Sal Plate Enterprise in Partnership With IIT Kharagpur, Mejia, West Bengal
Sal is so important for the tribals that the
tree is worshiped by them for its won-
derful nature of providing multiple pro-
ducts for their livelihood. Dried sal leaves
are used widely in temples and marriage
ceremonies as plates for eating food. The
tribals collect these sal leaves and siali
leaves and stitch them into plates and
cups.
Under NIDHEEs Programme Unnati
(Employability Programme) a Sal Plate
Enterprise project was carried out in
Amdanga and Haspahari villages of Lotiyaboni Panchayat. The year long programme is being conducted in association with theIndian Institute of Techonolgy, Kharagpur which is the implementing authority of the project.
About 40 families from Amdanga and Haspahari villages will benefit from this project. In these areas Sal leaves are collected from
the nearby forests and hence, offers high value addition to the products not only in terms of Sal Plate quality but also the profi-
tability.
Lafarge staff meeting the village sal plate womenentrepreneurs
IIT will train the village women in using bio mass operated machines which will be used for moulding the sal plates. These
machines are ecofriendly and yield better result. The need for plastic film for bonding two leaves is negated. Trimming of leaves
through smooth shearing action results in minimum fatigue and health injury. This Biomass fuelling Sal Leaf Plate Mould (SLPM)
machine is an innovation patented by IIT Kharagpur.
Sukurmani Hamrom is a 45 year tribal lady from village Haspahadi who was very
excited to receive the training of sal leaf plate making by the biomass machine.
Previously she had to make the plates by hand and therefore received a very less
price for it in the market. After this training she is able to make good plates with
less effort by machine and thus, will be able to fetch a better price. This will defi-
nitely help her improve her standard of living. She on behalf of her entire village
thanks Lafarge India and IIT for giving the leaf plate making machine and the trai-
ning to operate it.

Rural Skilling Programme, Himachal Pradesh
EMPLOYABILITY
Rural skilling and employability programme for unemployed youths in Himachal Pradesh
The programme included the following stepwise approach:
Step 1 - Candidate Scan: 250 youths from the local area were enlisted in the target group for the proposed Skill Development
Programme.
Step 2 - Market Scan: 244 establishments were surveyed in five towns, namely Shimla, Baddi, Mandi-Sundernagar, Bilaspur, and
Solan. The identified jobs were in sectors of automobile, hospitality, multi-skill technicians, nursing assistant, sales and marketing,
factory and stores helper, machine operators, supervisors, security guards, accountants, construction, etc.
Step 3 - Counseling: Approximately 105 candidates were counseled to better understand issues related to family background,
migration, inclination of candidate, willingness to relocate for training and jobs.
Step 4 - Training and Placement: The first batch of 54 identified youths were imparted 3 months trainings in customer sales, hos-
pitality, multi-skill technician and bed side patient attendants. Of these, 49 youths have been placed with renowned business
establishments in and around Shimla and Chandigarh.
The problem of unemployment is serious in the interior part of Himachal. Majority of the citizens
spend most of their time in activities yielding low productivity and income. Majority of the youth
are unemployable due to lack of suitable training and experience. The objectives are to skill, train
and employ youths for suitable professions and give them experience, so that when the project
begins, they can come back to their local environment with gainful employment. In keeping with
the above principle, a Skilling Rural India and Employability programme was launched in partner-
ship with Dr. Reddys Foundation.
We cannot express our happiness in words. We had never
imagined that we would be able to live our dreams and earn a
livelihood. Now we can support our families. We thank
Lafarge India for taking the initiative and launching this pro-
gramme to enhance our skills.

with students. This has not only increased the students attendance but also enrollment rate has seen a rise by about 20%

a computer in my life and had only heard about it. But after getting enrolled for thiscomputer training course, I feel as if I have entered a new world altogether. He
requested Lafarge India that some additional courses on hardware should also be

EDUCATION
Tribal School, Birsa Prathmik Vidyalaya, Sunderhattu, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
Sunderhattu Bastee; where dawn begins with a search for two square meals. Locals with hardly any life sustaining amenities spend
the day hunting for a meal. The outcome is yet another day with the same everlasting chase for making both ends meet. No drin-
kable water, no medicare, no education and no roads-this was the situation until Jojobera Cement Plant took the mission of
addressing the problems facing the community. Children could be seen either picking up garbage or moving around in the streets
during the day.
As a first intervention, the community constructed a school with Shram Daan with materials provided by Lafarge. Today, the
school is fully aided by Lafarge India with educational kits, books, uniforms, furniture and maintenance of the campus.
The school started in the year 2001 with only 10 students in nursery. Today it has 106 students on its rolls from nursery to std. III.
The 14 students who passed out from Class III in 2009 are now enrolled in other schools and are pursuing their education. The
school focuses on learn with fun teaching methods and has a high student attendance of above 87%
Since the school has been established, she has found
the linkage from Anganwadi to school for the children
of the community. All her children started their educa-
tion from Birsa Prathmik Vidyalaya and after passing
out, are pursuing education in reputed schools. "I bene-
fited personally through this school and my children
received education here. But more importantly, I feel
very happy that all the kids in Anganwadi are linked to
education through their school"she says.

