Volume 5 Issue 3 President’s Message May – June, 2011 The first four months of the year have been among the most active I’ve seen in several years. It’s a reflection on the members of the club hosting and organizing events for the enjoyment of fellow club members. It’s the kind of commitment it takes to insure the continued success of our club. My thanks to all the members who have planned, organized, assisted or participated in events. Our Activities Director, Scott Feck, has done a wonderful job of keeping the process moving forward and enticing members to host events. The number of people attending our Business Meetings has steadily increased and at times has been close to standing room only. We are taking up more and more room at Floridino’s for meals, libations and socialization following our monthly Business Meetings. It’s really great to see and hear all the activity going on around the tables at Floridino’s. The active interchange reflects the friendly and highly social atmosphere within our club. It’s also why more and more people are approaching CCA as prospective members. As President, I want to make sure we maintain the social aspect and interactions of our club and its members. In upcoming meetings the Board will be discussing ways to insure our club continues to maintain its focus and meet the needs of our members. Of course, the Board is open to suggestions and input from any of our members. Please feel free to contact any of your Board members or attend a Board meeting to share your ideas. I am especially pleased our club is not one dimensional. Not only do we have well organized social activities, support charitable organizations and perform community service, but members also find time to actively participate in car restoration, track racing, autocrossing and car shows. The Corvette Club of Arizona has become a recognized and competitive club in the Roadrunner Region of NCCC and is continuing to grow in stature. If you want to experience a new venue but are not interested in racing your car, come out for a ride-a-long at one of the many local track or autocross events. Your fellow club members who compete in the events can help you “strap in” the passenger’s seat. It’s one thing to drive a high performance vehicle like a Corvette on the street. However, it’s a totally different experience when you participate in an organized, full throttle, track event – it’s a rush! Congratulations on your membership in a great club composed of outstanding people with common interests and out going personalities. It’s what continues to feed the growth of our club and make it the best Corvette club in AZ. Sincerely, Jim Crosstalk May-June 2011

CCA Ladies Cookin’ Up a Good Time Article by Esther Enriquez Photos by Marge Rhode

On Monday evening, February 28th, 13 adventurous CCA ladies headed up to Scottsdale and enjoyed an evening of fun, frivolity, and fine dining. Thirteen chefs-in-training met at Sweet Basil cooking school, did a little shopping, a lot of chopping, dicing, baking, grilling and then sat down to savor their efforts. Throughout the evening there was a whole lot of laughing, sharing of cooking techniques and hustle to produce an appetizer, dessert or cocktail that brought out the oohs and aahs from a hungry group. Chili beef skewers, shrimp skewers, crab cakes, bruschetta, phyllo filled with spinach, deviled eggs, and chocolate-drizzled tortilla crisps with homemade ice cream all added up to an enjoyable and satisfying evening for all. I think we need to make this an annual tradition – and next time, maybe we’ll even invite the guys to come along and learn their way around a kitchen!

St. Patrick’s Day Party

Hosts: The Heavlin’s and Rhodes Photos by Bob Swanson

On March 12th, 36 members accepted the invitation to gather at the Heavlin’s cottage for an early celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The invitation suggested a wearin’ of the green and there were many shades of green to be seen.

The menu included delicious appetizers, Corned Beef with creamed horseradish, Dubliner Beef Stew, Red Potatoes, Potato Famine Salad, Glazed Carrots, Celtic Cole Slaw, Rolls and Irish Soda Bread. Dessert was Grasshopper Pie, Connemara Marble Bundt Cake and an assortment of Irish Cookies. There was an assortment of spirited beverages as well as a Virgin Mary slush drink. Special recognition gifts were awarded. For getting the most correct answers on the Irish Knowledge Quiz, the Mundy’s received a $10- gift card to Murphy’s Irish Pub in downtown Chandler. The Italian godfather, Bob C., received Kokopelli Green Wine for his help formulating the Irish Quiz questions. For guessing the correct M&M count, Jim Wendland got to take home the M&Ms as well as the jar. Bob Bassett was awarded a big green pub mug for the best last line of his Irish limerick. Scott Feck was given a special honor for helping park the cars.

