Welcome to the 2019 Crystal Frolics, a fun-fi lled celebration with activities for everyone. Join us for the best “re-union” in the northwest suburbs. The Frolics have moved to Welcome Park while Becker Park is being transformed into a “central park” with an inclusive playground, interactive fountain and performance lawn with a covered stage. The perfect location for a community event.
There will be limited parking in the Welcome neighborhood, so please use our free shuttle service from the Robbin-sdale Middle School, Forest Elementary and Crystal FAIR School parking lots. First Student is supplying the transpor-tation. Check our website and this spe-cial supplement for the schedule .
We will open the Frolics at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, July 25, with an opening dedication ceremony for the new “su-per fi eld” and for the fl agpole donated by the VFW Post 494. We will open with a fl ag ceremony and conclude with the “Star-Spangled Banner.” The ceremony will include introductions of city coun-cil, park commissioners and staff, who spent countless hours in the planning
and implementation of the fi eld, and our button design winners. The soft-ball tournament and polka band will begin immediately after the ceremony. (Yes, we brought in a stage in order to continue our tradition of music each evening.)
A big thank you to Savannah John-son for this year’s Frolics button-win-ning design. She won a $200 gift card donated by the Frolics Committee. The second- and third place design-winners are Skye Brands and Maddy Angulski. Both won gift cards donated by the Crystal Police Association. All three received 10 buttons of their own design.
Friday night and Saturday will bring an amazing infl atable experi-ence brought to us by USA Infl atables. Bouncy houses, slides, bungee jumping and more will be offered 6-9 p.m. Friday evening and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday at Welcome Park. Wristbands will be available Friday for $15 and Saturday for $20, and a two-day wristband will be available for $30. The Euro Bungee costs eight tickets (it’s not included with a wristband). Single tickets are $1. This is an experience for all ages – not just
for children. Please buy a button and register the
number for our fi nal button prize draw-ings donated by local businesses. You will also need a registered button to win the Search for the Crystal Ball $500 prize, donated by Associated Bank.
Our fi reworks are the “Best in the Northwest.” Enjoy the show at 10 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights. The ground show has been described as awesome! So, plan on watching in Wel-come Park to get the best “awe” factor.
Saturday features the 5K at Bassett Creek Park, Baggo and the Firefi ght-ers Waterball Tournament at Welcome Park and the Crystal Cove Season Pass Holders Appreciation Swim.
As always, there will also be bingo and pull-tabs for those who like a game of chance. There is great food and drink available at Welcome Park. Support our local service organizations and have your meals with us.
Join us for the Family Festival on Sunday. The Fest will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We have games and activities with local businesses to enjoy while listening and dancing to Kidsdance. Thanks to
the Friends of Ridgedale Library, we will once again have a free book give-away for kids of all ages.
Except for the $5 pony rides, this festi-val is free, including the walk-in petting zoo from Walton’s Hollow.
Please visit our website: crystalfrolics.org for more information and “Like” us on Facebook. Thank you for support-ing the Crystal Frolics. Have a safe and fun-fi lled weekend.

Festival will return to
Becker Park next year
By RAYMOND T. RIVARD
The Crystal Frolics will make a move to Welcome Park for a single-season stint while Becker Park is reconstructed into a central facility with updated facilities and opportunities for families.
But that doesn’t mean those attending the 2019 iteration of the Frolics will be short-changed.
The softball tournament will still go full throttle, the family festival will con-tinue as in the past and the musical, food and beverage offerings will be as plentiful as years before.
The only part of the Frolics that won’t be available this year is the carnival and the associated games and food.
As the Crystal Frolics Committee planned for this move, it became appar-ent to the committee members that the inclusion of a carnival wouldn’t be pos-sible because of the space needed to ac-commodate the carnival.
The plans for the weekend softball tournament have been tweaked a bit and the games will still be played. While many of the early round games will be played at parks across the area, the community spirit and enthusiasm for the event re-mains strong.
“We worked on [the planning] a long time,” said Lynn Haney, committee pres-ident. “[The construction] made it nec-essary to move the Frolics to Welcome
Park where they played softball anyway, so it was just logical that we would have the rest of the Frolics to the Welcome Park at the same time.”
This year’s event will include infl ata-bles.
“The carnival was the only thing we could not move over there. However, we will have what we are calling the ‘infl at-able experience.’ USA Infl atables will have nine different infl atables there, including bouncy houses and slides. There’s going to be bungee jumping right there, so we will have something on Fri-day evening and Saturday – just not the carnival rides,” she said.
Whether the carnival will be included in future Frolics has not been decided, according to Haney.
“What we’re going to do, sometime this fall, is we want to have a big get-together with the community and having business-es and organizations and just even people in general – interested residents – coming together with the city of Crystal and the Crystal Frolics Committee,” she said. The discussion will include what people want to have in the Frolics, how they can help and what partnerships can be built for a new Crystal Frolics.
“We want to meet the needs of the en-tire community and not just softball. The softball is not going away. That will stay, but it will stay over at Welcome,” she said.
The fi nal decisions on next year and into the future will depend on what the public has to say at the community meet-ings.
One of the things the committee plans to keep going into next year will be the
family festival. “We know we want to keep that. It’s very popular,” Haney said.
This year’s event will feature shuttle buses sponsored by First Student and running from Robbinsdale Middle School, 3731 Toledo Ave. N.; Crystal FAIR, 3915 Adair Ave. N.; and Forest Elementary School, 6800 47th Ave. N.
Parking around the park is very lim-ited, so the addition of shuttles from area
parking lots will provide Frolics-goers with the opportunity to easily get to and from the festivities.
“That will help alleviate parking in the neighborhood and will also make sure that emergency vehicles and the buses get through,” Haney said.
Welcome Park is at 4630 Welcome Ave. N. Get more information at crystalfrolics.org.

