Crown Athletics Soccer Information Packet

2013 – 2014 October 17, 2013

“If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown

unless he competes according to the rules.” 2 Timothy 2:5 Welcome to Crown Athletics! Crown Athletics is a not-for-profit organization established in 2005 for the benefit of home educated students who are interested in participating in competitive sports programs. We offer a wide range of sports programs for homeschool athletes including cheerleading, cross country, baseball, basketball, drum and flag corps, fencing, football, golf, soccer, swim, tennis, and volleyball. Our team name/mascot is the Knights, and our colors are navy, maroon and silver. For more information regarding Crown Athletics, please visit www.crownknights.org. We provide home school students with consistent and biblical reinforcement through athletic competition. Parents work with us to help their child build character and a strong work ethic through athletics, and encourage them to accept growing responsibility as they mature. We provide a vital athletic experience that facilitates encouragement, confidence in one’s ability and discipline. Parents play a vital role in their student’s athletic performance, and in their emotional, social and spiritual development. In cooperation with parents, we seek to help build strong, confident, yet humble servants for Christ. Our Staff Michelle Rutledge serves as the Athletic Director for Crown. She has years of experience in many athletic fields and is especially knowledgeable in the area of homeschool sports. The Crown Operating Board is made up of nine home school parents. All members are actively involved in the home school community and their local churches. Each has demonstrated leadership skills, a servant heart, and interest and experience in various sports. The Operating Board works closely with the Athletic Director and the committee members of each individual sport to organize and direct the programs. Each member serves as a liaison for one or more of the Crown Athletics programs, and the soccer team board liaison is Ben Lee. The soccer team committee is made up of nine home schooling parents. They will be representing both middle school and high school teams. These members will be nominated by the Operating Board of Crown Athletics and will be contacted by either the Athletic Director or board liaisons to confirm their willingness to serve in this capacity. The soccer team committee members are David Ellis, Derek Williams, Colleen Wood, Jeff Miller, Myra Boerner, Jeff McCall, Derrick Wands, Tina Koehler and Stacie Allen.

Membership Crown Athletics is open to Kings’ Academy students and homeschool students in the state of Georgia. Participation is subject to the following:

▪ Participants must be abiding by all Georgia homeschool laws.

▪ Participants must meet the age and eligibility requirements of Crown Athletics and sport conference.

▪ Participants must attend any mandatory clinics and try out for a spot on the team as required by each program.

▪ Participants must sign a form stating their respect for the association’s statement of faith, and their intention to abide by the code of conduct, program policies and procedures pertaining to each sport.

▪ Participants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin. Crown Athletics’ High School Player Eligibility Rules are as follows

1. Private school students are NOT eligible to participate even if their school does not offer a sports program.

2. A student must not have reached his/her 19th birthday prior to May 1st, preceding their year of

participation.

3. Students have eight consecutive semesters or four consecutive years of eligibility from the date of entry

into the ninth grade. This means that once a student designates they are in high school, the four years of

eligibility “clock” starts ticking. (Please note that students may take 9th grade level courses while in the

8th grade and not be considered a 9th grader.)

4. Students must sign a Crown “Affidavit of Eligibility” before attending tryouts, clinics or evaluations.

5. Students must remain living at home, and if taking college courses, must also be dually enrolled in

HOMESCHOOL studies.

6. Students must not “walk” during Senior Recognition at games until they are actually graduating from high

school.

7. Players will be required to complete a “Senior Exit Form” once these eligibility limitations have been met,

and this will serve as communication that their participation with Crown Athletics has ended.

8. Other “sport-specific or conference” eligibility requirements may apply and can be found in the conference

manual.

9. Georgia Virtual School students are eligible to participate in Crown sports programs as long as the student

is educated at home.

The High School Soccer program hopes to operate as a Division 3 member of the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association (GICAA). In addition, the teams may supplement their schedules with games versus Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) programs, other home school teams, and private schools. The middle school team will operate as part of the NAML (North Atlanta Metro League) conference as an AA team and in addition may play other private schools.

