70’s classic ‘Baked Alaska’ is experiencing a bit of a revival, and is a staple dessert on many a cruise ship menu. But if you can’t wait until your next holiday, here is an easy recipe that you can try at home to get a taste of the high life:

You will need:20cm/8in round cake tin A flat baking tray1 litre pudding basin (20cm/8in diameter)

Ingredients:Chocolate cake base1 litre vanilla or chocolate ice cream50g chocolate, broken into pieces130g softened butter125g caster sugar2 free-range eggs125g self-raising flour

Meringue3 free-range egg whites200g caster sugarPinch cream of tartar

For the chocolate sauce200ml double cream200g dark chocolate1–2 tbsp rum or brandy (optional)

Method• For the base, line the pudding basin

with two layers of cling film, leaving enough hanging over the edge to cover the sides of the basin.

• Place the ice cream in the basin and press down to get a smooth surface

• Cover the top with the cling film and return it to the freezer.

• Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4, butter the sides of the cake tin and line the base with baking parchment.

• Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Set aside.

• In a large bowl cream the butter until soft. Add the sugar and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, beating all the time.

• Beat in the melted chocolate, then gently fold in the flour until combined.

• Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin and bake for 25-30 mins

• Remove the cake from the oven and turn the temperature up to 220C/425F/Gas 7

• Allow the cake to cool down in the tin for 10 minutes then place on a wire rack to cool down fully.

• For the meringue, in a large bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks when the whisk is removed.

• Add half of the caster sugar and the cream of tartar and whisk until stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed and the meringue is satiny and glossy. Fold in the remaining sugar with a metal spoon or spatula.

• For the chocolate sauce, place the cream in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Add the chocolate and stir until just melted, then add the brandy (if using).

• Set aside until ready to serve.

• To assemble, once the cake has cooled, place it in the middle of a flat baking tray.

• Take the ice cream out of the freezer. With the help of the cling film, remove the ice cream from the pudding bowl and place it upside down on the cake.

• Quickly spoon over the meringue, spreading it thickly and in peaks over the ice cream and the sides of the cake right down to the baking tray.

• Place in the centre of the hot oven for 3-4 minutes or until the meringue is set on the outside and golden in colour.

• Serve immediately with the chocolate sauce.

UK welcomes back Norwegian Jade

Fans of Norwegian Cruise Line will be looking forward to May 2017 when Norwegian Jade starts sailing from Southampton after a six year absence from the cruise line. The 2,402-passenger ship will be totally refurbished and will sail seven-night Northern Europe cruises to Holland, Belgium and France, nine-night Norwegian Fjords and north Norway trips, as well as four-night mini-cruises to Hamburg.

Boost for Solo Travellers

Holland America Line’s new ship Koningsdam, launched in May this year, has added 12 single cabins in a bid to attract more single passengers. Cunard meanwhile, has also added 15 single staterooms as part of the Queen Mary 2 refurbishments; while boutique river cruise line Uniworld has waived its single supplement on several European 2016 cruises including the Enchanting Danube departing July 31, August 28 and November 6.

Get Active on an Avalon river cruise

to engage in activities such as canoeing, hiking and biking. The nine day voyage, launching next year, will also include the chance to explore ice caves and learn to waltz!

Anyone for Sushi?

Celebrity Cruises has taken the bold move of replacing its popular French café ‘Bistro on Five’ with ‘Sushi on Five’ – an authentic, casual, à-la-carte sushi restaurant which serves lunch and dinner with no cover charge. Freshly prepared items include the fi nest sashimi, hand-rolled sushi, and other Japanese favourites. The menu is created by Yoshikazu Okada, a fourth-generation sushi chef and has already been tested on board Celebrity Refl ection and Millennium. The restaurant will be rolled out across the rest of the fl eet throughout the remainder of 2016.

More ships on the horizon forRoyal Caribbean Cruises

The third largest of the world’s oceans, the Indian Ocean marks the centre of a veritable melting pot of cultures, colours, food, people and places teeming with ancient traditions, vibrant modern metropolises, colonial history and stunning landscapes.

