Rocky Mountains – Troop 318 By: Rich Vogler
Seven Boy Scouts along with four adult leaders spend a full week doing High Adventure in the Rocky Mountains the week of July 25, 2016. Each Scout had to earn specific merit badges and be at least 1st class rank to attend this outing. The event has been planned since the beginning of the year with much anticipation. This was an wonderful experience in the beautiful Rocky Mountains where the Scouts enjoyed so many wonderful activities. The activities started with a hiking day trip around Denver including the Capital Building at 5,280 feet, the Denver Mint, and touring the headquarters of REI (a scouters paradise). In addition the trip included white water rafting on the Arkansas River, hiking around Garden of the God's National Park, horse back riding at the Rusty Spurr Ranch, hiking to the top of Grays Peak sitting at 14,267 feet and the final day of bouldering in Rocky Mountain National Park. There were so many wonderful views and memories on this trip it will be hard to top. The scouts were very grateful for churches on our trek who allowed us free shelter and several had showers to enjoy! The Rusty Spurr Horse Ranch

Commissioner’s Corner
By: William Turner Autumn is here, and with it popcorn sales and rechartering season. Please see the article in this newsletter for more information. Also remember to submit your unit’s Journey to Excellence (JTE) forms with your charter renewal packet, even if the unit does not qualify for an award. These forms can help you see how you might work to improve your unit next year. The award is really designed to be used year-round to help improve your unit's performance, not just as a set of check boxes to fill in at the end of the year, and the 2017 scoresheets are already available on the national website. We also have a lot of other things happening in the district. Last month saw the Fishing Derby, which was a success once again. The Fall Camporee will be the middle of October at Camp Belzer, and Bob Vernon and his staff are planning an action-packed program. The new year will see the Klondike Derby in January, the district dinner and Pinewood Derby in March, and the Spring Camporee in April. The commissioner corps is here to help the units serve the scouts. We have some ideas to try to improve roundtables and our service to individual units, but we can always use more ideas. If you have any, or need our help with something, please let me or one of my commissioners know. Yours in Unit Service, William Turner Sugar Creek District Commissioner
Online Recharter
By: William Turner The online recharter system is now live! All unit leaders and
committee chairs should have received an email in the last
week of September with their unit’s access code. The District
Executive, Jessica Hofman, can also obtain the access codes
for all units if someone still needs it.
Every unit should access the online system as soon as possible
to ensure they know how to interact with the system. The unit
should designate one person to do this and serve as the charter
renewal processor for the unit. Please forward that person’s
name, email address, and phone number(s) to our
District Executive, Jessica Hofman
([email protected]), so we can include this person
on any future charter-related communications.
The unit will need to submit its completed charter renewal
packet at one of the charter renewal submission opportunities
listed below. This year we will assign each unit a 15-minute
window to submit its packet at one of the opportunities in each
county, which we hope will make the entire process go much
more smoothly. Please come to the September and October
roundtables to sign up for a time slot!

Fishing Derby 2016 Results
By: Dana Harrison
What a Good day for A Cub Scouts Fishing Derby
The 21th Sugar Creek District Fishing Derby was
held at Frankfort’s City Lagoons on Sept. 10, from
1pm to 4. It was a bright and sunny day just like
every fishing derby should be, but the sun didn’t
come out until 3ish. Our Cub Scouts and their
fishing partner had to sit through some cloudy and
windy hours with line in the water waiting for the
tug, or maybe they just set side by side and talk
about the “good old days”. There were 66 fishing
teams made up of a Cub Scout and his Mom or Dad
or Grandpa or Special Kin. This number was down
from last year by only 1 team, we fear the weather
kept Scouts and Units home safe and dry that day,
but those that did come are real fishermen. The fish
were biting about like last year at this exceptional
group of ponds with more than 1510 fish and 2
turtles caught, and all measured then turned loose
again. So the excitement and interest was high, but
deep down every Scout, he wanted the trophy for the
biggest or most fish caught. The Cub Scouts that did
take home the trophies this year were:
Our new Lion Cub Scouts are
Kindergarteners, and this is the first year for this
rank in Cub Scouting. It is a Pilot Program in
Crossroads of America Council, and only a few of
the packs in Sugar Creek District are welcoming
Lions into their Packs. We only had 5 come out with
their partners. They were from Packs 311, 316, and
357. We hope this first taste of Cub Scouting lights
a fire in their hearts that carries them to Eagle Scout.

District in attendance.
Special thanks to Mayor McBarnes, Jim
Strode, Tammy Carpenter, Tina Stock, and Jason
Earl for their help setting this up and all the
volunteers that help with the care and upkeep here at
the Frankfort Lagoons. We liked this group of
ponds and how well stocked it was, we have already
made arrangements to return for all of Sugar Creek
District Fishing Derbies until the ponds run dry or
we catch all the fish in them.
Also, special thanks to Jessica Hofman,
Marky and Katrina Glass, Jason and Crissy Earl,
(the other lady that helped all day that no one got a
name for) and Wendell Zetterberg Plus everyone
else for their help this year with the record keeping
and book work. And thanks to our District Ex,
Jessica Hofman, for coming out and diving right
into the middle of things. A very special thanks to
all the Boy Scouts from Troop 311; Quinton Cline,
Josh Russell, Dalton Edwards, Kage Riley, Brendan
Watkins. and Craig Allen that came out and helped,
we really appreciate the great work they offered, and
the Scouting spirit they show the younger Cub
Scouts. Special thanks to U-Save Bait Shop and Carl
for being our official Bait Shop provider for the
event. We want to thank Ribbons by Sheryl Phillips,
The Athletic Annex for the fine trophies and
Emblem Enterprise for our “fishy” Patches. By the
way, any ribbons or trophies not picked up will be at
the District Roundtable in October.
This was our 21st Sugar Creek District
Fishing Derby, 18 1/2 years of sun shine and good
memories, two 1/2 years of wet and cloudy days and
good memories; the District hopes that next years
derby will bring all these Cub Scouts and their
families back, along with all their New Scouting
friends who have joined the Boy Scout family, to
catch all the old fish caught this year and all their
relatives. Next years Sugar Creek Fishing Derby,
Celebrating the 22st year of Sugar Creek District’s
Fishing Derby, will be Held at the Frankfort
Lagoons on September 9, 2017, weather permitting.
If you have nothing planned for that day, and
are not going to be bringing a Cub Scout to fish
with, come on out and help us with the 2017 Fishing
Derby. We can always use the help. And if your son
has crossed over into Boy Scouting and would like
to Pay back the District by coming out and helping,
he can earn community service time helping at the
derby. Everyone wins.

Boy Scouts of America you can contact the
