CCA Friends,
This year has taken off in its usual flurry of activity and I can tell you the Board has been working hard to stay ahead of it all. A lot goes on behind the scenes, but probably the most visible change you’ll notice is the website. The entire website has been reorganized, is more user friendly, has much added information and is all wrapped up in a new look. This is a work in progress, as it always will be for a website, but Howard Katz has done a TREMENDOUS job in overhaul-ing it! I encourage you to take a look at both the public pages and the Members Only section.
The last few years some of our members have been working at the
Russo and Steele car show held each January at the Salt River
Fields. In appreciation, Russo and Steele makes a donation to CCA
after the show. This year Bruce Mundy, Al Yarusso, Ray & Pat Jen-
kins, David Edgington and Roc Campise all donated time to work at
the show and had a great time doing it! CCA recently received a
check from Russo and Steele for $1000, so thanks to the six of you
for your volunteer hours!
And finally, one more group is working behind the scenes to recom-
mend a 3-5 year plan for the club. The CCA Future Committee is
looking at such things as communications, membership size, activi-
ties, cost/subsidies, sponsorship and car shows. The committee
needs your help and soon you’ll be asked to participate in a member
questionnaire. I would encourage all of you to complete the survey
and let your voice be heard. It’s the members who respond who’ll
help shape the club’s future.
And while you’re at it, smile, you’re driving a Vette!
Marge

Saguaro Lake Vette Brunch Hosted by David and Patty Friesz
The Vette Set Diners tried a different
venue in November. Pay and Dave
Friesz planned a min-driver for the
participants of eleven to Saguaro
Lake for a Sunday Brunch on Novem-
ber 20th. W met in East Mesa and
caravanned along the photographic
McDowell Mountains to the Lake-
shore Restaurant in the Saguaro
Lake Marina.
The weather looked threatening but
it held off and warmed up so we
could sit out on the patio to enjoy the
views of the Lake while we cowed
down on yummy omelets and fluffy
pancakes. And of course, there were
Mimosas and Bloody Mary's too. All
had a great time getting together
and becoming better acquainted
with new members.

CHICKS LUNCHEONS HO S T E D B Y : N O R M A MA R S H & DE N I S E LO T T
Our CCA Chicks continue to meet for lunch each month on the second Friday. We
meet at 11:00 a.m. at the Stone & Barrel restaurant in the Oakwood Country Club.
All Chick members and prospective members are welcome to join us. If you are
interested in receiving a monthly reminder, email: [email protected].
Most of our gatherings find an opportunity to celebrate an event. For January it was a birthday and February
the focus was Valentine’s day. The surprise February entertainment was Sheryl Katz’s “Four in a Chord”
barbershop quartet bringing their harmony to the Valentine theme. Not only did they entertain, but they
also brought a lovely yellow rose for each of the lunch attendees.
Come join in our social afternoon on the second Fridays whenever your scheduled permits.

CCA AWARDS BANQUET HO S T E D B Y J OE A N D J E NNIF E R H IT Z E L
CCA Awards Banquet January 2017
Fantastic! Fun-filled! Fabulous! Food! Friends! Festivities!
Celebrating CCA’s 41st year!
We gathered at the Crowne Plaza on a rainy Phoenix Saturday to celebrate with our
Corvette friends. Cocktail hour included formal and “photo booth” pictures. We
enjoyed delicious entrees of filet, salmon, and pork tenderloin, followed by a tasty
dessert of white cake with raspberry filling. Terrific DJ Simon who provided music,
trivia, dancing, and games for an enthusiastic audience. There was a peaceful
transition of presidential power from Jim Enriquez to Marge Rhode.
We recognized the outgoing and incoming Board members as well as members who have
contributed to the success of our club, including all of those
who hosted events in 2016 (1st place Lott, 2nd place Enriquez,
3rd place Rhode).
Other important recognitions included Mike Terrey for his
outstanding service over the years at Thorobred Chevrolet; Jim
Kerber for resolving our website’s technical problems; Jim Enriquez for serving as
CCA President for a total of 5 years. Then onto more dancing and a couples silly
scavenger hunt won by the Bassett's. CAN’T KEEP UP I SEE
Finally ended the evening with 2 raffle prizes won by Pat Jenkins (did you notice she was wearing a skirt?) and Scott
Feck. As Bob Swanson accurately described, people will do anything for a little blue ticket! Thank you to our hosts
Joe & Jennifer Hitzel for a wonderful evening! And thank you to their helper Janet, Jennifer’s sister; Janet lives in
Pittsburgh and her husband owns a yellow C7 named Franco Harris.

