Sheep round up: 1940
Traditional Fabric Making/WeavingYou would have noticed the water wheel on the ground floor at Egair Moel Mill today in St. Fagans. The river was integral to the wollen mills.
The fast flowing river would have powered the machines.
The soft water would have washed the finished product.
The rivers would run in the colour the mill had been dyeing that day! The river would have been blue, red, purple, orange…
The river would also have been used to wash the sheep.
The sheep would have been washed 3 times before shearing. Farmers in coracles would dunk the sheep in the water with their oars!
Esgair Moel Mill
Today you saw the Esgair Moel Mill working. You saw the hand looms and the spinning jack and water wheel.
Traditionally, a nursing shawl would have been made and flannel shirts used mostly by farmers to keep them cool in warm weather, Welsh costumes, woollen clothes, blankets, rugs, tapestry throws and scarves.