Salma Soren from Sunderban village is an Aganwadi worker. She wanted her children to get proper education from the beginning.
Being from the same village where the school is, she was closely witnessing the quality of education imparted at Birsa Prathmik
Vidyalaya. She had seen the period in Sunderhattu village when the school was not built and being an Anganwadi worker she was
aware of the needs of education but struggled to motivate her parents to send their children to formal schooling, due to their ina-
bility to spend on education and due to the distance of the schools.

upgradation of libraries, construction of school boundary walls, improvement and cleaning of drainage areas, building a passen-
ger waiting area at railway stations, improving roads etc.

Tube Wells and HandpumpsDue to most of the villages facing an acute water shortage,
especially in the coal belt areas. Lafarge India through its foun-
dation NIDHEE has taken up the initiative of installing Hand
Pumps and Tube Wells and maintaining them across most of
the villages around the plant and project sites. Till date 97
Handpumps & Tubewells have been installed across 4 states
impacting approximately 78,385 rural citizens.
Sonamuni Murmur of village Amdanga, Mejia, West Bengal said that earlier she had
to walk a long way to fetch drinking water. Now she does not have to go far. For daily
usage like bathing and washing cloths she had to go 1.5 km away to a pond, which
also dries up during summer. She is now very happy, as Lafarge India has sunk a tube
well near her house.

SeVa: Social Engagement for Voluntary Action
The SEVA programme was organized at Birsa Prathmik Vidyalaya, Sunderhattu. The SEVA Champions invested their time in pain-ting of boundary walls, plantation of decorative species and trees, speaking about basic health habits to the children and develo-
ping children's park area in the school. "Deeper within, I believe that all of us should be individually and socially responsible and
equip our next door neighbours by sharing our resources wherever we can - knowledge, technology, human resource; but above
all, emotional connect, so that at the end of the day its not 'we' and 'them' but 'us'. - Mr. R. T. Warke, Plant Head, Jojobera

environmnt: PlantationPlants are natures most precious gifts that feed us physically as well as aesthetically. Across
Lafarge Indias locations intensive plantation activities are undertaken annually. In
Chhattisgarh, the Arasmeta Cement Team headed by the Plant Manager has planted over
10,000 saplings. Large scale plantation of Bamboo, Gulmohar, Karanj, Bananna, Neem etc. was
carried out during monsoon, as it is the ideal season for it. Initiative taken in this direction
includes creation of house nursery, plantation along the colony and community roads, neem
seed distribution in marshy lands, plantation in barren lands, seed dispersal and sapling planta-
tion in quarry bunds and dry and barren land.

In order to preserve the environment around its Sonadih and Arasmeta sites in a sustainable and responsible way, Lafarge in India
is taking part in a governmental reforestation programme.
Summry
The State of Chhattisgarh has 40% of its area covered in forests. The local authorities have made a commitment to preserve this
unique natural heritage through a large-scale tree-planting programme: the "Green Chhattisgarh" project. Lafarge Indias 2
cement plants in the State supported the project by buying saplings, supervising the planting and maintaining the plots of land.
Lafarge took advice from the Institute of Forest Management (an agency of the Ministry of Environment and Forests) for the
choice of species and from several specialized NGOs for the cultivation of the saplings. The species chosen are robust with a long
expected life span (e.g. teak and tamarind), along with fruit trees (e.g. mango and jackfruit).

20,000 in the area surrounding the Sonadih plant on each side
of the road leading to the plant,
25,000 in the villages neighboring the Arasmeta plant.
The survival rate of the saplings is estimated at 85%.

Scrtry anht Mothr (Shmyit Mth, Wst Bnl)
Shamayita Math, a philanthropic organization, is working in the Gangajalghati Block, in Mejia, West Bengal for the past 15 years
in different spheres like health, education, empowerment, training, etc. Our journey with Lafarge started in May, 2010 with the
execution of Safal Krishak programme in village Nandanpur.
We are implementing several programmes in partnership with Lafarge and the strategy of implemen-
ting the projects was decided through mutual discussion with Shamayita Math and the villagers. This
reveals that Lafarge believes in participatory approach which is key for success in village development
programmes. The objective, vision and sustainability of the project was always given priority during
different sessions of our discussions with the CSR officials of Lafarge who through their village level
visits, motivation of the farmers and communities through participation in meetings assisted us a lot
in finding solutions to several problems that came in our way of implementation.
Last but not the least, the CSR projects of Lafarge are initiatives designed to bring about a change in the lives of the poor by adding
values, not by helping forever but to show the community the path to stand on their own.
