MAINEPORT Cold Pipe Supports

Cryogenic Pipe

Insulation Materials MAINEPORT standard cold supports incorporate ‘Permali’ insulation materials. Permali have over 50 years experience in the manufacture of natural and man made materials for industry, and are part of the BTR Group. The intrinsic properties of laminate materials offer a range of insulating products with proven engineering capabilities. In the early 1960’s a replacement for natural timbers was needed. Increased loads and thermal fractures were causing problems and with the advent of large bore insulated pipework there was an urgent need to improve the bearing and thermal properties of the support structures. At that time, and until the present day, the Phenolic wood laminate called Permali fulfilled the requirements for most general applications. For the more arduous conditions where better cryogenic properties and a higher flexural and impact strength were required at temperatures down to 4°K, a unique type of composite laminate called Permaglass X was developed. This material has been in service since its development in 1968 on many applications world-wide.

Product Development To meet today’s increasing sophistication of plant and pipelines with the need to improve the fire and thermal resistance of all materials, a number of glass reinforced insulation laminates have been developed. Permaglass laminates meet the criteria needed to provide support and insulation that meet the exacting standards set by the industry and offers a specification tailored to satisfy BS476 Parts 5-7.

Grades of Insulation UNITHERM 1000®

This is a phenolic/glass composite laminate which may be used as a standard load bearing insulation material on all cryogenic pipe supports.

Densified wood Established insulation material which offers unusual scope to pipework designers in that its maximum mechanical strength can be developed in any direction to suit specific applications.

Page 25: cryogenic welding

25

Advantages of UNITHERM 1000®

Cryogenic Pipe

Supports

The combination of extremely low thermal conductivity, high mechanical strength, water resistance and excellent fire/smoke performance makes UNITHERM 1000 unique and superior to other products presently available. For example, a “K” value below 0.13W/mC, a compressive strength of more than 240 Mpa, a fire performance rating of class 1 to BS476 pt7, a smoke generation in the event of fire of only 55% mean to BS5111. See full technical data on page 34. UNITHERM 1000 is easily machined to engineering tolerances and where required the material can be screw threaded for simplified assembly. UNITHERM 1000 is impervious to most solvents, is dimentionally stable and being phenolic based offers full fire protection plus exceptionally low smoke and toxicity properties. At cryogenic temperatures the material shows an increase in mechanical and thermal performance. The high compressive strength properties enable a design to optimize conductivity and mechanical properties whilst minimising material content and costs. All insulation materials are produced under the quailty control of EN ISO 9001: 1994 with full design and material technology support available.

Ordering Information Specify the material, insulation thickness and corrosion protection required for pipe support. Stipulate the type of unit including any additional requirements such as site fixing holes or PTFE. Order all supports by type and quantity for standard units, none standard dimensions should be amended to suit clients specific requirements.

Installation Cold pipe supports may be clamped, welded, banded or bolted directly to the pipe or supporting steel. NB see appropriate support type for site fixing dimensions if required.

PFTE Slider Assemblies

Cryogenic Pipe

Supports

PTFE Slider Assemblies provide a simple and cost-effective solution to engineering problems where movement has to be accommodated. Current applications include piping systems, structures and containments subject to thermal, seismic, static and dynamic forces which include low-velocity relative movement of components. Assemblies can incorporate insulation, damping and other barrier materials to further improve the performance of the bearings in specific applications.

About PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene offers the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. It is highly chemical-resistant and has no ‘stick-slip’ action, giving a very cost-effective solution for bearing applications with no maintenance costs and virtually indefinite life over a temperature range of minus 30 to plus 200°C.

Advantages of PTFE Bearings Cost-effective solution High bearing loads Temperature resistance Electrical and Thermal Insulation Dirt absorbtion Corrosion free Simple and rapid installation Lubrication and maintenance-free operation Vibration damping characteristics MAINEPORT PTFE Slider Assemblies incorporate our wide experience in the manufacture, supply and construction of piping systems, steel structures and pressure vessels. They are designed and manufactured in-house at our own fabrication facility - your assurance of quality, innovation and excellence.

Design Guidance Notes

Cryogenic Pipe

Supports

General The pupose of the bearing assembly is to permit relative movement between engineering components inducted by the various forces to which the components are subjected. There may also be contractual interface between components and therefore it is essential that the design considerations are co-ordinated in a systematic manner, for example in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001. To select the appropriate PTFE Slider Assembly you require the following design data: Loads Movements Mating component dimensions and materials Dimensional constraints

Temperature The normal design range is minus 30 to plus 120°C; temperatures up to 200°C continuous can be accommodated by using special bonding agents and techniques. If your design temperatures are outside this range, specify thermal insulation barrier materials (we will advise you on specific applications) to ‘sandwich’ between mating components and the PTFE bearing.