Move to Welcome Park
will feature ‘Super Field’
By RAYMOND T. RIVARD
For years, the game of slowpitch softball has been one of the major draws and a focal point for the Crystal Frolics.
The number of players participating in softball around the metro area and the entire nation has been diminish-ing over the past decade and has affected the number of teams in the Frolics’ tournament in recent years.
But the passion for the game remains the same for those who continue to participate, according to Jim Wa-jda, the softball coordinator for the Frolics.
During the high point of participation, which was 1997 or 1998, there were more than 110 teams playing in the Frolics’ tournament

and 74 teams,” Wajda said. “Will we get to 74 this year? I don’t know, with this being the fi rst year at Welcome.”
In spite of losing the two fi elds at Becker Park because of the reconstruc-tion of that facility this summer, the tournament is gearing up for at least 62 to 64 teams this year.
Wajda also expects the tournament to continue to hold its own in the com-ing years, even as the tournament stays based at Welcome Park.
“Up at Welcome [Park] we have three fi elds – the ‘super fi eld,’ Welcome 1 and Welcome 2 – but Welcome 2 is going to be closed down so the concessionaires and a lot of the activities around the Crystal Frolics are going to be held over in that area,” he said.
Wajda described the previous Becker Park fi elds as two of the best in the metro.
“There were two fi elds up at Becker
Park with 300-foot fences. They were beautiful fi elds,” he said. “Back in the heyday, they were fantastic fi elds. At one time, the Becker fi elds and the city of Crystal were used ... four nights a week. But with the decline of teams that play softball on a regular basis now ... it just became a fact that Becker Park was used, what, once or twice a year for softball?”
That’s when it became apparent to the city offi cials that a redo of that park was necessary.
“I understand that,” Wajda said. “But Becker was a great place to play. There was an atmosphere there and hopefully, we’ll be able to transfer that to Welcome Park. It will be interesting to see how people respond to everything over there. We’re looking forward to that.”
The success of the softball tourna-ment has also been demonstrated by the number of teams and by where those teams come from to participate.
“Basically, we’ve had teams from Atlanta, we’ve had some come in from Denver, We’ve also got a reunion team coming up here from Chicago – but the team has got a guy coming from Flor-ida, another from Texas and another
from New Mexico. But Frolics takes teams from all over the state, as well as Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Da-kota and Iowa.”
The local effect of the tournament is even more important for organizers.
“I think what the Frolics does is it allows the neighborhood teams – I’m talking about the guys that go to high schools around the area to come togeth-er and play,” he said.
Next year, when the bulk of the festiv-ities move back to Becker Park, “we will have all three fi elds over at Welcome and that’ll be a little bit easier to handle,” he added.
The exact number of teams and the schedule hadn’t been set by press time. After the deadline of July 19, Wajda said he will have a better idea on the number of teams.
Teams will once again play on fi elds scattered across the city.
“We’re also going to be using Lions Valley Place Park, and a couple of fi elds over in Brooklyn Center. So up until last year, we reciprocated – when we would take teams from the Dudley tournament that Brooklyn Center puts
on, they would come over and play over at Becker. But since Becker is gone, they have gone a different route.”
The dedication of the new “super fi eld” will be Thursday, July 25, with the showing of the colors, the national anthem and speeches by public offi cials. The fi eld was constructed this past year at a cost of around $600,000.
“It’s 315 down the line, 325 to center, it has LED lighting, dugouts, and beau-tiful fenced fi eld over there. I checked with the maintenance department and the grass is coming in there and it’s look-ing very, very positive. We’re defi nitely looking forward to having that fi eld available to play,” Wajda said.
That will be followed by the annual home run contest.
“We’re setting up the home run con-test for around 8:30 that night, which lets local ballplayers come up there and try their hand at that.”
With the close of Becker Park to soft-ball, Wajda said he kept hearing that Frolics softball “was dead.”
He has a different take.“Frolics softball is not dead, it’s been
basically reinvented,” he said.
