Unfortunately, I did not pursue it until moving to the Valley in 2011. Within a few weeks of joining CrossFit Chaparral, it was clear that coaching was in my future. Once I received my CrossFit Level-1 Certification, I realized that I had just touched the surface of all there is to learn about CrossFit. Since then I've taken a number of other courses, including my CrossFit Kids certification. Part of my motivation for taking the CrossFit Kids Certification was so that I could share CrossFit more effectively with my own three kids! As a life long athlete, I have always searched for a better, more efficient way to grow stronger, faster and fitter. CrossFit is the answer I wish I had when I was younger. This is partly why I am so passionate about sharing it with adults and kids. ANNOUNCING: CROSSFIT KIDSCoach Will Burkhart talks about how he found CrossFit, and his passion for coaching

time I heard about CrossFit was through a friend about ten years ago.  CrossFit formed the basis of his training program for a “seven summits bid,” a bid to climb the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. Unfortunately, I did not pursue it until moving to the Valley in 2011. After we settled into our new home, I enrolled in some CrossFit Intro classes at another CrossFit box, and was rather taken aback by their high pricing. This kind of turned me off to the program.  Then last summer, I met Nick through a movie project, and he told me about CrossFit Chaparral.  Hearing his passion was all it took! Within a few weeks of joining CrossFit Chaparral, it was clear that coaching was in my future.  Once I received my CrossFit

Level-1 Certification, I realized that I had just touched the surface of all there is to learn about CrossFit. For those of us who are older, it is never too late to start - and for kids, it is a gift they will have for the rest of their lives!

I was in Asia not long ago, and I stopped to pose for a picture (above, right). The sun was in my eyes, and my eyes are closed in the photo. Oops.

And yet, the photo still has meaning. It serves as proof to my wife that I was actually working and not partying in the Caribbean, and more importantly it reminds me of an encounter I had with our Asian army counterparts that same night. Here’s what happened.

I was still catching my breath after one of my Chaplain-sponsored events, “The Hour of Power,” which was a CrossFit WOD followed by a 5-minute story-retelling of a parable of Jesus. A soldier from our host-country approached me with a question: “Why do you do this?”

He was not asking, “Why do you CrossFit?” He was asking why I combined faith with fitness. I guess he was

used to church being done inside an old building or something.

My mind immediately went to Margaret Halsey, an author and cultural critic: “Life punishes those who compartmentalize it.” One of the dominant reasons CrossFit is so successful is

because it works best when it is integrated into your entire life. Your food choices, your activity

choices, your friend choices. Like my faith, CrossFit works best when it is merged, not compartmentalized, with the rest of my life.