Athletes in Multiple Crown Programs Crown athletes may participate in multiple sports programs during the season provided there is no conflict in practice and game schedules. Athletes must fulfill their commitment to the first program they join while participating in a second program. If there is a conflict, coaches of both programs must be notified and coordinate practice and game schedules. Schedule and Location The Crown Athletics soccer team season begins in late January/early February and ends in late April/early May with an awards ceremony at the end of season. A practice and game schedule will be provided and will also be posted on the Crown website at www.crownknights.org along with directions to practice and games. Other updates and information can also be found on the website. Registration

The registration period for soccer has begun and runs through February 8, 2014. You may register on-line via the Crown Website. Click on the registration bar at the bottom right of the home page and then follow the directions to establish an online account, if required, and then register. You also have the option to pay online. We ask that families please register as early as possible to help the soccer committee plan for the season.

Crown registration fees are determined by the individual committees governing their program. Registration fees will be refunded at 100% if an athlete withdraws from the program in writing before the first day of practice minus any expenses incurred for equipment, uniform, camp fees or other items that cannot be recovered by the program on behalf of that athlete. Crown Committees will determine the payment options of these fees for their individual programs. Participants who have not paid their registration fee within the determined time period of the program will be benched and/or become ineligible for play as determined by the individual program until the payment is received. Participants who leave the program without full payment of their registration fee will be ineligible for try outs and/or participation in the future until payment is made in full. Committees will report all non-paying participants to the AD. Additional costs may be incurred throughout the season beyond the initial registration fee. These costs typically include, but are not limited to:

Travel & living costs to and from away games and tournaments (Ride sharing is encouraged)

Fundraising, Sponsorships and Scholarships Fundraising is optional and may be used to help offset the cost of registration fees, camps, and competition fees, etc. All fundraising needs are determined by the individual programs’ committee and ideas must be submitted to the Athletic Director for approval. Crown Committees must follow all fundraising policies as set forth in the Fundraising Guidelines posted on the Crown web site. Sponsorships in the amount of $250 are available for Teams and Individual Crown athletes and may be used to help cover the cost of registration fees. Sponsorship Forms may be downloaded from the Crown Web site. Of the $250 sponsorship, 70% will go toward the teams’ or athletes’ fees and 30% will go into the Crown Operating Fund. Sponsors will have their contact and company displayed on the Crown web site and must email their contact and company logo to [email protected]. Checks must be made payable to Crown Athletics and turned into Tammy Fleming at Kings Academy with the Sponsorship form. The Committee is responsible for ordering a 5x7 team picture and the standard sponsorship plaque on file at Creative Awards (insert team picture in plaque). Parents or players obtaining sponsorships are responsible for delivering plaques to their individual sponsors. A limited amount of funds may be made available to provide partial scholarships for families in need. Please see the end of this document for the application that must be submitted to apply for partial scholarship assistance. Gate Fee Policy Crown soccer does not charge admission to home games for middle school and high school non-conference games. Our conferences may require admission fees be charged for regular season and/or playoff games. Please note that some of our away games have admission charges. Uniform and Dress Code Each athlete must dress in assigned practice and game apparel when participating in Crown athletic events. Team uniforms are to be worn neatly and as designed. Crown Athletics soccer team representatives reserve the right to define inappropriate attire. Some dress code issues may not be covered under specific guidelines of this packet. Therefore, please be aware that the soccer team coaches and soccer committee will ultimately determine what constitutes a violation of dress code for Crown Athletics soccer team events. Parental support of Crown Athletics representatives in these matters is greatly appreciated. Training

Our soccer team coaching staff will be the primary instructors and supervisors for all soccer team training. The skills taught will be matched to the developmental abilities of the participants. It is understood that great caution will be taken by our coaching staff to prevent accident or injury, but neither they nor any representative of Crown Athletics shall be held responsible in case of player accident or injury. Transportation & Supervision Coaches and/or committee members will be present at all practices, games and activities, but parents may also be asked to help with supervision as needed. No athlete can be left alone at any practice or meet site due to the potential for injury and the possibility of inclement weather. Parents will need to pick up their athletes promptly following activities. Athletes will be supervised for 15 minutes as they await pickup, after this time the coaches will need to leave. Please notify the coaches in advance if your child will be riding home with another family or other arrangements have been made. Remember to keep the coaches' phone numbers handy in case of emergency.