With a destination for everyone, a cruise to this part of the world is sure to satisfy those yearning for exotic lands, breath-taking sites and insights into days gone by.

IndianThe exotic delights of the

Sri LankaStunning Sri Lanka is the perfect introduction to the Sub Indian continent. An island ruled by the sea, it offers palm-fringed beaches sheltering exotic rainforests, ancientrelics and colonial towns. Its capital Colombo was once known as the ‘garden of the east’ and its rich history makes it a diverse and fascinating city to visit.Galle, in the south of the island, is home to one of Sri Lanka’s best preserved colonial towns, the ‘Fort’

Ocean

– the old Dutch quarter lying at the heart of the city. While the lively beach resort of Welligama, lies 30 kms east of Galle and is famous for its stilt fishermen, as featured on our front cover.

• Noble Caledona’s ‘Sri Lanka to the Seychelles’ voyage takes place over Christmas 2016 and calls into Galle, before heading to the Maldives and then onto the Seyschelles. Departs 22nd December 2016.

Cruisin’ Magazine 5

MadagascarPropelled into the limelight by the 2005 DreamWorks® film of the same name, Madagascar is famous for its vast array of flora and fauna; some of the planet’s rarest and most diverse creatures can be found here including over 100 species of lemur, 300 species of bird and over 250 species of amphibians, mostly frogs. A cruise to Madagascar will afford you time to not only experience the jungles of this huge island, but also its striking blue waters, incredible beaches and local cuisine. The strangely-named port town of Hell-Ville on Nosy Be island couldn’t be further from the visions its name suggests – witness pristine beaches, explore coral reefs, and visit its nature reserves for a true taste of the exotic.

• Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ sailing to the ‘Med, Zanzibar & Mauritius’ calls into Toamasina, Madagascar – the perfect place to visit for a typically Madagascan experience. Departs 14th October 2017.

SeyschellesYour first view of the Seychelles will most likely be the stunning Port Victoria on Mahe, with a backdrop of mighty mountains and some of the bluest waters you will ever see. Mahe is the largest of the 115 island archipelago, with plenty to explore including the Botanical Gardens, cathedral and Government House. Its neighbour Praslin Island is the second largest and boasts an infectious laid-back ambience that quickly engulfs its visitors. Here, you can explore the UNESCO listed Vallee de Mai Nature Reserve – one of only two places in the world where the rare ‘coco de mer’ palm grows naturally.

• Voyages of Discovery’s 15 day ‘South Africa, Wonders & Wildlife’ takes in the tropical luxury of Mauritius as well as Port D’Ehola in Madagascar and spectacular Reunion Island. Departs 18th March 2017.

MumbaiThe glamourous home of ‘Bollywood’, Mumbai takes its name from the Goddess Mumba –guardian of the city and the personification of Mother Earth. Originally a string of seven islands, the current landscape of

Mumbai was formed between 1782 and the early 1990s when the British reclaimed the land and connected the islands together. Now known as the Gateway to India, this vibrant city is simply bursting at the seams – some might say an assault on all the senses yet a rite of passage for those seeking to immerse themselves into modern India. With many Indian Ocean cruises departing from Mumbai, it is the perfect destination to arrange a pre-cruise stay so that you can take in all that it has to offer at your leisure.

• Azamara Club Cruises’ sensational 20 night ‘Seychelles & Maldives’ voyage departs from Mumbai and includes over three days and three different islands in the Seychelles. Departs 22nd April 2017.

Nearby Ross Island can be reached by ferry in just a few minutes from the marine park. This picturesque island was once used as headquarters by the British, and for obvious reasons.

• Seabourn’s 33 day Arabia, India & Orchid Isles sailing takes in fascinating destinations including Port Blair, Cochin, Mangalore and Colombo. Departs 5th December 2016.

MauritiusInhabited by Dutch settlers in 1635, the formally uninhabited colony of Mauritius promises its visitors endless views of blue seas, white sandy beaches and plenty of sunshine. From its capital Port Louis, head south towards the striking Trou aux Cerfs crater, formed by a dormant volcano and the Grand Bassin.

