CROCHET HAT
(Beanie OR Sleeping Hat)

This pattern is another one of my creations
made on the spur of the moment because I
needed something to keep my head warm
whilst sleeping because my sinuses where
being very sensitive to the movement of cold
air in the room. Don’t laugh – I am serious.
I have a collection of different hats (beanies)
made just for wearing to bed. All are made
using a 4ply natural fibre yarn, such as
cotton, bamboo or baby wool.
Most of my creations and designs are made
with the explicit purpose of having a play and
seeing how much fun I can have with it. YOU
can PLAY and have FUN with this pattern too.
You can also check MYO for more simple fun
things to make.
I used 4ply 100% Australian Soft Cotton and a
4.5mm hook. But you can also make this hat
with 8ply if you wish. Simply adapt the
pattern to the yarn you are using.
For a softer texture to your hat use a hook half
or one size larger than specified on the yarn
label. OR if you are a loose crocheter you may
wish to use a hook size smaller or as specified
on the yarn label. The choice is always yours.
Before you begin:
read through the pattern to the end
check head size
decide what size hat you are going to make – a snug fit OR loose fit (snug fit is recommended for sleeping in)
select yarn and hook size
crochet a swatch 10cm by 5cm in sc
count the number of stitches
calculate how many stitches you will
need to fit the head circumference.
Here’s the pattern:
Abbreviations:
Rnd = round; ch = chain; sc = single crochet;
dc = double crochet; st or sts = stitch or
stitches; sl st = slip stitch; MC = main colour;
CC = contrast colour.
Ch3, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1:
Ch1, 2sc in each st (6sts), join with sl st.
Rnd 2:
Same as Rnd 1 (12sts)
Rnd 3:
Ch3, 2dc in every st to end, join with sl st in
top of Ch3 (24sts)

the number of 1dc after 2dc - as follows:

2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 4 sts; repeat.
2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 5 sts; repeat.
continue in this manner until you have enough
stitches to match the circumference of the hat
you wish to make. (this pattern uses 84sts in
total)
Special Note: This is where you can change
yarn colour and introduce a stripped pattern
to your hat OR change colour for the length of

same colour as crown of hat.
