What’s On 9-10
12 MARCH 2018
Lex, Kai, Lucy, Gelo, James and Rachael are in Yellow class this year. It has been a busy but wonderful start to the year. This term our theme is ‘ Under the Sea’ and so far we have been looking at the different plants and animals that live in the ocean. Our friends from Newington College visit us on Monday afternoons and we have been doing lots of interesting under the sea activities with them.
This is the final week of swim scheme and we have very much enjoyed being able to swim everyday. We have all been trying our best and it has been great to see that everyone listening and being safe in the pool. We have been working on our floating, blowing bubbles, diving, freestyle and back stroke. It has been great practice for our upcoming swimming carnival.
We join our friends from Blue class on Wednesdays where we break into two groups. One group goes to Willoughby Public for integration and the other group stays at school and does lots of fun activities together.
Next Wednesday is Harmony Day. Harmony Day is a national observance that celebrates Australia’s cultural, linguistic and religious diversity on March 21 every year. This year we will be celebrating Harmony Day here at Cromehurst with a special assembly to reinforce the message that “everyone belongs”, along with the importance of inclusiveness which is a high priority at our school. Please read the notice later in this edition regarding this event. An additional notice will be sent home in your child’s communication book this week.

Principal’s Message Welcome to Week 7
Over the last two weeks, we have
been focusing on our sensory
garden as part of our Live Life
Well program and Fruit &
Vegetable month. We participated
in “the Big Crunch” with a special
assembly where all of our
students crunched carrots at a
designated time. Across NSW
47,920 students participated in
this event which is amazing. Our
students have been participating
in a range of activities in the
sensory garden enjoying learning
about plants as well as tending
the plants. Photos of this along
with more information appear later
in this edition.
As we pass the halfway mark of
this term, I would like to remind
parents about our Canteen
program which operates on
Wednesdays. In addition to
providing sandwiches for students
and staff, it is also part of our
secondary students’ program
where they learn to prepare
ingredients for the sandwiches,
construct the sandwiches, read
the orders and count the money.
Although the menu is limited, it is
healthy and very good value for
money. Please check the menu
and price list later in the
newsletter and consider giving
yourself a break from making your
child’s lunch for one day per
week.
Unfortunately, there appears to be
a stomach virus going around our
school (and the community). Can
you please ensure that the
emergency contact numbers you
have provided us are current at all
times as it is distressing for
students to be ill at school and
unsafe for other students as
viruses such as these are very
contagious and some of our
students are very susceptible due
to issues with their immune
systems. It is the policy of the
Department that students who
become unwell at school are best
transferred to the care of a parent/
carer. In addition, it is the policy of
the Assisted Travel Unit that
students who are obviously very ill
will not be transported if they
believe the illness has the
potential to impact on the health,
wellbeing and safety of any
individual on the transport run
including the driver and support
officer. In these circumstances
you will be contacted to collect
your child from school making the
need for reliable and accurate
contact numbers essential. More
information on the Department’s
policy regarding student health
can be found at https://
education.nsw.gov.au/policy-
library/policies/student-health-in-

and-consolidation-of-policy?

Next Wednesday is Harmony
Day. Harmony Day is a national
observance that celebrates
Australia’s cultural, linguistic and
religious diversity on March 21
every year. This year we will be
celebrating Harmony Day here at
Cromehurst with a special
assembly to reinforce the
message that “everyone belongs”,
along with the importance of
inclusiveness which is a high
priority at our school. Please read
the notice later in this edition
regarding this event. An additional

Art & Music News PAGE 3
The students at Cromehurst have had a very industrious start to Term 1. Both Primary and Secondary classes have been busy creating paper chain dolls in Art lessons for Harmony Day. Secondary classes have been studying the curriculum topic of ‘Multicultural Australia’ so the other art works they have been creating have also been very relevant to the theme of Harmony Day.
Primary students have been working on the theme of ‘Under the Sea’ and they have created sharks, crabs and many other sea creatures.
In Music, Secondary students have been very involved in drumming and body percussion using their
hands. Primary students have been using a variety of percussion instruments to accompany their songs
about ‘Under the Sea’ as well as performing dances pretending to be a variety of underwater creatures.

The Live Life Well team would like to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in the Big Crunch
and for your donations to our Sensory Garden! Across NSW 47,920 people participated in the Big Crunch
and we are thrilled that Cromehurst was part of this great initiative. The whole school crunched on carrots
during our week 5 assembly and busted out lots of dance moves to the ‘Big Crunch’ song. During the last
week all classes have been participating in a variety of fun and hands on experiences in our sensory
garden, including a vegetable discovery, sorting fruit and vegetables and planting lettuce. We look
forward to the lettuce being used by the fabulous canteen team!