Legend says that the water in the Bassin is connected to the Ganges in India, making it a pilgrimage site for Mauritian Hindus. In Port Louis itself you can experience an intoxicating mix of cultures including African, Indian, Oriental and European. Hunt for bargains at the heritage-protected central market or sample some of the local snacks on offer at its street stalls.

• Cunard’s ‘Singapore to Cape Town’ 20 night voyage visits Sri Lanka, the Seychelles and Mauritius en route to South Africa. Departs 31st March 2017.

Andaman IslandsThis tiny archipelago is comprised of no less than 572 islands including South Andaman Island, home to the capital Port Blair – a charming Indian town surrounded by mangrove forests. As a former penal colony, one of its main ‘attractions’ is the Cellular Jail – a former colonial prison, (now a memorial) which was home to exiled political prisoners during the struggle for India’s independence. You could also explore the 280 square kilometres of the Mahatma Ghandi Marine National Park by kayak or glass bottom boat; about half an hour away from Port Blair.

The link between the health of the rainforest and the health of the planet as a whole is undisputed and it is a rare privilege to bear witness to the extraordinary sights and sounds that can be found here. A cruise to this part of the world will enable you to immerse yourself into the exotic wildlife, cultures and people of the rainforest. Your ship will take you to Amazonian cities such as Boca do Valeria and Manaus; the city at the heart of the Amazon. From here you will have many options to explore further on a canoe or riverboat excursion along the Rio Negro, to enable you to make the most of your Amazon experience. Cruising with a specialised Amazon river cruise company will enable you to explore even deeper into remote wild rainforest.

CubaFrozen in time since the socialist uprising of 1959, Cuba was once described as “the most beautiful land ever seen” by Columbus (1492) and today, that claim still holds true. Its wildlife-rich rainforests, mountains, waterfalls and pristine beaches are understandably one of the main reasons this island is such an attractive proposition for cruisers; yet the juxtaposition of sublime nature with the ramshackle and somewhat derelict Latin American buildings in its cities, colourful vintage cars and lively districts full of dancing locals, makes Cuba a truly unique experience. The irresistible sounds of Mamba and Salsa cast out their siren song over the ocean, beckoning ships from afar to visit Cuba’s shores, and with Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Trinidad being added to the itineraries of more and more cruise lines in 2016/17, there has never been a better time than now to experience Cuba.Get there with… Star Clippers, Fred. Star ClippersCelebrating the Silver Years of

‘Tall Ships That Dreams are Made Of’ is the strapline of tall ship sailing specialist Star Clippers. Boasting a current fleet of three sailing vessels, Royal Clipper, Star Clipper and Star Flyer, the company’s unique cruising concept offers passengers an authentic sailing experience with all the activities, amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht.

Having celebrated their 25th birthday earlier this year, we speak to General Manager of Star Clippers UK, Fay McCormack, about what makes Star Clippers so special, and what passengers can look forward to in the exciting months and years to come…

Star Clippers have recently announced a much anticipated fourth addition to their fleet, the aptly named ‘Flying Clipper’ - what can you tell us about the new ship?

Fay: We are very excited about the addition of Flying Clipper which will be the biggest and most ambitious of our fleet to date! Measuring 8770 tons GRT (gross register tonnage) and carrying up to 300 passengers, she will be a near replica of the dramatic France II – the largest square rig sailing ship ever built, making Flying Clipper the world’s largest square rigger and the largest ship of its kind afloat today. She is scheduled to sail

Fay McCormack, Star Clippers UK

Cruisin’ Magazine 11

from 2017 and we will be announcing details of her first itineraries very soon… so watch this space!

What kind of facilities can we expect to see on board?

Fay: Those familiar with the rest of our fleet will be happy to see many of the same highlights on board including our popular Tropical Bar, cosy library and bowsprit net. In addition to this, she will boast three pools, a water sports platform in the stern, 34 balcony suites and open-seated restaurant.