Parent volunteers are utilized to assist with all team transportation. Students may transport themselves to Crown Athletic events, with written parental consent. No athlete may transport other athlete or friends to competitive events. Students may share rides with other students to practices or other activities, only after written consent is filed with the committee members. Due to the nature of the circumstances surrounding certain events (length of drive, time of day, traffic considerations, etc.), permission for teen drivers to transport other students may be denied by the coaches or committee. The committee will maintain travel permission slips for athletes in case of accident or injury, and all vehicles containing athletes must stay together during travel to meets and any other group activities. Food and transportation costs will be the responsibility of each individual, with parents taking turns to help transport players to the games as needed. Details regarding meet transportation will be provided on an on-going basis. Insurance, Medical Release and Other Forms

Each athlete must have medical insurance in case of injury. A copy of both sides of insurance card is due at

evaluations and no later than first practice.

All students who have paid their registration fees are covered by a supplemental insurance policy. This policy is designed to assist with any expenses resulting from injuries sustained while participating in a Crown Athletic event. All claims should be filed with the student’s primary insurance carrier. A portion of the expenses, not covered by the primary policy, will be covered by the supplemental policy provided through Crown Athletics. An emergency contact and release form and a copy of student’s birth certificate (unless already on file) must be submitted to the soccer committee on evaluation day and no later than first day of practice. In addition, the following forms must be filled out, signed and returned at evaluations: Participant Code of Conduct, Parent Code of Conduct and CROWN ATHLETICS’ AFFIDAVIT OF ELIGIBILITY. Note: forms included at the end of this document. Behavior Crown Athletics and the Knights Soccer Team Program promote a wholesome family atmosphere for athletes and their families. Vulgar or abusive language, unsportsmanlike conduct, or fighting will not be tolerated. Vandalism or destruction of soccer team equipment or property at games or practice sites will not be tolerated. The Head Coach and Committee Members have the authority to place athletes on disciplinary suspension as a result of inappropriate actions by family members or athletes. Crown athletes may not participate in the use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, during the competitive season. Use of any of these products will result in immediate expulsion from the team. It is our desire to build a quality program, one that everyone can be proud of, especially the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, we request that each athlete put forth the serious effort required in order to be confidently prepared for the upcoming athletic season. Coaches expect 100% participation and effort from team members. All Crown athletes and coaches are required to sign a Code of Conduct and are expected to abide by this Code of Conduct throughout the entire season on and off of the field which includes Facebook, Twitter and any other media form of speech or conduct. Our desire is to honor Christ and each other in our relationships and reflect His character as a representative of Crown Athletics. Conduct by each Crown athlete will include The coach/athlete relationship is unique and special and many athletes form a special bond with their coaches that last a life time. A coach has an opportunity to make an impact on an athlete’s life and it is Crown’s desire that our coaches are not only developing an athlete’s skills and work ethic but most importantly their character.

