PEOPLE BECAMENEW MEMBERS

We began this ministry year with an overwhelming passion to bring the presence of Christ to our neighborhoods and the world. We couldn’t be more pleased with what we have seen Christ do through you.

Where the presence of Christ is, there is kindness and compassion for those living around us and those who live around the world. Everywhere the presence of Christ is experienced, good things happen. We began the year on a mission to be the presence of Christ and people like the Watson family did just that.

Kevin and Laura Watson have been members of Oak Hills Church for a few years and when they heard the call to be Jesus in their neighborhood, they chose to act upon it. They knew it could be easy to get lost and feel disconnected attending a large church, so connecting with neighbors just made sense.

“We felt like getting to know our neighbors – not just waving at them when we drive by, but establishing personal relationships with the people around us - is important. Really talking and listening to others, getting their “back story,” what makes them who they are, where they came from, and learning the joys and struggles in their lives will hopefully allow us to be a part of their lives.” Kevin and Laura, along with hundreds of other Oak Hills members, have stepped up as leaders in their neighborhood and really strive to be Christ to their neighbors.

We are the Body of Christ, and through us God brings good things to people. His Spirit is moving in you and we are encouraged and excited to see the presence of Christ spreading. Whether you are caring for people in your neighborhood, serving alongside one of our 26 local partners, or sharing the Gospel around the world, we are grateful for what God is doing through you.

Each year, Manos de Cristo, or “Hands of Christ,” blesses hundreds of children that live in highly impoverished countries. This is our 14th season across all campuses of sharing this gift and expression of love and hope beyond our doors at Oak Hills Church.

Last year, Manos de Cristo reached new villages in El Salvador where we found extremely poor children in a place known as Jardín del Eden – Garden of Eden. This group of children walks monthly from their small cardboard homes to a hut in the center of the village to hear a Bible story, sing songs of praise to Jesus, play games, and when available, enjoy a snack.

Many times they are given a cupcake with a happy face as a snack and it no

doubt puts a smile on their face – this ministry is now known as “Caritas Felices,” or “Happy Faces!”

This all campus service project, prepared annually by our Oak Hills families, not only blesses needy children in El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Mexico, but also blesses our own children as they learn the value and importance of serving others, especially the less fortunate. The opportunity it creates for our OHC families to serve on a Manos de Cristo Team and deliver the gifts to one of these countries is an added blessing. As I watched your shoebox gifts bring so much joy to these happy faces, their tender expressions of gratitude were immediately etched on my heart, and I remember them in prayer every day.

Again this year, it will take the whole church to reach our overall goal of 3,000 shoebox gifts. We are asking each person to select an age group and make a box specific to a boy or girl. Any age is great. The biggest need is for boys and girls age 10-12 and 13-15.

The letters and pictures included in each shoebox are one of the most important pieces of your gift because of the message of hope they convey to each child’s heart, reminding them that someone loves them and is praying for them.

This is an opportunity for whole families, neighborhoods, and communities to serve together. Shoeboxes are due back the weekend of October 25 and 26.

A BOX FOR PERLABy Daniel Gertson

A sleek, shiny jet cruises down the runway. A big, red van tumbles along a bumpy, washed-out road. These are trips that have been made many times before, but this time, they’re carrying a simple shoebox that will tie the lives of three girls together forever.

Gopal, Michelle, Jasmine (Jazzy), and Desirae (Desi) Singh knew they wanted to pack a Manos de Cristo box when the announcement came one Sunday at their North Central campus. However, they didn’t know just what God had in store.

When I approached them about documenting the journey of their box, they jumped at the idea — but not without some reservations.

“I didn’t really understand it at first, but I thought it would be cool to see where it goes,” says Jazzy. Her dad, Gopal, adds, “Seeing the journey from the box’s perspective would be really cool. It’s amazing to think about how far it goes.”

After picking up their box, they got down to it. They wrapped it, bought all the gifts to fill it, wrote a note, and Jazzy even drew a picture of their family and placed it inside. When the time came to take the box back to North Central, they were excited.

“Before, you kind of drop off the box and maybe pray for the child when you think about them. But this time, we were going to get to see the whole journey,” says mom, Michelle.

The Singh’s box joined more than 150 other boxes to make

the trek to the children God had in mind. For Jazzy and Desi’s box, that child was a girl named Perla.

“I thought there’d be a lot more dirt,” says Desi. “I knew it was going to a girl, but I didn’t know what her place would be like.”

“Seeing her and knowing her name makes it easier to keep her in mind and add her to our prayers,” says mom. Jazzy adds, “It makes me feel good to know I was able to help someone else.”

Now, the miles, different languages, and contrasting cultures don’t seem like they’re keeping Perla and the Singh girls that far apart.

“It’d be so cool to go there and meet her!”

From the day the Singh family picked up their shoebox to the day it was delivered to Perla, you can follow the story of this Manos de Cristos box at:

It’s the age of the coming job wars. Many are out of work, underemployed, or working outside of their desired field. Good jobs are hard to find, and sometimes even harder to keep. All this talk about work, jobs, and the economic future of America has left us wondering - what does God have to say about work?

Beginning in September, Senior Minister Randy Frazee will point us to scripture and help us understand God’s view of work. We’ll explore the creation of work, the calling of career, how to make a difference in our workplace, how to raise kids to be good workers, and how to be Christ-like business leaders.

As we learn what God has to say about work over these 12-weeks, we’ll also discuss how the Church globally, and

specifically Oak Hills Church, can unite to help our community of faith in their current job needs.

This fall, come prepared to be challenged, be inspired and be invested in God’s business of work!

What does it mean to truly be a disciple of Christ? What does a journey toward a relationship with God look like? How can we “be Jesus” to those around us when we’re struggling just to be ourselves?

The Christian walk can often seem confusing, discouraging, and overwhelming. At times it can even seem mundane. But what if we’re missing something? What if our quiet longings and discontent are not what God intended? What if there is so much more?

In August, Senior Minister Randy Frazee and Minister of Ministry Development Greg Hawkins will lead us on a three week journey toward understanding spiritual formation. We’ll discover the key to spiritual growth and learn how the pursuit of intimacy with Christ will change how we live.

If you’re ready to move into a new era in your faith and grow your relationship with God, you won’t want to miss this series beginning the weekend of August 9th.

“Whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those in the family of faith.”

-Galatians 6:10

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.”

-G.K. Chesterton, What’s Wrong with the World

This Milestone includes a special monthly class (September – April) for our 5th grade students, providing a series of lessons and activities which affirm and teach the importance of being a light for Jesus. Students are reminded of the love that comes from Jesus, their parents, and their church. Parents attend a monthly class during the same hour that serves to encourage and equip them in their role as spiritual leaders of their children. The Agape Trail Milestone culminates with a three-day retreat (in April) reinforcing the teachings and bringing students and parents closer together in the love and support of family and friends.