The sign Marge is pointing to reads, “You can always tell an Irishman, but you can’t tell him much!” Thank you to the Heavlin’s and Rhodes for hosting this special event.

Tortilla Flat Driver Article by Dave & Patty Friesz

Photos by Patty Friesz & Bob Swanson

The morning of March 26th, 2011, was sunny and cool with 29 Corvettes rounding up at Starbuck’s for a CCA Driver to Tortilla Flat and then on to the Gold Canyon Golf Resort for lunch.

The drive to Tortilla Flat was picturesque with the Superstition Mountains providing the setting as the group drove through some of Arizona’s old gold country. The seasonal wildflowers were in full bloom. The pace was leisurely, although as we neared Canyon Lake, drivers got to exercise steering and brakes negotiating the numerous sharp, off camber, corners.

Tortilla Flat provided a great photo opportunity, as most of the cars were able to park in front of the old buildings. A mini car show broke out as many other visitors gathered around to take photos of our cars. CCA members took photos, walked the boardwalk, shopped in the General Store and visited the museum. At 10:00 drivers and passengers saddled up and began the drive to Gold Canyon with an interim stop at Superstition Mountain Museum. As the last cars pulled into the parking lot, we were told that one of our cars, Joe Hitzel’s 1966 coupe, failed to start and a jump-start was unsuccessful. Joe and Roseann stayed with the car in Tortilla Flat, awaiting a tow truck. The balky ’66 was started by the tow truck and the stranded driver and friend used their idle time wisely with burgers and frosty mugs.

The remainder of the group toured the old props of the Movieland film industry, watched a mock shootout, and panned for the cameras. The arrival at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort was spectacular with 28 Corvettes filling the drive as we awaited the parking attendant to lead us to our

reserved parking lot. CCA members were seated in the Sunset Room with great views of the golf course and mountains. Our pre-ordered lunches began to arrive to our tables almost immediately. Everyone was served within 30 minutes and all seemed to enjoy their choices. Our Driver with 29 cars may be a record for the current CCA membership. All participants seemed to enjoy the day and as hosts we enjoyed the fellowship. To view additional photos visit the following link to Roxie PhotoShow: http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Yh3Ei6Ps

CCA Highway clean up

By Mike & Nancy Meyers, Event Hosts Photo, Esther Enriquez

On Saturday, April 2nd we held the first trash pickup for the club in 2011. Our designated site with ADOT and their Adopt a Highway Project is located at Arizona Avenue and Riggs Road, one mile both North and South on both sides of the street.

There were nine of us that met for breakfast at Hoosiers Cafe over in Chandler at around 7:30 am. From there we headed out to the pickup site where we met up with six more members of the Club and jumped right into the task at hand at about 9 am. Jim Enriquez had mentioned to Nancy and I that it might be nice to "plant" something for a member or two to 'find' during the outing, as over the years, several members have actually found money! So Nancy took that to heart and found some brightly painted plastic Easter eggs, put a Snickers bar and a $5 bill in each of four eggs. We placed them at various places onsite before we headed out for breakfast. All the money was found by Club Members, during the clean-up. A good time was had by all. We finished around 11:00 am, before it got too hot. Nancy and I want to thank everyone who participated. We feel that this, our first attempt at hosting this event, was indeed a success and look forward to the next round, which should be sometime in either late October or early November, once we return for the Winter. Thanks again and we hope everyone has a great summer! Nancy and Mike Meyers

C.C.A. Founder's Day April 9, 2011 By Frank & Darlene

Heavlin, Event Hosts Photos: Jan Adams

& Bob Swanson

There were 18 drivers signed up for the Founder's Day Driver to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. However, days prior to the event, Mother Nature decided to throw a little curve ball of some not-so-nice weather. The day of the event with a 100% chance of rain, 16 brave drivers showed up!!! We left Chandler and headed south toward Tucson; had a little rest stop at Marana. No need to worry about the candy bars melting in 43º weather.

We arrived at the Museum around 11:00 am and took a group picture with our blue raincoats on, and soon became known as the "Blue Man Group".

