On 14 February 2015, President Perlita Tiro was the Guest of Honour at the

inaugural Singapore Youth Interactors Symposium held at the Performing Arts

Theatre, Raffles Institution Years 4-5. Following is an extract of her speech.

Singapore Youth Interactors Symposium 2015 I am much delighted and honoured to be invited to this maiden Singapore Youth Interactors Symposium 2015. My congratulations to the Planning Committee of Raffles Institution for your guts to embark on this Singaporewide Interactors event! Once again, you have proved the leadership of Raffles Institution as an enviable academic institution that brings its students to great heights. And to the other Interact Clubs, thank you for your contribution in making this event a success by your attendance and participation. It is a Herculean task to organise this brand new initiative to get together like-minded Interactors, to share your passion and vision, to learn from experts on what community service is all about, to learn from each other, and to bond with each other. I am aware that you have already been inviting one another for your respective installation events, but today’s event is the biggest and most extensive in a formal atmosphere. Hence, take advantage of the tremendous opportunity to NETWORK with each other. You will never know when you will need each other’s assistance in the future. Today you will hear from several specialists on how to support four streams of the needy, namely, the Children, the Elderly, the Disabled, as well as extending services outside of Singapore, to be covered by PP Jimmy Ooi from our Rotary Club. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to challenge each other in lively debates. These debates will hopefully lead you to develop best practices in each stream of service. You then transform your KNOWLEDGE into meaningful Planning and ACTION and to make an impact in lighting up the world with your service. Elements of Successful Community Service

Passion - is very much reflected in dealing with your fellow volunteers as well as your beneficiaries. Your stamina, your enthusiasm will exude from all your actions.

Love, Care & Concern - pertains to acting from your heart, not just from the head.

Knowledge - Knowledge is what you have already obtained from your past experience in carrying out your projects, from your Teacher Advisers, from your Rotarian Advisers. This will be fortified and expanded by the speakers you will listen to today. In any seminar or training course that you attend, and especially in a large symposium such as this, what you reap depends very much on your input. The more careful you listen and invest and contribute to a discussion, the more extensively you will benefit. Cell phones will have to be fully switched off during the day, so you can concentrate. Whatever you learn here, from your classmates, from fellow Interactors from other schools and from invited speakers, will be with you for a lifetime. These will hopefully form part of your transformation from youth to adulthood, not just for service but life experiences as well. So, do CREATE AN IMPACT, and allow others to create an impact on you. Open your mind and absorb the learning like a sponge, so you can transform yourselves mentally, psychologically, emotionally, socially. Find a buddy from another Club and grow together. Exchange ideas, help each other as you grow. But don’t forget to enjoy and have fun along the way.

Funding - finding resources (primarily money) is crucial to the success of any project. The important issue is setting your goal realistically for every project, to the extent that you have funds required. You might need to scale down, if you don’t reach your targets.

Planning and Goal Setting–Today you will definitely show plenty of enthusiasm and the buzz word PASSION. You will be high! However, without direction, all this hype can lead to frustration. Always keep your goals set in your mind, and be steadfast in trying to achieve them.Planning & Goal setting should really form part and parcel of the rest of your entire life. Goals give a sense of focus, direction, and accomplishment – and add value to everything you do. It is akin to taking a bus, as a simple example. You need to know exactly where you wish to go to identify which bus is appropriate to take, otherwise you will be lost. Or you can be at the centre of Crossroads leading to several directions. If you don’t know where you want to go, any road can take 3 you there. But of course, goals change along the way, based on circumstances that surround you. Hence you also need to be flexible.

Action - You would have heard about the term Analysis-Paralysis. Before making a decision, you can set many alternative goals and examine what is best for you, using different parameters and assumptions. At the end of the day YOU have to decide and take action, or you will not get anywhere.

What is Rotarian? As President of the Rotary Club of Singapore, may I take the opportunity to provide you a bit of Rotary information, which should be a refresher for most of you. If you are hearing these for the first time, ask Cheryl or Jonathan for a copy of my slides for your reference and adoption, whether you eventually become a Rotarian or not. These are principles that 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide live by. Four Way Test – These are the tenets that we as Rotarians and you as mini-Rotarians should follow: Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The Guide to Daily Living – This was authored by our very own PDG Dr Philbert Chin who is right in this room. Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:

First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third: Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far? The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary. In conclusion, I wish to congratulate all of you again who have come to attend this event and I wish you all the best in the respective careers you shall embark on. Who knows, maybe the Prime Minister in the year 2035 might 4 come from among you! Whatever, please do not forget to continue to serve your fellowmen and give back. I always preach that all of us should share our blessings of TIME, TALENT and TREASURE to the less fortunate. What you sow is what you reap. The more good deeds you sow, the more blessings will be bestowed upon you in the future, maybe in a different form, or maybe the next generation might benefit – your kids, your family members. Your good deeds will always be a good investment in your life. Never think of material success as the only measure of your life achievement. You have a whole life ahead of you but for your life to be meaningful, money should only be considered a means for livelihood and should never be the end in itself. As what Winston Churchill has said “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” I hope I have given you some food for thought, maybe for further discussion in your break-up sessions. I wish you great success in this symposium. God bless you all.

