• The credit union’s highly-skilled and dedicated professionals

are available to assist members every day.• Staff are trained to answer member questions and provide

easy access and assistance to product information, loan processing, account information and more.

Trust:• Since Heritage Trust’s members are its owners, members

actively participate in the organization’s future by electing the credit union’s Board of Directors.

• Founded on the philosophy of “people helping people,” credit unions exist only to serve members.

PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL MEMBER

Dr. and Mrs. Tim Spurling

1 John 3:2 “But we knowthat when he appears, [a]we shall be like him, forwe shall see him as he is.”

One day we will be likehim - if this is true we areworks in progress on ourway to being a master-piece. If the work isprogressing it stands toreason that we shouldsee something of beauty

emerging from our lives; we should see that change happening. We should look different than we did 10 years ago, look morelike him, act more like him and sound more like him. That’swhat I see in my wife, Susan, whom I love.

The Presidential Council and our yearly mission trips toRomania (We have just completed our 12th mission trip toRomania.) are two ways we have seen the change in our lives. This year a Charleston Southern student, Joshua Gale wentwith us. The council is a way to encourage college students toseek Christ. The trips to Romania are reaching out to thosethat the world has neglected and abused and rejected. The lovefor them is God’s doing, without Christ in our lives thesechanges would never have taken place.

We are proud of our family: our oldest daughter, Alicia Streett, owns and runs an equestrian center in Florence; Charlie herhusband runs a fabrication company, their two children, Alexand Kirsten attend Kings Academy in Florence; our seconddaughter, Amanda Spurling, graduated from AndersonUniversity; our third daughter, Ashley Taylor, just graduatedfrom Charleston Southern University; our youngest, ZacharyTaylor, is a Senior at Kings Academy in Florence. A son, TJ,was lost in a car accident at 16, but we know that he is inheaven. The Lord has blessed us in too many ways to count.

We are blessed with many patients and friends, the by-productof practicing medicine in one place for 24 years.
