3. Activities

CSIR-OSC have been heavily active this past year, been involve in most of the local

and national events. Our participation during the events, visits and exhibitions had an

overall impact of approximately 5000 scholars, 1000 students, and 4000 general

public, throughout the year. We had different presentation that fit to different

audience, mainly educating about optics, photonics and lasers. In addition, most of

our members were invited to give public lecturers and to be judges for science

expos.

3.1 Invited Public Lecturers

Mr Lebohang Teboho Bell was invited by University of South Africa to give a

public lecturer to celebrate international year of light.

He presented an over view of the basic use of light in out daily basis and also

highlighted how light is use in Photonics and lasers, for applications in our daily

lives.

3.1. National Science week

CSIR Optics Student Chapter (OSC) Outreach: Phumelela Municipality (National

Science Week 2015)

Report made by: Lebohang Teboho Bell

Date: 06-08 August 2015

Event: National Science Week

Duration: 3 days

School Involved: Iphondle Secondary School

Evungwini Secondary School

Intuthuko-Katleho Seconday School

Persons involved: Charles Maphanga (OSC Secretary General)

Lebohang Teboho Bell (OSC President)

Masixole Lengongolo (OSC Member)

Nomvula Dlamuka (Independent Contractor)

General Description of Event

OSC visited schools and community of Phumelela Municipality. The area is made up

of 3 townships that are 60 km apart. The aim was to expose the schools and the

community to science, and different types of research that takes place at the

National Laser Centre.

Role at Event

Charles : Coordinating the event, and responsible for career guidance in science.

Teboho :

Facilitating the event, and giving public lectures about International year of light :

South African inventions.

Masixole : Her main task was to motivate and tell learners a bit about how it is like to

be a women in science.

Nomvula : Due to her Psychology Background, she was mainly involve with helping

learners deal with their career choices on science and preparing their minds to able

to deal with mathematics.

Comments, feedback, etc

The learners were impressed with the laser from PULSE as it was their first time

seeing a laser in action.

It must be also noted that we couldn’t take pictures in a public area due to people

been uncomfortable; we wanted to make our event as friendly as we could.

3.2. National Laser Centre Laboratory visits

In 2015, 4 schools and 3 high education institutes visited our laboratories. Over

300 learners, 100 students, and 10 researchers visited South African National

Laser Centre. Student chapter members played a key role, by showing visitors

around and explaining some of the key projects we are involve in.

3.3. Schools Visited

Our members visited over 10 high schools and 5 primary schools across South

Africa, mainly in Pretoria.

4. Social Event

At the beginning year we had a braai, whereby we were welcoming new students

and we used it as a form of recruiting. As the results we managed to gain 9 students

to our student chapter, including the 3 students from the nearest university

(University of Pretoria).