The new ship is not the only exciting announcement to come from Star Clippers over the last few months. You will also be sailing in Indonesian waters for the first time from May 2017. What can you tell us about these itineraries and how popular they have been so far?

Fay: Interest has been really good so far. We have two itineraries on offer in Indonesia, eastbound and westbound, with each direction offering something really unique. I would describe the eastbound sailing as very ‘scenic’, more about the beaches and stunning views – it’s a trip that will really make passengers appreciate nature. A highlight of this 7 night eastbound voyage is Komodo National Park, where guests will have the opportunity to get close (but not too close!) to the infamous Komodo Dragon. The 7 night westbound sailing meanwhile, is perhaps best described as more ‘cultural’, offering an in-depth exploration of island hideaways such as Gili Nanggu and Carik, Lombok, as well as an opportunity to visit Mount Bromo; a striking active volcano situated in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. We also offer a selection of longer itineraries of 10-11 nights which will enable passengers to take in both Bromo and Komodo National Park; as well as back to back sailings of 14 nights for those who really can’t choose!

Given the interest in the new Indonesia cruises as well as the popularity of your Cuba and Asia itineraries, would you say that these more ‘exotic’ destinations are giving traditional destinations a run for their money?

Fay: We have certainly noticed a growing trend towards the exotics. Our long haul destinations are most popular this year, particularly Thailand, Star Clippers’ Barbados itinerary and Cuba. These ‘soft adventure’ destinations are currently outperforming the Mediterranean. I do think it’s time for a new destination - people are ready.

That being said there will always be interest in the ‘iconic faithfuls’ - sailing out of Venice is always going to be popular and our Monaco Grand Prix and Historic GP always sell out fast and need to be booked in advance.

Talking about Cuba – this is a ‘hot destination’ at the moment isn’t it?

Fay: Yes. When it comes to Cuba people are keen to experience it as it is now – and are in a bit of a rush to visit before its unique essence and dynamics change as tourism grows. So now really is the time to visit. However there is a real issue with hotel availability in Cuba and this will impact how far in advance you need to book. People also want to see Havana and stay longer to explore – Star Clippers is helping to combat the hotel shortage by extending our Cuba sailings next year to include an extra overnight stay in Havana on the ship.

Would you say that Star Clippers has a ‘typical’ passenger?

Fay: At one time I would have said yes but we get passengers from all walks of life. They are, however, likeminded and prefer the smaller more intimate atmosphere on board compared to larger ocean-going ships. Onboard Star Clippers guests are not tied to dining times or formal dress codes; passengers are independent, active, keen to explore the ports of call and have a sense of adventure – wanting to visit exotic and unique destinations but with the provision of comfortable onboard facilities. Many have a keen interest in sailing as you would expect, but not all.

When it comes to cruising ‘newbies’ would you recommend a product like Star Clippers?

Fay: Yes absolutely. If you like small, intimate ships with no stiff formalities, want to visit wonderful places, aren’t

worried about being constantly entertained and like to be ‘on the water’, then what better way than on a genuine sailing experience? All of our cabins are extremely well-appointed with ensuite facilities and passengers also get access to the Bridge for an insight into how these magnificent ships sail – a rare privilege! If I could give one tip to new Star Clippers cruisers, it would be to book early – as small ships our capacity is filled quickly.

Finally, can you sum up the SC experience in just three words?

Fay: Ooh three words isn’t a lot! Can I have four? No. Fay: Ok, then I would have to go with… Memorable, Authentic, Experience!

Whilst Europe’s waterways will always be firm favourites for river cruise fans thanks to their close proximity to the UK and opportunities for ‘no-fly’ cruising; exotic rivers much further afield are experiencing a boom in popularity amongst wildlife fans and adventure-seekers alike…

Mississippi, USADelve deep into America’s heartland with a cruise along the Mississippi river; home to charming scenery, fascinating wildlife and interesting culture. This is Mark Twain’s country, full of history waiting for you to absorb. Make your way along the border between Iowa and Illinois, and venture into Wisconsin and Minnesota on your travels.

