Product of the USA SS950/0412/TAS

The seal of certified Swedish Red bulls proven in Sweden with extensive emphasis on fertility, somatic cell count, longevity, and calving ease. If they are “real” Swedish Red bulls they will carry this trademarked logo. All bulls carrying this seal are available in the USA from your Select Sires representative.

The production traits genetic evaluations for the Swedish Red and Red Dane are April 2012 Interbull MACE proofs based on the U.S. Ayrshire genetic base. The Montbeliarde genetic evaluations are February 2012 French evaluations processed by INRA (French Agronomic Research Institute). All type trait infor-mation is on an in-country basis, with summarization equal to their production dates.

DAUGHTER FERTILITY Swedish Red – Fertility data on sires’ daughters expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 10 standard deviation. Higher values are favorable. Montbeliarde – Fertility data on sires’ daughters expressed around a mean of 0 with a +/- 1 standard deviation. Higher values are favorable. Red Dane – Fertility data on sires’ daughters expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 10 standard deviation. Higher values are favorable.

EXPLANATION OF TRAITS

Phone: (800) 640-2855 www.creativegeneticsofca.com

CALVING EASE (INDEX) Swedish Red – Expression of the vitality of the calf at birth expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 10 standard deviation. Calving Index = Calving Ease + Calf Viability. Higher values are favorable. Montbeliarde – Percentage of easy calvings on first parity cows. Greater than (>) 89 percent means easy calving sire and less than (<) 86 percent means not recommended for use on heifers. Danish Red – (Birth Index) - The breeding value describing the ability of sires to breed easy born and live born calves at first parity expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 10 standard deviation. Higher values are favorable.

UDDER, FEET & LEG INDEX, LINEAR TYPE TRAITS Swedish Red – Compilation of the linear type traits expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 10 standard deviation. Montbeliarde – Compilation of the linear type traits expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 12 standard deviation. Red Dane – Compilation of linear type traits expressed around a mean of 100 and a +/- 10 standard deviation.

PROCROSS is the proven crossbreeding program used by progressive dairy farmers in the U.S., Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal and around the world. The combina-tion of Swedish Red, Montbeliarde and Holstein has proven to be the most profi table crossbreeding program because you get the maximum hybrid vigor on top of the high performance of these three breeds. The Swedish Red calve easily, are highly fertile and are medium sized, high-producing cows with excellent udder health. The Montbeliarde breed is a 100 percent dairy breed producing high-quality protein. Montbeliardes are known for outstanding feet and legs, healthy udders and have adapted body condition that ensures high fertility. Holsteins are world renown for milk production and udder conformation. HETEROSISThe effects of heterosis are the opposite of inbreeding depression. Research indicates that heterosis is great for traits like vitality, fertility, health and survival allowing higher production than parent average. The additive breed effects are important in crossbreed-ing as well as in all breeding. The heterosis is an extra benefi t on top of the parent aver-age. So, one critical point to remember is that you should always use the best bulls in the breeds. A crossbreeding program needs to be well planned and organized to produce benefi ts. PROCROSS is the combination of three unrelated, competitive breeds all with effi cient breed improvement programs.

WHY THREE BREEDS?Capturing and sustaining heterosis is the key to an effi cient crossbreeding program. Once you have gotten used to the extra bonus of heterosis, you do not want it to drop below 75 percent. For two-breed crisscrossing, the extent of heterosis drops 50 percent in the second generation - leveling off at 67 percent. A system of four breeds results in a high heterosis on average, but contribution of each individual breed is too diluted. A three-breed rotation is the optimum and results in average heterosis of 86 percent.

GETTING STARTEDStart by breeding your Holsteins to Swedish Red sires. In a pure Holstein herd, the extreme calving ease of the Swedish Red bulls will give heifers an extra guarantee to calve safely. Montbeliarde semen should be used on all Swedish Red/Holstein heifers and cows. A color tagging system is a great way to keep track of the breeding rotation. It is important to strictly follow the same order for each breed in the rotation, enhancing hybrid vigor. Assigning a different color tag for each breed makes it easy to know what breed to use when inseminating the animal.

UTILIZING THE PROCROSS WILL:• Maintain or increase your herd’s solids production

• Result in more pregnant cows Swedish Red and Montbeliarde crosses are known for their higher fertility.

• Provide easier calving Swedish Red and Montbeliarde crosses have outstanding maternal calving ability due to strong selection for decades. Swedish Red is an ideal option for heifers - averaging only 5.5% diffi cult births.

• Cut your total costs Research has shown a slight decrease in milk volume from the PROCROSS animals, while maintaining components and increasing milk quality. Easier calvings in all cases require less vet costs. The crosses offer clear superiority in terms of fertility, survival and ability to calve a second time.

• Increase your profi ts “Crossbreeding cows makes more profi t” (+25%). Reported by the California Cost of Production Annual 2007