Packages From Home 2017
Thursday January 26th started out cool for
our annual Packages from Home
packing excursion. Those leaving from
Whole Foods (101 and Ray) immediately
ran into significant traffic congestion, the
result of an accident at the 101 and
Elliot. Despite the delay and a couple of
cars taking unplanned sightseeing
detours, everyone managed to get to the
new Packages from Home location, 5643 N.
52nd Ave in Glendale, by our
10:30AM appointment time. The
new facility is much larger, brighter, and
better organized to accomplish this very
worthwhile endeavor.
We were all given instructions and tasks
to accomplish. The center became a flurry of activity as we began sorting items and packing boxes
at a furious pace. This year we included in our boxes a letter expressing our gratitude to the troops
and a CCA group picture. Thank you, Sheryl, for formulating and providing the letters.
The following CCA members were feverishly working: Howard and Sheryl Katz, Guy and Norma
Lombardo, Bob and Barb Bassett, Sandy Duhaime, Pat and Ray Jenkins, Bob and Carol McDougal,
Marc and Kathy Teixeira, Brad Ryan, Gil and Judy Schmidt, Al Yarusso, Jim and Cis Eberst, and
Dave Lott. By the end of our Party at 12:30PM, our group had managed to pack a CCA two-hour
record of 78 boxes. After thanking the staff for allowing us to participate in this very fulfilling
activity, we took a couple of group photos, and departed.
Sixteen of us went for lunch at the Desert Rose Pizza and Gastropub
at 5729 N. 56th Dr. in Glendale. I don’t believe anyone of the group
had previously been to this location. The food was great, the portions
significant, and the staff was very attentive.
Thank you to everyone who participated and I look forward to our next
packing party.

SEVENTEEN-YEAR ODYSSEY By Pam & Bob Swanson & Gary Porter
In 2000, we bought our first blue Corvette (Nassau blue). Of course we wanted a special, clever license plate
to go with the blue car. But, the license plate we wanted was already taken, including all variations of the
same saying. Then in 2010 we bought our second blue Corvette (Jetstream blue). Again we tried to get the
elusive license plate, but again it was taken. Along comes 2014 and we bought our third blue Corvette
(Laguna blue). We tried for the license plate again, with no luck.
In 2015, we planned a driver to Prescott with Jim & Patti Kerber. Our first rest stop was just outside
Wickenburg. When we exited the DQ/gas station - there it was, a Nassau blue 2000 Corvette with OUR plate,
in the parking lot. Turned out to be Gary Porter’s Corvette and he was on the driver with us. We asked him
how he managed to get that license plate, as we had been trying to get it for 15 years. He said it was just
available when he plated his car! Oh well…
In the two years since, we’ve talked to Gary about the license plate
and he told us he had wanted a different license plate than this one,
but it was not available, so he took this license plate instead. He was
told the license plate he wanted was not on a car and that it should be
available after one year. So Bob checked on-line at Service Arizona
twice a month, for a year, waiting for Gary’s license plate choice
to become available. We planned to get it and then trade with
Gary and we both would be happy.
Long story short … when Gary went to renewals available. It still
wasn’t. So Gary just renewed the license plate he had and left. Now,
in his words:
“After I left the MVD, I simply could not accept the explanation I was given as to why my plate choice was not
available. I decided to call the Special Plates Division to inquire why after all this time it still was unavailable.
After all, no one was using it! A very nice woman named Diane said it was still reserved by a local company
who had not yet released it. After our phone conversation, she took it upon herself to call this company and
ask if they were still interested in retaining it, to which they said, NO. She then called me back to tell me the
news and made arrangements for us both to receive our plates.” See the photo below.
We want to thank Gary for staying on top of the MVD. We are just amazed that a state MVD employee took
the extra time and effort to reach out for Gary, which in turn got us the plate we have wanted for 17 years.
BLUBYU was Gary’s original license plate. He wanted BLUEBYU on a Freedom license plate. He got the
license plate he wanted and we ordered BLU BY U on a Freedom license plate. Does this mean all our future
Corvettes will also be blue? Time will tell!!!!