Mississippi river cruises are generally split into two halves – the

Upper Mississippi, which takes in Minneapolis, Davenport and St. Louis; and the Lower Mississippi which runs right through the heart of the American Deep South including New Orleans and Memphis. Follow in the footsteps of Elvis Presley, experience the Mississippi Delta Gospel and some traditional blues or try some traditional Gumbo, Cajun chicken and Jambalaya finished off with some pecan pie, as you travel down river on board a classic American Steamboat!

Brahamaputra, IndiaYou may not have heard much about this river but you soon will! The mighty Brahamaputra runs from its source in southwest Tibet, through the Himalayas, across the Assam Basin and down towards Bangladesh, eventually meeting with the Ganges. Assam is perhaps best known for its

tea and silk of the same name, and has been labelled the ‘Serengeti of India’ thanks to its abundance of wildlife, yet this rich, green land of rolling hills, plains and forests is rarely visited by westerners. A cruise along the fabled Brahamaputra is a truly unique experience, with the Kaziranga National Park being the highlight – look out for rhino (Karizanga is home to the largest population of rhino in the world), buffalo, deer and vultures that inhabit this area, along with the beautiful Bengal tiger!

The Chobe, BotswanaAnother fantastic option for wildlife lovers, the beautiful Chobe offers an abundance of opportunities to experience wildlife in its natural habitat. Chobe National Park is renowned for its large herds of buffalo and elephant, whilst you can

Cruisin’ Magazine 13

also encounter up to 15 different species of animal including lechwe, impala, leopard, hyena and monkeys up close and personal on a game drive. A typical river cruise along the Chobe may also include private boat safaris, visits to African villages and traditional Africa dinners. Many can also be combined with pre or post-cruise stays in Cape Town or Johannesburg, as well as with visits to one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls, and/or safari lodge stays in Kruger or the Serengeti.

IrrawaddyAlso known as the Ayeyarwady, the extraordinary Irrawaddy river flows 1348 miles into the Indian Ocean from its source amongst Himalayan glaciers. Framed by monasteries, stupas, pagodas and traditional villages, and frequented by local fishermen in their canoes, you will be forgiven for imagining that your river vessel has transported you back in time.

Most trips will start from Yangon, yet more intrepid travellers may wish to travel upstream from Mandalay for a slightly more authentic experience. The World Heritage Site of Bagan, home to over 2000 monasteries, pagodas and temples, is perhaps the most impressive highlight – here you will marvel at the giant statues of Buddha and can climb the 777 steps of Mount Popa, the legendary home of animist nat spirits, for stunning views of the surrounding area.

YangtzeSee China from a different perspective. Away from the hustle and bustle of busy cities such as Hong Kong and Beijing, the Yangtze River winds its way through mountains, gorges and plains; bringing you fascinating insights into the remarkable history and culture of this impressive country. The dramatic Three Gorges offer photo opportunities galore – Qutang, Wu and Xiling each showcase their own unique characteristics, from sheer rock faces, to ethereal mists or dense vegetation perched perilously upon cliff edges. Whilst slow-paced and relaxing, a cruise along the Yangtze does not take long – 4 days is the norm, leaving plenty of time include a

pre or post cruise stay or tour. From Chengdu’s Pandas to Xian’s Warriors; the bright lights of Shanghai’s Bund, to the buzzing hutongs of Beijing; there is almost no end to the possibility of exploring more of China in depth.

Ask your Cruise Specialist for more details of exotic cruises along the rivers mentioned and for advice on how to experience them for yourself!

DecadesCruising across the

Back in the 1800s cruising for pleasure was a very new concept. Traditionally, ocean liners were used for transporting cargo and mail, and while many passengers signed up to join these journeys to experience ships that could go faster than any cargo ships before them, it wasn’t until 1844 that the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company (known today as P&O Cruises) launched the first ‘true’ leisure cruise, designed solely for pleasure, to the Mediterranean.

