CRSBS has successfully provided environmental design consultancy to over 100 projects including institutional, residential, industrial, and commercial buildings across the country. Facilitation of Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment CRSBS provides consultancy for projects through various stages (that is pre-construction, building planning and construction, and building operation and maintenance of any building) towards compliance with the various GRIHA criteria. CRSBS has facilitated GRIHA rating for over 30 building projects thus far. Energy audits and energy management programmes CRSBS conducts energy audits and conservation studies to explore energy conservation possibilities in commercial buildings such as hotels, hospitals, and office complexes. Detailed energy analysis of various energy systems (lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water heating, and so on) through short-term monitoring are offered to recognize areas of energy wastage and ways recommended and mitigate the same. There is a pool of instruments such as digital lux meter, digital temperature indicator, flue gas analyzer, anemometer, ultrasonic flow meter, hygrometer, and power analyzer with data logging facility to facilitate audits and conduct monitoring studies. CRSBS has conducted over 200 energy audits and management programmes thus far. Awareness generation and capacity building CRSBS also offers its services to develop and design websites, educational material (books, brochures, and so on), and conduct workshops and training programmes to generate awareness on the subject of green buildings and build capacity towards the same. The team has developed the SHADA (Sustainable Habitat Design Adviser) website, the Knowledge bank on Sustainable building design (an e-tool to enable design, development and replication of sustainable habitats in a developing country), and published several books and information brochures on techniques and benefits of green and energy-efficient buildings. Enabling policy, formulation of norms, and standards CRSBS conducts research on various aspects of policy formulation and implementation, development of norms, guidelines, and frameworks for development with reference to green buildings in India. CRSBS has developed the manual for environmental clearance of large construction for the Ministry of Environment and Forests, EBRG (Environmental Building Regulations and Guidelines) for Hyderabad Metropolitan Area, National Green Building Rating System-GRIHA, contributed to the development and formulation of the Energy Conservation Building Code (2007), Model Bye-laws and the National Mission on Sustainable Habitats of the National Action Plan on Climate Change. Research on buildings and climate change CRSBS conducts research on Indian buildings and their impact on climate change; for example the current CO 2 emissions from the building sector in India, the emission reduction potential and the policies to facilitate environment-friendly buildings. The team has conducted research on various aspects of buildings and climate change with HSBC, United Nations Environment Programme, Asian Development Bank, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, among others. CRSBS (Centre for Research on Sustainable Building Science) has been set up to facilitate development and mainstreaming of sustainable buildings, to improve performance levels of existing buildings, and raise awareness on sustainable buildings. CRSBS comprising architects, planners, engineers, and environmental specialists has been offering environmental design solutions for habitat and buildings of various complexities and functions for nearly two decades.

Services offered• Environmental design consultancy• Facilitation of GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) • Energy audits and energy management programmes• Awareness generation and capacity building• Enabling policy, formulation of norms, and standards• Climate change related projects

Environmental design consultancyCRSBS provides specialized environmental design consultancy and building performance analyses. Services offered for various green design projects include the following.• Design charettes and review• Energy consultancy• Renewable energy potential assessment and system design• Building envelope study for shading, daylight, and material solution• Artifi cial lighting optimization and daylight integration• Water use estimation and water effi ciency calculation• Landscape assessment for water effi ciency and rainwater-harvesting potential• Appropriate waste management schemes and systems• Evaluation of systems for on-site treatment of waste water

A wide range of computation and simulation tools including DOE2, TRNSYS, ECOTECT, RADIANCE, AGI32, LUMEN DESIGNER, DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, BLAST, and RETScreen are used to assess the environmental and cost impact of the design decisions.

Energy audits and energy management programmesCRSBS conducts energy audits and conservation studies to explore energy conservation possibilities in commercial buildings such as hotels, hospitals, and offi ce complexes. Detailed energy analysis of various energy systems (lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water heating, and so on) through short-term monitoring are offered to recognize areas of energy wastage and ways recommended and mitigate the same. There is a pool of instruments such as digital lux meter, digital temperature indicator, fl ue gas analyzer, anemometer, ultrasonic fl ow meter, hygrometer, and power analyzer with data logging facility to facilitate audits and conduct monitoring studies. CRSBS has conducted over 200 energy audits and management programmes thus far.

Awareness generation and capacity buildingCRSBS also offers its services to develop and design websites, educational material (books, brochures, and so on), and conduct workshops and training programmes to generate awareness on the subject of green buildings and build capacity towards the same. The team has developed the SHADA (Sustainable Habitat Design Adviser) website, the Knowledge bank on Sustainable building design (an e-tool to enable design, development and replication of sustainable habitats in a developing country), and published several books and information brochures on techniques and benefi ts of green and energy-effi cient buildings.

Enabling policy, formulation of norms, and standardsCRSBS conducts research on various aspects of policy formulation and implementation, development of norms, guidelines, and frameworks for development with reference to green buildings in India.

Research on buildings and climate changeCRSBS conducts research on Indian buildings and their impact on climate change; for example the current CO2 emissions from the building sector in India, the emission reduction potential and the policies to facilitate environment-friendly buildings.

The team has conducted research on various aspects of buildings and climate change with HSBC, United Nations Environment Programme, Asian Development Bank, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, among others. Under Asia Pacifi c Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, high performance commercial buildings in India have been defi ned along with impact assessment on emission reduction.

Computer simulations are carried out for design assesment.

TERI buildings

> The TERI-RETREAT at Gual Pahari in Gurgaon is the fi rst example of a green building in the country. This centre has become the role model for all other green buildings that have come up in the country. This complex was inaugurated in 2000.> The TERI Southern Regional Centre at Bangalore is another example of eco-friendly design for that particular climatic zone. The daily per square feet electricity consumption of the complex is one-tenth that of a conventionally designed complex.> The new TERI-University campus, Vasant Kunj, also has been designed as per recommendation provided by CRSBS. This resulted in reduction in annual energy consumption by about 60% and reduction in annual water consumption by almost 25%.