Advice & Secrets:
The best advice anyone ever gave about cooking: “Taste Everything”.
The best advice about cooking is keeping it simple.
To remove food odors from your hands, rub your hands on stainless steel.
Success is read through your recipe and have all of your ingredients prepped and
tools in place before starting to cook.
GOURMET COOKING SCHOOL Hosted by: Barb and Bob Bassett
CCA participants settled into their counter chairs to get the first glimpse of what they were about to create that night.
Keep in mind, several of us were not gourmet cooks, or not cooks at all, but the food paired with various wines were
well within our purview .Classes are hands on.
Barb of course gave us a crash course in wines in general and how best to determine which wines would pair best
with the menu we were about to produce.
The key to this event is the menu which I am preparing to share with you. First of all, we broke into groups with each
group assigned to one part of the menu.
(Our Menu) First Course: Crostini With Fig Jam & Brie—Mixed Greens with Croutons & Fresh Herb Vinaigrette-Served with Santa
Barbara Landing, Riesling 2013.
Entrée: Grilled Rib-eye Steak with Roquefort-Rosemary Butter-Balsamic Glazed Potatoes & onions-Curry Scented
Roasted Vegetables-Served with Black Mountain Vineyard, Merlot 2013.
Dessert: Candied Pear Tart with Pistachios.

ROADRUNNER EVENT CALENDAR
CCA GOVENORS REPORT BY MIKE TERREY
I look forward to the upcoming year and representing CCA with the Road Runner region, it will be fun Corvette Clubs
in the region.
WHY NCCC?
There are many benefits to be a member of The National Council of Corvette Clubs, as we start a new year I would
like to summarize the history and benefits. The National Council of Corvette Clubs, Inc. (NCCC) was founded in the
United States as an all volunteer, non-profit organization in 1959 by a small group of Corvette/enthusiasts. In 2009
we celebrated our 50th Anniversary and look forward to many more years of fellowship. The purpose of NCCC was
(and still is) to promote interest in Corvette ownership and operation, to publish information on the use and opera-
tion of the Corvette and to establish an organized effort to encourage others to participate in the enjoyment con-
nected with the use and ownership of the Corvette-America’s Sports Car!
In the early days, the number of Clubs was rather small with all of them being located East of the Mississippi. Today,
there are about 250 Clubs in 16 Regions both East and West of the Mississippi. The membership in NCCC is com-
prised of more than 19,000 Members and is the largest non-profit, all volunteer Corvette organization in the United
States. The Roadrunner Region of the National council of Corvette Clubs is comprised of 12 clubs located in AZ, NM
and El Paso, Texas with a total of about 900 members.
Some of the Benefits include:
* Events: * Insurance for Club *Member Discounts * Charities and Grants * Annual Convention * Blue Bars official
publication * NCCC Website

BIOSPHERE DRIVER HO S T E D B Y M C D O U G A L L S & L OT T S
We had a chilly morning start as we gathered at McDonald’s on
Riggs Road to head down Route 87. With a leisurely drive on our
sunny morning, 15 Corvettes arrived at the Biosphere in Oracle at
10:00 a.m. Our special guide, Eric, was ready to share the history
and current uses of this amazing environmental research facility.
Gathering outside with an overview of the structures to begin, we
were given the background on the construction and the goals of the
initial project. Then we wandered inside, peering through a tropical
rainforest, looking down on an ocean reef, walking through grass-
lands, and visiting in desert terrain. There are not many places
where all of this can be accomplished in an hour and a half. Eric did
a great job of briefing us on the many accomplishments brought
about by the two-year experiment and subsequent studies.
Wrapping up our visit, lunch was on our schedule. Nonna Maria’s Italian restaurant opened just for our group, and we had a l imitless pizza and salad
buffet. Carol McDougall then brought out her “award-winning” golf balls, and a souvenir prize was won by one of the men and one of the women.
Coincidentally these were won by one couples, guests John and Tina DeCamp.
That was the wrap-up of our scheduled events, but some of us continued on. A group of ten couldn’t resist the attraction of a large piece of pie at the
highly-recommended Oracle Patio Café. We caught the café staff just before closing and got slices of apple, peach, or blueberry pie with ice cream or
whipped cream.
Now that we were really stuffed, we continued on down the road to the Oracle State Park and a visit to the Kannally House. This is a four-story house
from 1930, at the top of the park, with unique architecture.
It was a full day of fun with our club during one of those special, sunny, Arizona winter days.