A Lively D-3310 “WUP” Day Meeting Dateline: 25 February 2015 Venue: The Pan Pacific Hotel – Ocean 2-5 By: PP Raymon Huang Indeed it was. The setting was good; the fellowship better; the mood best. The whole atmosphere at this 2015 “World Understanding & Peace Day” meeting was upbeat. Our Guest-of-Honour, Professor Kishore Mahbubani, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, was particularly upbeat in his assessment and forecast of the world situation – despite all the turmoil and tension, the suffering and suffocating lives so many live, and the continuing violence and vengeance that go on daily, without any seeming let-up, in so many hot spots around the world. President-Elect and Chairman of theOrganising Committee, Alan Tan, was short and sweet in his Welcome speech – good and to the point. Master of Ceremony, Rtn Andy Mankiewicz did a great job! District Governor Andre Suharto was in his usual element and eloquence when he delivered his piece – touching on and stressing the many similarities existing in different religions and cultures, in particular between Islam and Christianity. As a Muslim himself, he was aghast at the many misconceptions that result in so much problems, and the misinterpretations perpetrated resulting in the dire consequences we read about daily. It was thus incumbent upon Rotary to work even harder to help achieve better understanding and more peace. All present – about 200 Rotarians representing some 23 clubs in the District, together with many Rotaractors and Interactors – enjoyed the evening very much. Our Club had over 50 members and spouses present. All in all, a very good meeting. Professor Kishore’s much-anticipated speech was revealing and so relevant, which, in his words, “would surprise many” present. As I indicated earlier, he was very much upbeat in his analysis of the global situation. He praised Rotary’s on-going efforts in trying to make the world an even better place. Professor Kishore outlined three (3) areas in which he centred his talk –

1) The good news 2) The challenges 3) The solutions (suggested)

The good news: The global economy is spreading prosperity. People are, in fact, living better lives today than at any time, and that we have enjoyed peace more than at any time before. Less people die today from wars than in the past. And in the past few decades, the upliftment of human beings has been unprecedented. The aim is to eradicate “absolute poverty” by 2030. There is better healthcare, education, new knowledge, and social provision. The middle class never had it so good, with rising numbers each year enjoying better lives. The challenges: Among them the rapid rise in the world population. There is too the global financial situation. Areas of serious concern include global warming, diseases, and the deterioration of world geo-politics. Some policies of the West – policies of superiority and such – lead to tensions between power blocks, and tend to weaken lesser

international entities. There is a noticeable slide from competence to incompetence in international management: “the structures of Global governance have not caught up with the spreading prosperity.” The solutions: Our many current problems, apart from natural disasters, are man-made; so they should be resolvable by man. The leading lights in nations of the West could also change and switch their policies and not want to remain “No. 1” all the time. Professor Kishore cited a few examples of how things like voting rights in the United Nations Security Council and the International Monetary Fund are controlled by the West. A fairer distribution would be good. And one of the big “surprise” solutions is “at our doorstep – ASEAN.” ASEAN, with its 600,000 people of such different and diverse civilisations, cultures, races, religions, languages and practices can be both an example and a model of understanding and peace. Professor Kishore stressed that despite all the troubles the world is experiencing in so many places, there is this potential for a new and peaceful global situation, with absolute poverty declining, the middle class “booming”, and people better educated and much more widely travelled. However, “pragmatic and innovative reforms would be needed to meet the many new and modern challenges.” Concluding, he said, “this is the best way to promote understanding and goodwill globally.” He received a standing ovation. It was – this 2015 “World Understanding & Peace Day” Meeting – an evening to remember. About Our Guest OfHonour:

He is truly, by any measure, an outstanding son of Singapore. A scholar, philosopher, thinker, historian, author, diplomat, statement, teacher, and public servant all rolled into one, he has received world recognition and given accolades and awards, too many to list them out here. But a number of “musts” must be mentioned. He was awarded The Public Administration Medal (Gold) by the Singapore Government in 1998; The Foreign Policy Association Medal in New York (2009); listed as “one of the top100 public intellectuals in the world” by the Foreign Policy and Prospect magazine (2005); and as “one of the top 50 individuals” (which list included national Heads of States like Obama,

Wen Jibao and Sarkozy) by the Financial Times (2009); as well as “one of the top world

thinkers” by a British current affairs magazine. Professor Kishore was also described as “the muse of the Asian century” in a tribute as a top global thinker.

WORLD UNDERSTANDING & PEACE DAY - 20 YEARS AGO!

This photograph (courtesy of previous member, PP Dr Peter Wyss, who was host President of the “90 Years Rotary” event) refreshes fond memories of the WUPD celebration held on 23 February 1995 at the Mandarin Hotel, Orchard Road. All Rotarians 90 years and above were specially invited and joined the joint, then 15, Singapore Rotary Club Presidents to the “cake” ceremony (candle blowing). The two sprightly young 90-year-old Rotarians, were our Honorary Members – the late R J Jumabhoy (4th from left) and Yeo TiamSiew (3rd from right). Also in the photo are Hon. Member, the late Tan Sri Dr Tay Teck Eng (centre back) and the Club’s Sergeant-at-Arms, the late K S Mehta (3rd from left). The Guest of Honour and Speaker for the evening was Prime Minister H.E. Mr Hun Sen of Cambodia, where our Club re-opened Rotary the same year (1995).

An Appeal from the President

Have you made your contribution to our Major Project yet? Dear Fellow Rotarians I wish to make a personal appeal to you to make your contribution to our selected Major Project for the year, the Star Shelter? Please note that this is a CLUB INITIATIVE and hence, we traditionally aim for 100% participation to this cause. While we had estimated S$500 as the target amount for each member to contribute to reach our target, you are of course free to give more. Do spread the word around and ask family members and friends and even corporate friends to contribute to this good cause. What a better way to carry out our Corporate Social Responsiblity and take advance now of the THREE TIMES tax deduction (as announced in the recent budget) in the process, as Star Shelter is an IPC. May you be blessed abundantly for your generosity! President Perlita Tiro
