When it comes to pumping water, moving air, or general machinery applications, we are presented with an opportunity to optimise our energy consumption and make a contribution to the reduction of global warming.

Research has found that 40% of all energy used is electrical, with a staggering 50% of this used by electric motors.

AC drive technology can helpStudies have shown we can significantly reduce energy consumption by enhancing the performance of a motor with AC drive technology. The level of energy savings that can be obtained depends on the application, but is typically in the 10-20% range. In some cases the savings can be as high as 60-70%.

Not only running costs, but starting currents are reduced. This saves on peak demand charges and eliminates energy peaks. Power factor is also close to unity, so no additional power factor correction equipment is needed.

CMG’s knowledge and experience with AC drives extends to many industrial sectors.Vacon drives are used in a host of applications utilising the various software solutions available. Below are just a few examples where CMG’s expertise is being put to good use.

Building Automation solutionsToday’s buildings are sophisticated environments with demanding requirements for comfort and control. A typical office building houses hundreds of pumps and fans controlling the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning. Together with high energy efficiency demands, this leads to a need for advanced control features and high reliability.

HVAC and Firemode

With the proven ability to substantially improve the quality and efficiency of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning of a building, Vacon drives were selected for the $204 million Britomart Transport Centre project in New Zealand.

Providing a central connection point for bus, ferry and rail services in Auckland CBD, the project placed safety above all else. CMG supplied 24 variable speed drives to control the all important ventilation system. Fire control was an important consideration and the drives were an ideal choice as they easily accommodate true firemode operation.

Materials Handling solutionsWith factors such as increased fuel costs and energy consumption, there has been a shift to more innovative approaches to materials handling. Vacon drives guarantee a cost effective, energy efficient solution.

Conveyors

Winner of Australian Bulk Handling Award for Transport & Conveying Technology, the Wambo Coal train project’s underground conveyor transport system used CMG products as the “back-bone” of the project.

The engineers were looking for a product to provide high power and smooth control with high starting torque. The ability of Vacon drives to operate effortlessly under extreme conditions contributed greatly to the success of the design.

Lift and Crane

Lifting requires smooth, reliable and safe control. That’s why the high performance NXP drive with encoder feedback is commonly used. CMG offers tailored software for cranes and regenerative braking, and have seen similar success with permanent magnet motors.

Water solutionsVacon water solutions can help you save energy, improve your processes and protect the environment by enabling stepless speed control of pumps, mixers, blowers and chemical dosing in an optimum way.

Pump set with Multimaster

Yarra Valley Water wanted a simple to run pump set with minimal equipment. CMG met this challenge, commissioning the Multimaster system. With simple user controls, the drive’s internal logic controls all aspects of the pump set including auto-rotate and pump and motor protections, and eliminates the need for any additional controller.

Advanced level control for sewage pit

Reducing maintenance and stress on pumps, smoothing out-flow surges and eliminating peak starting currents were all concerns for SA Water. With Vacon’s Level Control application, CMG were able to allay each issue. In addition, CMG saved on equipment costs with the two drives utilising Advanced Level Control logic and avoiding the need for an external controller.

Marine solutionsIn the highly competitive marine sector, increased demand for efficiency is the main reason for using AC drives in fan, winch, propeller, and various special applications. This is equally true of all vessel types, from large luxury liners and cargo ships to small work boats.

OEM solutionsCMG products guarantee improved performance. You can easily adapt a Vacon drive to OEM requirements and CMG provides product specific support for joint product development.

Concrete grinding and polishing machine

Operating in harsh conditions with vibration and dust, two drives were used in each concrete grinding and polishing machine. Not only chosen for their robust design, application such as this demand high torque right through the speed range, and Vacon drives deliver.

Mining and Metal solutionsIn heavy industrial applications, only well engineered and robust equipment will survive. CMG’s expertise has been utilised time and again in these types of applications.