There may be times when a coach may need to take disciplinary action when an athlete’s behavior is not in line with the expectations set forth in the Crown Code of Conduct and Parent Information Packet. The following disciplinary steps will be taken by the coach and committee members should that become a necessity. First Offense: The Coach will first speak directly with the athlete in violation of the Crown Code of Conduct to try to resolve the issue and report the offense to the Crown Committee Members. The Coach will determine the appropriate consequence for the offense (i.e., run laps, do push-ups, sit out a practice, etc.) Second Offense: The Coach will schedule a conference with the athlete, his/her parents and the Committee members and determine the appropriate consequence for the offense (i.e., removal from practice, sit the bench, sit out a game, etc.) Third Offense: The Coach will schedule a conference with the athlete, parents, Committee, and the Athletic Director and determine the appropriate consequence for the offense (i.e., bench for part or remainder of season or dismissal from the team). Discipline: Discipline is a necessary part of any athletic endeavor. Discipline builds character and creates a unified team. Therefore, we remind our team members that “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Jesus Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24. Respect: Athletes should show respect to adults at all times. A title (Mr., Mrs. Coach, etc.) should be used when addressing an adult. Team members must also treat each other with respect, kindness, and compassion just as God commands in Matthew 7:12, “So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you.” Punctuality: All athletes are expected to be ON TIME for each practice, game and team activity. Attendance is required in order to prepare for the season. It is very important that members be on time for practice and to depart for meets. A meeting time and location will be announced prior to meets, and everyone must be ready to leave when the caravan departs. Those who are late may have to provide alternate transportation. Absences: Regular participation at practice is highly recommended. Excuses for absence include severe sickness such as fever or vomiting, or a family emergency. In these instances, a parent should contact one of the committee members as soon as possible in order to let them know of the situation. We request that if a player is only mildly ill, they attempt to come and observe practice so that they will not miss any new skills being presented. Attention: Athletes should be listening when instructions are given and pay close attention to the coaches anytime they are speaking. Coaches expect wholehearted effort during practice. Eating, socializing, sitting down or leaving the practice area without permission is not allowed. If infractions occur, it is up to the coaches’ discretion regarding what type of disciplinary consequences will follow. Running laps or other types of physical exercise may be used as disciplinary measures. If misbehavior continues, a parent conference may need to be scheduled. Athletes should not fraternize with other acquaintances during games. They must never openly criticize or degrade opposing team members. Whether winning or losing, Crown athletes are expected to maintain a positive attitude and behave in a Christ-like manner. Opposing teams should always be congratulated at games’ end. Although we may encounter other athletes, parents and coaches who do not behave in a Christ-like manner, we must determine to keep our standards high and set an example for those around us. Remember always that we are representing not only Crown Athletics, but also the Lord Jesus Christ. Officials have full authority during all games. Athletes, coaches and parents must refrain from making disrespectful comments and gestures toward Officials before, during and after all games.

Weekly Exercise and Devotions

Crown athletes are expected to be in good physical condition during the athletic season. Therefore, it is important that they maintain a fitness regimen throughout the year. The coaching staff will provide direction regarding exercise that will help increase endurance, stamina, flexibility and cardio strength.

Not only should the “outward man” be in shape, but the “inward man” needs exercise also! Soccer Team practices may include a short devotional and prayer. Members or parents may request an opportunity to lead devotions and prayer for the team.

Varsity Lettering

Any student in grades 9-12, that completes a season as a Varsity participant (not JV) is eligible to receive ONE varsity letter. If a student is injured during the season and unable to compete, the coaches should determine how the student can best serve the team as a Varsity participant. Varsity letters will be provided by Crown Athletics to be presented at the end-of-season awards night. Sport-specific pins will be issued with the letter. Each subsequent year, varsity athletes will receive a bar pin signifying their continued participation.

Parents

Parent involvement in the soccer team program is a must! Volunteer parent positions will be outlined and sign-up sheets will be made available to participating families. Committee responsibilities include coordination of game schedules, uniforms, awards night, communications, fundraising, budget, team photos, and transportation. If a parent is unable to perform his/her volunteer assignment, it is their responsibility to find a replacement to cover their duty.

As Christians, we should seek to resolve conflict in an appropriate and Christ-honoring way, attempting to resolve all concerns or disputes promptly and peacefully. Parents should address concerns relating to their child or the team with the coaches before discussing them with other students and parents. If a resolution does not result from a parent and coach conference, a parent or coach is encouraged to address the issue with a soccer team committee member or members, in private. Please make every attempt to arrange such meetings with coaches or committee members in private AWAY from an athletic event, and on a separate day if possible. If the committee’s resolution is not acceptable to the parent or coach, either may appeal to the Athletic Director or bring the matter to the Crown Operating Board for intervention.

