As a final check, the customershould conduct a personal inspectionat delivery to verify that the correctproduct and the expected quantity isreceived. Pipe corrugations, gaskets,pipe ends, couplers or other joints, andany accessories should be visually in-spected for damage that may haveoccurred during shipment.

Product Identification

Product markings on Crumpler Plas-tic Pipe will include the following infor-mation to facilitate jobsite inspection.

The Contractor should set aside an areafor products to be stored on site. This area

should be flat, free of large rocks, roughsurfaces and debris. It should also be out

uct. Pallets may be unloaded with a back-hoe, forklift or other piece of equipment anda nylon sling or cushioned cable. The sling

should be wrapped around the pallet at thethird points as it lifts the pallet onto theground. As an alternative to using a sling

to unload full pallets, the pallet may beopened and lengths of pipe unloaded indi-vidually by carefully rolling single lengths

of loose pipe from the delivery truck ontothe front end loader, then onto the ground.Alternately, the pipe can also be lifted us-

ing a nylon sling or cushioned cable at thethird points.

Reasonable care should be used in han-dling pipe. The pipe should not bedropped, dragged or bumped againstother pipe or objects. Palletized pipeshould remain in the pallet for jobsite stor-age. Non-palletized pipe can be stock-piled for temporary storage in a flat de-bris-free area out of the way of construc-tion traffic. Begin the stockpile with se-cured timbers spaced the width of the pro-posed stockpile at a distance not exceed-ing the third points. For pipe with attachedbells, a recommended stacking methodis to alternate the direction of the pipelengths so that the bells are not stackedon each other. As shown in Figure 2, upto three pipes can be laid before alternat-ing directions. Subsequent layers shouldfollow the same pattern as the first butwith fewer sticks of pipe in each row. Forsmooth interior pipe, storage space canbe minimized by nesting smaller diam-eters into larger diameter pipe. Factoryinstalled gaskets on the spigot should beprotected by positioning them betweencorrugations.

Stringing the Pipe

Placing the pipe and accessories along theopen trench, or “stringing,” can save han-dling time. Each pipe length should be laidon a level surface as near as possible tothe trench on the side opposite the exca-vated trench material; allow some spacebetween pipe to protect pipe ends. The pipeshould be out of the way of any equipmentin a location that will allow excavation toproceed uninterrupted.

High Density Polyethylene plastic culvert pipe has been in use on privatefarm roads now for over 30 years. From 1989 forward a number of stateshave approved it for drive way culvert and catch basin slope drain pipes ormedian drains. Pipes used on public roads are to be installed per AASHTOstandards, and should be CPP’S DUAL-WALL CORRUGATED withSMOOTH INTERIOR LINER.

Both CPP SINGLE-WALL corrugated and CPP DUAL-WALL SMOOTHCORE corrugated meet the same AASHTO-M-294 pipe standard. The twostyles are differentiated by the addition of the two letters “SW” and “SC” tothe end of the AASHTO-M-294 Spec. The SW indicates SINGLE-WALLand the SC indicates SMOOTH-CORE. Corrugated plastic pipes have beenburied as shallow as 12 inches and as deep as 104 feet in highway liveload situations.

STATE ROAD CULVERT PIPE

Compact bedding and the envelope zone in layers to elimi-nate soft spots that can cause shifting. Compact fully to firmtrench wall on each side to assure total firm support.

To meet AASHTO live load H-20 (32,000 lbs. per axle) culvert burial standards, CPP pipes should be buried in a LOADBEARING ENVELOPE of crushedstone, COMPACTED sand or a COMPACTED dry CLASS III soil. If stone is used, 95% Standard Proctor Density COMPACTION can be attained upondumping and hand leveling. However, if Sand or Class III soils are used, the ENVELOPE MATERIAL should be FEATHER DUMPED in 6” layers for sand,and 3” layers for Class III Soil. This is especially important on the sides and the bottom 180 degrees of the pipe. Each layer should be compacted fully tothe undisturbed side wall of the trench to prevent side shifting of the SOIL-PIPE profile. A compacted foundation bed of 6” below the pipe trench grade isalso needed for good longitudinal support to prevent sagging reverse grades, and to provide a good foundation at coupling junctions.

To protect CPP pipes from H-25/H-30 construction loads prior to paving, a MOUNDING RAMP of 2 feet of compacted soil over the pipe should be utilized.The MOUNDING RAMP should extend to each side of the pipe for a distance of 11⁄2 times the diameter of the pipe. This precaution should be taken at allconstruction cross-over sites.

This installation outline is only an introductory guide. The actual installation requirements can vary from site to site and state to state depending on localsoil conditions. Many states will allow the use of CPP pipes for Culvert or slope drains under 12” of COMPACTED soil cover; others may require 18” ofCOMPACTED soil cover to accommodate washboard rutting. Local public road officials should be contacted prior to purchase and installation. It shouldalso be noted that the installation of any pipe in areas of expected significant re-settlement loadings, such as Dams, Trenches near building Foundations,Retaining Walls, Sanitary Landfills, Trenches over 20 feet deep or Highly unstable soils require site-specific, special Engineering that is beyond the scopeof general installation practices. OSHA Regulations, likewise, DEMAND a site-specific Engineer’s design for all trenches 20 feet or deeper, regardless ofa pipe’s raw material base.