To accommodate the growing number of passengers on board, ocean liners began to introduce more and more amenities to enhance their level of comfort and transformed cruising into much more than simply getting from A to B – the journey itself started to become the destination with little luxuries such as lighting, more spacious decks, public areas and ‘entertainment’ in the form of shuffleboard, croquet and bowls to help passengers spend the time.

Before the 1960s however, cruising was very much reserved for the rich and privileged. Throughout the early 1900s any migrants seeking travel to wealthier plains were famously relegated to awful conditions within ‘steerage’; squeezed into converted cargo spaces with extremely basic facilities and often separated from the first class by metal gates. Thankfully, with the evolution of the ocean liner came the replacement of steerage with much more accommodating third class cabins. Now, ‘Inside Cabins’ - the lowest cost cabins of today’s cruise ships are actually very comfortable options for those on a budget. Royal Caribbean International has even overcome the issue of inside cabins’ lack of windows with the introduction of their ‘virtual staterooms’.

The Golden Age of CruisingAfter World War 1, which saw the RMS Lusitania, once the world’s largest passenger ship, sunk by a

German u-boat; the Great Depression; World War II, where many ocean liners including Queen Mary were commandeered as troopships; and finally the advent of the first commercial transatlantic flights in 1958; the passenger cruising industry saw massive decline, with many cruise lines losing tens of ships or going bankrupt.

It was clear that a revival was needed. This marked the beginning of cruising as we know it. ‘Ocean Liners’ gave birth to ‘Cruise Ships’, fitted with more modern amenities, entertainment facilities and benefiting from an expansion of itineraries. Cruise holidays began to be marketed to the

general public as an alternative to traditional land-based holidays and looking back at some of the brochures and adverts that were published throughout the 60s and 70s, it’s clear to see why cruising experienced such a ‘boom’ – a boom that was to be heralded as the ‘Golden Age of Cruising’. With attention grabbing headlines such as ‘Tired or Bored’ or ‘To Sunshine & Gaiety’ and with prices starting from as low as £81, cruising suddenly became affordable for all.

This is a trend that has continued today, with the cruise industry seeing a proliferation of ships, destinations and facilities that appeal to passengers from all walks of life.

Cruisin’ Magazine 19

With a larger selection of cabin categories, the addition of speciality restaurants, private spa facilities and upgrades to those who can afford it at a supplement, the modern cruise passenger can almost pick and choose their own holiday – tailoring it to their own interests and budgets.

Formal DiningCunard’s famous ‘Blue Riband’ Mauretania and its sister ship Lusitania first began the tradition of ‘dressing for dinner’ – with well-to-do passengers delighting in experiencing the lap of luxury at sea. It was the White Star Line (who later merged with Cunard) who truly put the ‘luxurious’ into cruising with the launch of their three Olympic-Class ships, including the ill-fated Titanic.

Now, luxury cruise lines including Cunard, Seabourn and Silversea still advocate the spirit of dressing for dinner with at least one, or two on longer cruises, ‘formal nights’ whereby guests are encouraged to don their tops ‘n’ tails and enjoy the first class dining experience of their predecessors.

The majority of these formal nights are now optional however, and most cruise ships offer alternative restaurants and casual dining options for those less inclined to live the high life. The advent of ‘freestyle cruising’ and open dining as opposed to set meal times, has further transformed onboard dining – with mixed opinions as to whether this is a positive, or negative change.

EntertainmentOnboard entertainment is perhaps one area of cruising that has seen the most radical changes; which is to be expected when looking at the rapid evolution of technology over the decades. While traditional deck games such as shuffleboard, croquet and lawn tennis can still be found on many long-established cruise lines; modern ships have surpassed the imaginations of many with the introduction of West End shows, computers and X-Boxes for the kids, rock climbing walls along with acrobatic shows and movie screenings.

Whilst many may wish that prices could remain at the level of 1960s cruising, it is fair to say that the evolution of the cruise industry has been more positive than negative for those seeking to travel the world by sea.

With more choice than ever before, those longing for the nostalgia of yesteryear can still find it, whilst those looking for a holiday with a difference can take advantage of the many niche cruise lines and ground-breaking facilities seen on modern ships.