Pep Rallies

Crown sponsors spring pep rally to honor all crown athletes. These rallies are held during morning assembly on Fridays at the Kings Academy. Athletes should come dressed in their team jersey and a committee member or parent should be present to line the team up at the rally. The AD will contact all committees prior to the rally to secure a list of athletes who will be attending the rally.

Statement of Faith & Ceremonial Events Our Statement of Faith is based on fundamental Christian beliefs that we strongly support as the foundation of our organization. Crown Athletics does not promote or endorse any particular denomination. We desire to remain united in the salvation and love of Christ, avoiding any dissension that may be caused by denominational distinctives. All athletes wishing to participate in this program must agree to respect our beliefs, be compliant and participate during prayers and displays of patriotism, and not be disruptive of our right to conduct these traditional and ceremonial events.

We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God. (II Timothy 3:15; II Peter 1:21).

We believe there is only one God, eternally existent in three persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30).

We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33)

His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35);

His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15; 7:26)

His miracles (John 2:11);

His vicarious and atoning death (I Corinthians 15:3; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 2:9);

His resurrection (John 11:25; I Corinthians 15:4);

His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19);

His personal return in power and glory (Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11).

We believe that men are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ and that only by God’s grace and through faith alone we are saved. (John 3:16-19; 5:24; Romans 3:23; 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5).

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:28,29).

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:26, 28).

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life. (Romans 8:13-14; I Corinthians 3:16; 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:30; 5:18).

We hope you enjoy your experience with us! Our goal is to make this program one that will honor the Lord and bless the homeschool community. Please feel free to contact us at any time with your ideas or questions. We are here to serve you!

“If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.” 2 Timothy 2:5

At Crown Athletics, we are looking for homeschool athletes who are committed to Christ and biblical principles of behavior. We desire for our athletes to serve as positive examples in the community and as role models for younger students who observe their behavior. The opportunity to be involved in a Crown Athletics sports program is a privilege, and athletes are expected to behave in an exemplary manner. Participating students and parents must respect our foundational Statement of Faith, and athletes must abide by the following code of conduct:

I will behave in such a way that my coach and team members can entrust me with responsibility and leadership.

I will treat others with respect at all times, especially adults and those who have been given authority over me.

I will not lie, cheat, steal or engage in any other dishonest or unsportsmanlike conduct on or off the field.

I will fulfill my commitment to the coach and my team, being on time for practices and games and completing the season to the best of my ability.

I will work hard as a home educated student to complete my studies and assignments as required by my parents/teachers during the time I am participating in this sports program.

I will be a loyal team player and put the good of the team above personal glory.

I will be gracious in victory and accept defeat with dignity.

I will not engage in disrespectful conduct or speech including profanity, obscene gestures, offensive remarks, taunting, boasting, or other actions that demean individuals or harm the name of Christ.

I will treat coaches, referees or other game officials with respect and will not argue with official calls or decisions during the game or following an event.

I will exercise self control on and off the field and will not provoke or participate in fights or show signs of excessive temper or frustration when I am disappointed or angry.

I will maintain a healthy lifestyle and will not participate in the use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs, nor will I engage in any unnatural means to lose, gain or maintain weight or muscle.

I will maintain a sexually pure lifestyle.

I will honor the true nature of sportsmanship and play by the rules and not participate in any form of gambling or deception.

I will be open to instruction and be willing to listen to fair criticism from my coach(es).

I will never intentionally harm another player or engage in reckless behavior that could cause injury to myself or others.

I will promote unity among my team and will not participate in the spread of gossip or criticism regarding my coach, team member s or others associated with this program.

If I have a valid concern, I will handle it in a biblical manner through the proper channels, first going to my parent for counsel.

I will be a supportive member of Crown Athletics as an organization and an encouragement to all participating athletes, coaches and committee members.

Soccer Specific conduct: I understand that a receiving a Red Cardin a game means that I will be suspended from play for the following

scheduled game and that accumulation of four yellow cards will mean the same one game suspension.

CROWN ATHLETICS

Parent Code of Conduct

The following standards of conduct outline a philosophy that is paramount to the game of soccer.