Vacon drives are reliable, integrate easily into existing control systems, and provide trouble free operation. CMG customer applications have included demanding systems like ball mills at gold mines and high pressure grinding roller presses (where two synchronized drives were utilized).

The Vacon NXL Light is a powerful and compact AC drive. As the name suggests, it is well suited to general light industrial purposes from 0.75 to 30 kW.

The space-saving bookshelf design with high protection classes, versatile control, and programming capabilities offer an optimal solution for all light industrial operating environments.

Installation, connection and commissioning procedures are quick and convenient with instructions attached to the unit.

ApplicationsWith Modbus on board as standard and thermistor input available, this drive is a particularly popular choice for the building services industry.

The NXL Light is also the perfect choice for other installations where advanced drive control features aren’t necessary. They can even be used for basic pump control installations and heavy duty applications where only simple I/O are needed.

Features and benefitsThanks to an extremely effective design, everything is included as standard. The units can be installed on the wall without additional cabinets because of its high protection classes (both IP21 and IP54 are available).

With integrated RFI Filters and AC Chokes the drives are ready for immediate integration into the network.

The NXL Light includes one easy-to-use and flexible multi-control application. The need for parameter adjustments is kept to a minimum, thanks to well defined default settings.

Typical programming requires four steps only. The start-up wizard can be activated by pressing the “Stop” button for 5 seconds when the NXL Light is stopped.

The NXP Performance is designed for any application where robustness, dynamic performance, precision, and power are required.

The quality and reliability of a machine or process is in most cases the result of precise and dynamic control of AC motors. The NXP Performance has been designed to provide the best possible control under all circumstances and ensures high operational quality and availability for the entire lifetime of a system.

ApplicationsThe NXP Performance stands out from the crowd for high power applications, encoder feedback operation such as cranes and hoists, drive-drive communications, controls induction, and permanent magnet motors.

Tailored software application packages make their mark in demanding automation applications for paper machines, metal industry, and processing lines. Packages include position control, shaft synchronisation and load sharing.

Features and benefitsWith a high speed processor, and encoder feedback options, the NXP Performance provides speed control accuracy with only 0.01% error and dynamic speed control of 0.2%. The Vacon NXC Cabinet is a space saving, well tested drive, which fully utilises the flexibility of the NXP drive for applications up to 2MW.

The NXC Cabinet is designed to meet the most demanding requirements on flexibility, robustness, compactness and service-friendliness.

ApplicationsThe NXC Cabinet is a safe choice for any large kW application, providing a well engineered cabinet solution to achieve IP21 or IP54. Common options, such as fuses, make life easy when it comes to installing and protecting the drive.

Features and benefitsThe NXC Cabinet incorporates both frequency converter and optional items including mains switch, contactor, control options as well as output filtering in one compact unit which is easy to install and service.

In the NXC Cabinet, the control unit is mounted in a separate compartment at an easily accessible height together with all control options. Ample space around the power terminals allows easy installation and connection of power cables. For 360 degree earthing of motor cable shields, bottom plates and earthing clamps are provided as standard.

The NXC Cabinet drive was developed by Vacon experts with more than 20 years of experience in enclosure design. The design is a well tested, proven solution.

The good thermal handling of the enclosure guarantees a long lifetime for the frequency converter and trouble-free operation in the most demanding environments. Approved EMC solutions ensure reliable operation of the frequency converter without disturbing other electrical equipment.

Incorporating the NXP Performance modulesNXC Cabinet enclosures are designed to fully utilise the new and innovative installation of the high power Vacon NXP Performance modules. PC tools

The Vacon10 supports Vacon’s existing software. The tools are intended for commissioning, monitoring and loading applications. The PC is connected using a Micro Communication Adapter (MCA) and a standard USB cable. There is even a special adapter which can upload and download parameters without having to power the drive!

Vacon10 offers the ultimate in adaptability. Integrating customer requirements into the AC drive, it is one of the smallest drives on the market today.

