CSA Standard B376-M1980 Portable Containers for Gasoline and Other Petroleum

Fuels Scope and Application: This standard applies to portable containers up to and including 5 gallons (25 liters) nominal capacity, made from metal or plastic. Containers covered by this standard are intended for the storage and transportation of petroleum fuels, having a flash point lower than 37.8oC (100o F): excluding containers that are or attached to any objects, single-trip containers in which fuel is prepackaged; and those within the Scope of CSA Standard Z102.15, Steel Drums. The standard provides details on the following elements: General Requirements: • Materials used should be suitable for the intended application, and solder joints

shall not soften at temperatures lower than 350o F; • The body shall be predominantly red; • Container shape; • Closure and gaskets; • There shall be an integral spout; • Pouring vent shall be provided as means of discharging accumulated air; • A handle shall be provided; • Joints shall be of no leakage when tested accordingly; • A corrosion-resistant finish shall be applied; • Container stability; • Flammability of plastic components used, shall not flare up when tested; • Temporary closure. Testing: • Internal pressure test; • Drop strength test; • Penetration resistance test; • Handle strength; • Permeability test; • Flammability test; • Chemical resistance; • Spouts; • Gasket material; and, • Corrosion resistance.

Marking: Each container shall be clearly and permanently marked with:

• The manufacturer’s name or trademark; • The date of manufacture (month and year); • The nominal capacity in gallons; • Model number; • A caution worded as follows: PETROLEUM FUEL- FLAMMABLE-DANGER.

Production Tests:

• Production tests will be monitored as follows: (a) visual examination; (b) mass; (c) internal pressure; (d) drop strength test; (e) thickness of exterior coating-metal containers; (f) wall thickness-plastic containers; and (g) records of production.