Soccer is a sport which belongs to the players. While soccer games are exciting for parents and

spectators, parent and spectator excitement and enthusiasm must be both positive and controlled.

Uncontrolled or abusive parental behavior is not accepted at Crown Athletics.

Conduct: Soccer is not interactive for the spectators; do not address the referee at any point before, during or after the

match. Continuous yelling is distracting for both teams and at times can reveal the parents lack of understanding of the

game. Enthusiasm, in short bursts of encouragement, is welcome and needed. Always show respect to the players and

spectators of the opposing team.

Your Player: Crown Athletics attempts to provide the best coaching and training available for your player. Keep this in

mind when encouraging your player and their teammates during a match. Crown Athletics wants and needs your

enthusiasm and support for our teams, but only in a constructive manner. A parent’s duty is to encourage the players;

not to coach or to criticize.

The Referee: Never use foul or abusive language toward any of the opponents, referees; center or

linesmen. If you have an issue with a referee you bring it to your coach’s attention after the game and let the coach

deal with the issue. No need to be a distraction to the game, no one came out to hear parents yell. Remember that each

referee is just as different as the field the game is played on.

Your Coach: Your coach will never come to your place of work and tell you how to do your job…please grant your

coach the same respect. If you have an issue with your coach you should address that directly with the coach at an

appropriate time and place. Immediately before and after a game is usually not the best time or place. After having an

unemotional discussion with your coach regarding your issues if you are not happy with the coaches response you

should take your issue to the Crown Athletics Soccer Committee Chairman.

The Laws: In order to be a supportive parent you must have an understanding of the primary laws of the game.

Familiarize yourself with the basics; offside, penal fouls and non-penal fouls.

Anyone who violates this Agreement and Code of Conduct is subject to immediate dismissal from any game and

disciplinary action up to and including being expelled from the Crown Athletics soccer program.

I (we) have read the above information and accept this agreement as part of my player’s

commitment to the Crown Athletics and acknowledge the consequences of

not abiding by this agreement.

Crown Athletics Soccer Financial Aid Application 2014 Crown Athletics is pleased to offer a limited financial aid program for soccer athletes who are in need of financial assistance in order to play soccer. The amount of assistance is limited each year, and based on availability on a first-come, first-served basis. The Financial Aid committee may have to make qualifying adjustments based on the availability of funds. Following this review, the applicant will be notified regarding their eligibility. Financial Aid is granted based on financial need only, and is not based on playing ability.

In order to determine eligibility of players, completed Financial Aid requests must be received no later than the final night of try-outs.

All Financial Aid requests are strictly confidential. Information is for the sole purpose of helping the Crown Soccer Committee determine financial aid eligibility, and will not be shared with anyone except the Soccer Committee. Please return the completed application to:

Colleen Wood Attn: Soccer Committee 4616 Gilhams Road

Roswell, GA 30075

Expectations:

Crown Soccer offers “working Financial Aid.” Families receiving aid are required to volunteer in support of team duties. The player or player’s family will be required to volunteer time at some level as a trade-off for receiving Financial Aid. Unusual circumstances will be evaluated on an individual basis, and exemptions granted based on Financial Aid Committee approval. It is our intention for every child who wants to play soccer to be able to play, and at the same time secure the continued financial resources to do so.

Statement of Need/Request: (please provide any information you feel the committee should take into account

when considering your application for financial aid. i.e. change in employment, change in marital status,

substantial medical expenses, or other extenuating circumstances.)

I certify and affirm the above information is true and complete to the best of my knowledge. I agree to inform Crown Athletics of any change in my income, family size, or ability to pay. I understand incomplete information could jeopardize eligibility for financial assistance. I have read the Program Description and understand there is no guarantee of fee assistance. I understand its officers, directors, commissioners, coordinators, coaches, and volunteers make no promise or assurances of financial aid. I understand the award amount is subject to funds available and the family’s ability to pay and is NOT based on playing ability. Signed: ________ Date: _______________