Whilst it is worth noting that cruise lines do not impose any baggage restrictions, those seeking holidays in the Caribbean will most likely need to catch a flight before boarding their ship. Whatever your baggage restrictions may be, we run through a range of tips that will allow you to carry every item you could possibly need… and much more.

Check the weight of the empty suitcase Different airlines will have different restrictions on the amount of luggage you can take, but a great place to start in losing those vital kilograms is the bag itself. Heavier suitcases can weigh in excess of 5kg, whilst the lightest are around 3.5kg.

Place heavy items just above the wheelsThis will result in lesser likelihood of lighter or more fragile items becoming damaged in transit. It will also prevent your luggage from becoming top heavy.

Turn clothes inside out If you’ve ever turned up to your destination and unpacked only to discover a mysterious stain on your clothes – it pays to think ahead. Turn your lighter coloured clothes inside out and wrap shoes in disposable shower caps to limit the possibility of any stains.

Make use of empty spacesSpeaking of shoes, they will take up a lot of space in your luggage. Try to make full use of this by placing cosmetic bottles or other loose items inside them.

Vacuum packsOne guaranteed way of getting more into your luggage is to place certain clothing items in vacuum packs. Instead of endlessly trying to roll or fold to save space, put your clothes inside the sealed bag and squeeze the air out.

Hide money It pays to be safe and, whilst you will probably want to split your currency between your hold and hand luggage, you might want to take extra precautions. For your hold luggage, why not store cash in an empty cosmetics bottle? Do the same for your hand luggage by putting rolled notes in a lip balm container.

Pack essentials in hand luggageBe wary that hold luggage is often opened for inspection and it is also more likely to go missing than hand luggage. With this in mind, don’t put anything you would be devastated to lose in your hold luggage and carry anything you will definitely need with you at all times.

Plan your outfits in advancePlanning your packing in advance will give you time to co-ordinate your outfits. Pick a pair of trousers or skirt for example that you can wear with a number of tops, and choose your accessories carefully. And don’t forget, there are laundry facilities on board most ships so you can wear items more than once!

Cruise & Maritime Voyages specialise in providing no fly cruising holidays aboard smaller to mid-sized ships with a traditional British cruise experience. We believe these vessels offer a more leisurely and friendly ‘home from home’ style of cruising and maritime experience combining attentive and friendly service with stylish entertainment, delicious cuisine, daytime activities, and guest speaker and craft programmes on most sailings.

These smaller to mid-sized cruise liners are accessible to more ports of call than larger resort-style ships, offering more varied and interesting

itineraries. The emphasis is very much on attaining high levels of customer satisfaction and we strive to ensure that our passengers return home with many fond memories and will cruise with us again and again.

Cruise and Maritime also present a series of wonderful river cruises in association with our sister company TransOcean Kreuzfahrten. These Signature River Cruises operate on an international basis and offer intimate premium cruising for the more discerning.

It’s worth noting that tips are not mandatory, however they are an accepted way in which you can express your thanks to the crew, including stewards, waiters, housekeeping and many more ‘behind the scenes’ staff who often go unseen. Traditionally, tips were made by inserting the appropriate amount of money into an envelope and handing them to the crew member in question. Nowadays however, gratuities are generally added to your onboard account automatically to make things easier and are split between the relevant staff members.

Most cruise lines now also allow you to pre-pay your gratuities at the time of booking in order for you to budget accordingly and avoid any paperwork at the end of your cruise. Many luxury and boutique cruise lines, such as Azamara, Silversea, or Seabourn for example, include tips within the overall cruise fare and do not have tipping policies in place; for the more mainstream cruise lines however, we have put together a guide as to the daily amount ‘recommended’ by each of them to enable you to budget in advance:

Royal Caribbean International

Standard gratuities for Stateroom or Junior Suite guests = $13.50pp per day

For guests staying in a Grand Suite or above = $16.50pp per day

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

Gratuities for all guests aged 12 and over = £4 per person per day

Cruise and Maritime Voyages

Guests on board Magellan, Marco Polo and Astoria = £5 per person per day (£4 for cruises of 16+ days duration)

Guests on board Astor = Gratuities already included in cruise fare

P&O Cruises

Gratuities for all guests aged 12 and over = £5.50pp per day

*pre-payment of tips is not possible with P&O Cruises.

