By helping with transportation and/or by simply cheering our team with loud encouragement go a long way in being an active part of our school community. Rather than asking “What did you do today?”; ask instead questions that relate to specific learning, such as “What did you learn when you were doing the bead patterning today?, or, What did you learn when the teacher read that book aloud?” We encourage you to focus on asking “How do you know this?”, “What makes you think that?”, “What evidence do you see to support your thinking?”, and “How did you get that answer?” In addition, open communication with your child’s teacher and asking specifically how you can support the learning at home is another way you can help . Boomerang Lunches are well underway. The encouragement to return any wrappers, baggies, apple cores, banana peels, etc teaches our children their responsibility to the school. This will then translate to their responsibility to the communities as a whole. Although there has been a slight decrease, there is much room for improvement. In turn, Boomerang Lunches, allows you the opportunity to know exactly what was eaten at school or not eaten allowing you to have discussions with your child. Safety is our collective responsibility. Thank you for your cooperation in respecting the fact that ‘homemade treats’ for the whole class is no longer permitted in the school. Cross-contamination is the main concern. Your home may use/cook with the allergens our students are highly sensitive to. This then leads to those same allergens being present on countertops, sponges, plates, cutlery, etc. Thus, ‘homemade treats’ is unsafe for all our children, which include cut-up fruits/vegetables. Principal’s Message

“It takes a whole village to raise a child”

African Proverb

It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of November with the December holidays creeping closer and closer. Yet, the recurring theme of our ‘collective responsibility’ in each child’s safety and learning is an appropriate focus for this newsletter. The past few weeks have been quite busy with various activities such as the infamous Crowle Bowl and Area/Regional Cross Country Meets. Appreciations go out to all of you, parents and family/friends, who supported the students of E.T. Crowle during these events. By helping with transportation and/or by simply cheering our team with loud encouragement go a long way in being an active part of our school community.

In the classrooms, evidence of students engaging deep in curriculum learning and relearning is constantly observed. Discussing learning with your child and asking questions that relate to the ‘process’ as opposed to ‘getting the right answer’ will continue to develop critical thinking skills.

E.T. CROWLE NOVEMBER / DECEMBER NEWS

Principal Message continued…..

Another very important safety issue is the traffic in front of the school. When you drop-off and pick-up your child, safety is our priority. The front of the school is not an ideal set-up for dropping off and picking up your child. However, a plan is in place. With your cooperation and modeling appropriate behavior when driving and walking with your child, we will avoid any unnecessary situations.

Do not make illegal U-Turns.

Use the ‘kiss and ride’ pylon area to drop your child off safely.

Do not pick-up/drop-off your child in the ‘live lane’. Use the pylon area.

Use the crossing guards to cross the street.

If your child is crossing the road by himself/herself, remind him/her to use the crossing guards to cross the street.

Do not park in the pylon area. Pylons are placed there for the ‘kiss and ride’ area to ensure your child’s safety.

Respect the staff on duty. Their priority is to keep your child safe and your full cooperation is required.

Birthday Book Celebration

October was the first month for the "Celebration Book Dedication"

program at Crowle and it has been an excellent start. In the first two and a

half weeks of the launch, six birthdays had been celebrated and six new books had

been donated to the Learning Commons. Thank you to those families for their

contributions and early embrace, and to those families that have provided positive

feedback about the program. Attached you will find November's Wish List which re-

moves those that have been purchased and also adds new titles.

SAVE THE DATE & HOLD YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING!

On November 19, 2015 between 6:30pm and 9:00pm, ET Crowle is hosting a

fundraiser at Chapters Indigo at Woodside Square near Woodbine Avenue and Hwy 7. 20% of all sales during that time

period ( except sales merchandise ) will be donated to the ET Crowle Learning Commons by Chapters Indigo. Simply by

doing some holiday shopping that night, you will be supporting literacy at Crowle. Invitations will be sent home the second

week in November but please pass on this message to family and friends. As long as an individual says they are with the

Crowle community, their sales are included in our results!! Hope to see you there!

Monthly Book Recommendation Draw

This month ET Crowle embarks for the first time on Canada’s

largest recreational program promoting Canadian authors. The

objective of the program is to encourage the love of reading and

will be run from JK through Grade 8 at Crowle.

Students in JK-2 participate in the Blue Spruce program, Grades 3

and 4 in the Silver Birch Express, Grades 5 & 6 in Silver Birch and

finally Grades 7 & 8 in the Red Maple program.

We are very excited about this initiative and will be rolling it out

students and teachers between November 16 and 18. There will

be initiatives to encourage reading including trivia, a Read-a-Thon

party in late winter for Grades 5-8, the chance to attend the

Festival of Trees in Toronto in May and weekly time set aside during

recess to promote the love of reading. Each month we will keep

you abreast of the program and what’s going on at Crowle.

To encourage literacy and support

the connection between reading and writing, a monthly draw is held for all

students who post a book recommendation on the Learning

Commons website

etcrowle.wikispaces.com

This month our winners were Sabrina Samnani, Faith Lee, Taneya Raguram

and Steven Au. Congratulations to

all winners!
