Innovating e-Learning 2011Learning in Transition
Facilitator
Tom Barrett is one of the UK’s best known classroom teachers, working in the elementary
schools sector. Hecurates and shares thousands of practical ideas from teachers across the
globe on his blog edte.ch, and puts into practice the very best thinking on educational
technology to inspire and engage children in their learning.
Tom works on leadership, technology adoption and improving teacher capacity with NoTosh in
schools across the UK, and inspires teacher audiences with fresh ideas for engaging young
people in learning.
Presenter
Ewan McIntosh is CEO of NoTosh Limited, a startup that works with creative industries on the
one hand, and then takes the processes, attitudes and research gained from working on those
projects to the world of education, providing schools, districts and Governments all around the
world with ideas, inspiration and research on how to better engage teens.
McIntosh was a French and German High School teacher, before moving from the classroom
into technology research and leadership as Scotland’s first National Advisor on Learning and
Technology Futures. He later helped set up one of the most ambitious investment funds from a
public service broadcaster in the UK, the $100m 4iP Fund from Channel 4 Television.

Technical
problems
• Use the text-chat to engage with other delegates, presenter and moderators
about the content of the session.
• You can send private text-chat messages e.g. to moderators or to individuals.
• You can change your Elluminate layout to “Wide layout” to make it easier to
follow the text-chat (select “View … Layouts…Wide layout”).
• If you are distracted by the text-chat, you can “unlock” the Elluminate layout to
enable you to adjust the size and position of the text-chat sub-window (uncheck
“View…Layouts …Layout locked”)
• It is best to run the Audio Set-up Wizard to test your audio set-up each time you
enter an Elluminate room (select “Tools…Audio… Audio setup wizard).
• You must use a headset/microphone if you want to ask a question in audio.
• Only use your microphone when guided by a moderator – click on the mic icon
(bottom-left of screen) to turn it on and click on it again to turn it off.
• Only draw on the whiteboard if guided by a moderator.
• Send a private text-chat message to “moderators” and they will try to help.

'Children have to learn the basics and grammar
and syntax before they can develop their
writing', thundered Nick Seaton, chairman of the
campaign for Real Education'. 'A knowledge of
grammar must always come before creativity.'

come before a weighing of the evidence,

Challenge 7Does Higher Education
really want the future?
Sharples’ Strategic
Priorities:
1. Socially & personally inclusive education.
2. Blended learning beyond the institution
3. Technology for teaching difficult subjects
4. Shareable & reusable resources
5. Assessment for learning
6. Support environments for professional
practitioners (continuing professional developemt)

Thinking Space
Sally Graham and Joy Jarvis will chart the developing story of the conference,
creating a virtual thinking space to visually present ideas, common themes,
connections, views, issues and questions that arise from the conference.
You can access the online Thinking Space at http://bit.ly/tieV01.
As Sally and Joy develop the Thinking Space during each day of the conference,