Oceania Cruises

Standard gratuities for stateroom guests = $15 per person per day

Additional amount for Penthouse Suites and above = $7 per person per day

Celebrity Cruises

Standard gratuities for Stateroom guests = $13.50pp per day

Concierge and Aqua Class staterooms = $14 per person per day

Suite Class staterooms = $17 per person per day. All of the above amounts are added automatically to your onboard account. However in light of all tips being voluntary and at the discretion of guests, the amounts can be adjusted at the Guest Services desks before the end of your cruise.

Guide to

Gratuities If you’re a first time cruiser, or even if you’re not, the subject of tipping is often one of the most debated amongst passengers. How much should you tip? Do you have to tip? Who do you tip and when? The fact of the matter is that tipping ‘etiquette’ can vary dramatically from cruise line to cruise line, but if you don’t anticipate the amount of gratuities you could pay out, you may find your cruise budget has expanded beyond your initial expectations.

If you have any questions regarding tips on your chosen cruise line, or would like to know how you can pre-pay your gratuities, please ask your cruise specialist.

Lying just off the western coast of South America, the Galápagos archipelago is inaccessible to most, yet this isolation has allowed nature to develop in ways exclusive to the islands.

Many travellers visit museums, yet very few will set foot on this unique living museum of natural history. Situated in stunning Ecuador, The Galapágos Islands are home to an abundance of wildlife that includes sun-basking land iguanas, giant tortoises, blue- and red-footed boobies, colourful marine iguanas, sea lions, penguins and Darwin's famous finches. Explorers are truly spoilt by the plethora of rare, exotic and fascinating species that call these islands home.

Luxurious small ship cruise line Silversea offers weekly seven-day voyages through the Galápagos Islands aboard the all-inclusive Silver Galapagos. Experience paradise as old as time itself and immerse yourself in exhilarating explorations from the moment you step aboard, from complimentary Zodiac tours, snorkelling and kayaking to nature hikes led by naturalist experts and certified guides.

Follow in Darwin’s footsteps

English naturalist Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos Islands in 1835 to study and uncover the remarkable wonders of this remote archipelago. After decades of research he proposed his Theory of Evolution which explains that the species from the mainland had reached the Galápagos Islands, and then changed, adapting to their new environment.

In an exclusive partnership, Silversea Expeditions and The Royal Geographical Society have joined forces to share knowledge, collated from centuries of scientific exploration, with guests onboard Silver Galapagos. The Society is custodian to a collection of over two million items, including maps, photographs, books, journals, manuscripts and iconic artefacts dating back to 1472. Using the society’s Galápagos-related items, Silversea are able to present Darwin’s day-to-day work in this fascinating archipelago.

A world apartSilversea is a world apart from other luxury holidays, delivering the ultimate all-inclusive travel experience. Owned and operated by one family, Silversea

is committed to offering superlative service and an exceptional on-board experience, with large-ship amenities aboard intimate, beautifully appointed vessels. And even in exotic isles such as the Galapagos, the hallmarks of Silversea remain, from the pampering attentions of their butlers to gourmet cuisine and complimentary wines and spirits throughout the ship. It’s the evolution of all-inclusive.

With unique itineraries, including expeditions to some of the most remote places on earth, Silversea reaches all seven continents and sails to more destinations than any other cruise line. And now, to complement the current fleet of five classic ships and three expedition vessels, Silversea has announced the construction of its brand new flagship, Silver Muse, which will set sail in April 2017. The new ultra-luxury ship, with just 286 suites and a maximum capacity of 596 guests, will make its maiden voyage from Monte Carlo to Nice at the start of an exciting 2017 season.

The Big Interview: We talk to Fay McCormack, general manager for Star Clippers UK as they celebrate 25 years of Tall Ship Cruising
