telecommunicationsservicesUsageoftheexistingbackbonenetworkofpublicandprivatepowertransmissioncompanies/[Indian]Railways/GAIL,ONGCetc.shallbeallowedimmediatelyfornationallongdistancedatacommunicationandfromJanuary1,2000fornationallongdistancevoicecommunications.

• In2001,RailTel wasformedasanindependent,wholly-ownedsubsidiaryofIR:• GoalwastomodernizeandexpandthecurrentIRnetworkandcommercializeit• AllowedIRtofocusonrailoperations• Onformation,IRassignedanirrevocablerighttouserightsofwayfor

telecommunications• RailTel isviewedasasuccessduelargelytotheGovernment’sactionstoencourage

infrastructuresharing.

• Startingin2005,RailTel beganofferingservicestoothercustomers,suchas:• virtualprivatenetworkservices• darkfiberleasingtocabletelevisionoperators• datacenterandconsultancyservicestoenterprises

• RailTel creditsitssuccessinparttoitsindependencefromIR,allowingittofocusentirelyonitstelecommunicationsbusinesswithitsownsalesandmarketingefforts.