HarmonicsAdvanced Systems – Harmonics reduction at its best

CMG offer an extensive choice of solutions for harmonics reduction and regenerative applications.

Our services extend to helping you estimate what harmonic distortion is likely, and selecting the optimum solution for your application.

The suite of harmonics solutions available includes Passive filters, Active filters, 12 pulse & 18 pulse drives, and Active Front End drives.

12 and 18-Pulse drivesThe Vacon drive range provides 12-pulse drives from 385A. 18-pulse drives are available from 820A. Speak to your local CMG office for more information.

î The 5th, 7th, 17th and 19th harmonics are cancelled in the transformer

î Current distortion THDI = 10%.

Active Front End and Regenerative SolutionVacon’s unique Active Front End (AFE) drives solution minimises harmonics down to 4% by tuning out specific harmonics. Coupled with our regenerative filter, the cleanest power can be fed back to the supply in braking situations.

This range includes front-end units, inverter units and brake chopper units. Not only that, but with our unique AFE technology we can help correct power factor caused by connected equipment!

î The passive rectifier is replaced with an Active rectifier

î The active rectifier generates a sinusoidal input current

Passive FiltersWhen the harmonics reduction provided by an integral AC Choke still isn’t enough, a passive filter can be applied. Our passive harmonic filters solve the problem of harmonics on six pulse rectifiers and are guaranteed to meet minimum distortion levels all the way from no load to full load. These provide harmonics levels down to 5%, and filters are available in 415V and 690V, IP00 and IP23.

Capacitors may be switched out when not in operation to avoid a leading power factor, and thermal protection is provided. Please ask your local CMG office for more information on the advantages of passive filters.

Active Filters – Controlled and selective neutralization of harmonicsThink of quality noise cancelling headsets, and you’ll be dreaming of the crisp clean waveform that active filters can provide. These filters actively create a voltage which cancels out distortion frequencies and can be specifically tuned for problematic harmonics.

They are conveniently placed in parallel, and hence can be used to treat many drives at once without taking the risk of the drive power relying on the filter being operational.

ToolsUser interface & tools – first class usability

Commissioning and fine-tuning is made simple with the easy built-in start-up wizard.

Plus the well-defined menu structure and easy to use functions ensure hassle-free operation.

As many as three different monitoring values can be displayed on the keypad display simultaneously. We can even convert to show actual value display, eg; kPa, ºC and l/s.

A number of software programs are available to make using a Vacon NX drive as easy and convenient as possible. The software is intended for tasks such as commissioning, loading of various applications, and block programming.

Built-in help is available across all software. Additional PC tools are freely available for download from www.vacon.com.

Built in software applications – software modularityThe All-in-One application package has seven applications which can be selected with one parameter. (The start-up wizard will prompt for the applications at the first power-up.) With this single setting, the controls can be easily programmed.

These re-configured software applications are perfectly suited for controlling the drive for practical applications such as pumps, fans, blowers, compressors, conveyors, winders, mixers, cranes, hoists, winches, elevators and crushers.

We offer a wide range of customized special applications, including a Water Solutions Package (for multiple pump flow control, irrigation and level control), Lift, Winder, High-speed, Torque control, and Permanent Magnet motors.

NXP Application PackageAs an alternative to the default All-In-One application package, the Vacon NXP can also be equipped with the NXP Application Package. It is designed to meet the requirements in demanding automation applications requiring coordinated drives like paper machines, the metal industry, and processing lines.

The package also includes:

î Position Control Application (for single-axis position interpolating control)

î Shaft Synchronization Application (for relative position control between a master and follower axis).

SelectionDrive selection is simple. Based on the current required by the motors, the degree of overloadability, and the ambient temperature, the correct drive can be chosen. Our selection options cover both variable torque applications (low overload) and constant torque applications (high overload). The constant torque selection is already rated for 50°C continuous without de-rating.