Then it was off to lunch at the Ironwood Terrance, to celebrate

with cake. There was another Corvette Club at the Museum, so we invited them to share our Birthday Cake. The skies cleared-up somewhat after lunch and we were able to tour the museum! A 2:30 pm departure back to Chandler, where the sun came out for the first time all day!!!

We then enjoyed a champagne toast and Prime Rib Dinner at the San Marcos Resort to finish off a wonderful day. Thanks to all who attended, it was fun and memorable!!! To view a slideshow of Founder’s Day, click on the following link: http://www.photoshow.com/watch/HZ8Tu7rc

Corvettes-in-the-Park Article by Jim Enriquez

Photos by Bob Caccamo, Garry Mion & Bob Swanson In May of 2010 it came as both a surprise and shock to CCA members that Julio G’s Mexican Restaurant had closed. Especially since one month earlier we held our 12th annual, record breaking Julio G’s Corvettes on the Green All Corvette Car Show. The spectators were plentiful; Julio’s had the most successful business day every hosting a car show and we ran out of spaces to park Corvettes. But unfortunately’ in today’s economy, no business seems to be safe. Dick Lipson, the owner of Julio G’s was a great friend and supporter of the Corvette Club of Arizona and our show. Dick, a Corvette owner himself, really appreciated our show and provided both promotional and financial support. We owe a great deal of thanks to Dick for his support over the years. However, timing, location and venue are critical aspects of running a successful car show during the very competitive spring season. So without delay, 2010 CCA President Jim Kerber initiated a Spring Car Show Search Committee and asked me to spearhead the process. The initial Spring Car Show Search Committee consisted of a highly qualified group of volunteers in: Bill Rhode, John Marsh, Mike Meyers, Dave Friesz, Bruce Mundy and Mike Mileskiewicz. The committee held its first planning meeting on June 15, 2010 and we were off and running from that point. A set of criteria for our new location was established and after a search, A. J. Chandler Park seemed to be an obvious and unanimous choice as our first option. From that point, the process required approval by the City of Chandler and support from the Downtown Chandler Community Program (merchants group). A great big thanks goes out to both Bob Caccamo and Darlene Heavlin for their assistance and guidance in helping us move through the approval process.

Corvettes-in-the-Park Continued

Hosting our inaugural Corvettes-in-the-Park show on April 16th represented ten months of organizing and planning by our search committee and show organizers. It was a long process, but the results speak for themselves. We matched the 2010 Julio G’s record of 69 Corvettes. Not a bad start for what can prove to become the largest Corvette show in Arizona. In addition, this year’s event marked the first time CCA has used the spring show to support a local charity. The club will be donating almost $700 to the Chandler Christian Community Center (food bank) as a result of the show. I want to thank the members of the search committee for their help and input. In addition, the responsiveness and adaptability of our members in supporting the show and especially their efforts on the day of the show, made all the difference between success and failure. I want to specifically recognize the great job the parking crew did tucking Corvettes into every nook and cranny of the park’s Ramada area without a single scratch or even a close call to any of the beautiful Corvettes entered into the show. Their efforts represented a great job done on the fly! And of course, I thank Mike Terrey and Thorobred Chevrolet along with the San Marcos Resort and Golf Course for their help and support. Special thanks go out to Bill Rhode for his active support during the entire process and to George Ray for his contributions and input. Our next step will be for our club’s recently formed Car Show Committee to assess all aspects of the show and make recommendations for improving next year’s event. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Hope you enjoyed the event and are willing to help with next year’s show! & Garry Mion The driver began at 8:05 am with 16 cars (14 Vettes and 2 others) arrived at its destination at the Chandler Airport at 8:08 am, the shortest driver ever.

On display were a B-25, B-17, P-51, DC-3 and an Apache Helicopter, in addition to many bi-planes and assorted other aircraft.

The airport manager made picture taking very easy and everyone had the opportunity to pose their car. We camped out under the wing of a 1951 Cessna that provided shade for all. A unique opportunity and a good time by all who attended.
