Pattern Crochet Hat (Beanie OR Sleeping Hat) 2009

CROCHET HAT

(Beanie OR Sleeping Hat)

by Barbara Summers

www.crocknit.com

This pattern is another one of my creations

made on the spur of the moment because I

needed something to keep my head warm

whilst sleeping because my sinuses where

being very sensitive to the movement of cold

air in the room. Don’t laugh – I am serious.

I have a collection of different hats (beanies)

made just for wearing to bed. All are made

using a 4ply natural fibre yarn, such as

cotton, bamboo or baby wool.

Most of my creations and designs are made

with the explicit purpose of having a play and

seeing how much fun I can have with it. YOU

can PLAY and have FUN with this pattern too.

You can also check MYO for more simple fun

things to make.

I used 4ply 100% Australian Soft Cotton and a

4.5mm hook. But you can also make this hat

with 8ply if you wish. Simply adapt the

pattern to the yarn you are using.

For a softer texture to your hat use a hook half

or one size larger than specified on the yarn

label. OR if you are a loose crocheter you may

wish to use a hook size smaller or as specified

on the yarn label. The choice is always yours.

Before you begin:

read through the pattern to the end

check head size

decide what size hat you are going to make – a snug fit OR loose fit (snug fit is recommended for sleeping in)

select yarn and hook size

crochet a swatch 10cm by 5cm in sc

count the number of stitches

calculate how many stitches you will

need to fit the head circumference.

Here’s the pattern:

Abbreviations:

Rnd = round; ch = chain; sc = single crochet;

dc = double crochet; st or sts = stitch or

stitches; sl st = slip stitch; MC = main colour;

CC = contrast colour.

Ch3, join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1:

Ch1, 2sc in each st (6sts), join with sl st.

Rnd 2:

Same as Rnd 1 (12sts)

Rnd 3:

Ch3, 2dc in every st to end, join with sl st in

top of Ch3 (24sts)

Rnd 4:

Ch3, *2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next st, repeat from

* to end, join with sl st in top of Ch3 (36sts)

Rnd 5:

Ch3, 1dc in every st to end, join with sl st in

top of C3.

Rnd 6:

Ch3, *2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 2 sts, repeat

from * to end, join with sl st in top of Ch3.

Rnd 7, 8, 9:

Same as Rnd 6 however you will be increasing

the number of 1dc after 2dc - as follows:

2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 3 sts; repeat.

2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 4 sts; repeat.

2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 5 sts; repeat.

continue in this manner until you have enough

stitches to match the circumference of the hat

you wish to make. (this pattern uses 84sts in

total)

Special Note: This is where you can change

yarn colour and introduce a stripped pattern

to your hat OR change colour for the length of

the hat and then finish the last 2-3 rows with

same colour as crown of hat.

Rnd 10: CHANGE TO MC

Ch1, sc into back loop of every st to end, join

with sl st.

Rnd 11: #

Ch1, sc in every st to end, join with sl st.

Rnd 12:

Ch3, 1dc in every st to end, join with sl st in

top of Ch3.

Rnd 13:

Ch1, sc in every st to end, join with sl st. ##

Repeat from # to ## 6 times, OR until desired

length is achieved.

Rnd 14:

Ch1, sc in every st to end, join with sl st.

Rnd 15: CHANGE TO CC.

Ch1, sc into back loop of every st to end, join

with sl st.

Rnd 16, 17, 18:

Same as Rnd 15.

Rnd 19:

Ch1, Crab Stitch (reverse crochet) to end, join

with sl st.

Finish and hide ends.

Note about photos shown: Only photos available of this hat were taken after the hat was worn for six months. Please accept my humble apologies for it looking a bit worn.