Friction The friction coefficient of PTFE is dependant on the bearing pressure as shown in Chart No. 2 overleaf. The surface roughness, relative velocity and temperature will also influence friction coefficient, however for optimum results high bearing pressures are recommended as shown in Chart No. 1. The charts describe the performance of plain PTFE which we recommend and incorporate in our standard units on both upper and lower surfaces. If dimentional constraints require that a smaller unit be specified (i.e. with a higher bearing pressure) then glass-filled PTFE or a polished stainless steel upper plate can be used - we will advise you on specific applications. Generally, the support of heavy loads over small areas should be avoided.

Table (ii) Bearing Area (cm²)

Selection Determine optimum bearing pressure, (see section on design considerations) and load to be carried. Divide load by bearing pressure to give bearing area required (check units: above table is in cm2). Select appropriate size of bottom plate (length x width) from the above table taking into account dimensions of mating structural elements. Size top plate by adding movement required in each plane. Specify each plate separately as shown in the example.

Page 41: cryogenic welding

41

Example

Cryogenic Pipe

Supports

Optimum bearing pressure = 60kg/cm2 Load = 13360 kg, therefore area required = 13360 --: 60 = 222.6 cm2 Therefore we could use the following sizes (from table II) 500 x 100 (LxW) 300 x 150 200 x 200 Mating structural elements is (say) 300 x 300 column base Therefore use 200 x 200 unit

Top Plate Movement required is 100 longitudinal, zero lateral Therefore Top Plate = (200 + 100) x 200 = 300 x 200 unit i.e. PC30 W = 200 Note: The mating strucrural element must be at least as large as the backing plate and sufficient to carry the load. If not, a more substantial backing plate can be supplied; consult our Engineering Department. Bearings with anti-vibration pads and hot or cold insulation materials are also available to special order (please refer to MAINEPORT Insulated Pipe Support catalogue).

Designing your own unit

Cryogenic Pipe

Supports

First calculate the bearing area: Divide your known load by the recommended bearing pressure.NB: If you are supporting a large component you can use a number of smaller bearings spaced to provide adequate and distributed support. Determine the bearing dimensions you require from the bearing area and component dimensions. The upper plate is sized larger than the lower plate by the amount of movement you require in each direction. Allow 25mm all round from the edge of the backing plate to the PTFE pad.

Example

Horizontal pressure vessel Vessel weighs 50 Tonnes Operating Temp is 100°C Vessel is supported by two saddles 300mm wide . . load on each saddle is 25000 kg Movement required is 100mm along length of vessel From chart No. 1 Maximum Bearing Pressure is 40 kg/cm2 . .Minimun Bearing Area = (25000 --: 40) = 625 cm2 Maximum width of top slider plate is 300 - (2 x 25) = 250 . . Minimum width of bottom slider plate is 250 - 100 = 150 . . length of slider plate is (625 --: 15) = 41.67cm Maximum size of slider plates are as follows:- Top 250mm x 420 in one piece or 250mm x 210 in two pieces Bottom 150mm x 420 in one piece or 150mm x 210 in two pieces

Installation and Maintenance

Cryogenic Pipe

Supports

Installation of MAINEPORT standard units could not be simpler. Ensure that PTFE faces are parallel and bearing over the whole surface. Tack weld in position at each corner, re-check position before fillet welding each corner only. Use a suitable 3.25mm stainless steel electrode e.g. BS2926 Class 23.12. LAR for welding to carbon steel and weld 25mm around each corner. NB. Protect the PTFE from weld spatter. For mechanical fixing MAINEPORT recommend countersunk stainless steel screws; we do not recommend adhesives for site application. MAINEPORT standard backing plates are made from 3mm thick Grade 304 stainless steel: we do not recommend the use of carbon steel, due to potential corrosion problems; the carbon steel cannot be galvanised as the PTFE will not bond to this type of surface. If the carbon steel is painted then the plates are inaccessible for repainting after installation and welding. The use of thinner stainless steel backing plates, or polished stainless steel upper bearing plates can lead to distortion during installation and ‘pick-up’ during operation. MAINEPORT units do not normally require dust seals or lubrication and are maintenance free.
