Evans music is at best copied by most pianists and copied successfully by even fewer. Introspective and evocative single note lines that are as organic as they are cinematic in the full presentation of Evans work. There will never be another Bill Evans so Pasqua decided to not reinvent but do more of a musical "what if ?" on this legend by recording selected Evans tunes and a couple that are closely associated with Evans as artistic interpretations of playing a duet with himself on one piano over two channels. While this is every record labels dream in terms of saving money there are but a handful of modern contemporary pianists with the talents to pull off such an undertaking. Pasqua delivers the goods and then some by examining the possibilities of how these tunes may have evolved and developed later had Evans life not been tragically cut short. An ironic musical sense of humor is displayed with Pasqua's take on "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" a musical tip of the cap if you will to his own love for America's past time. The Evans harmonic development of his tunes are carried off here with great respect but on the tune "Gloria's Step" there is a far more sweeping take than what Evans may have ever intended and Pasqua self penned composition "Grace" is a subtle tune embracing a melancholy that allows for a perfect fit in this most eclectic of recordings. Normally a recording of this nature would have the potential of sonic train wreck written all over it but not here. Pasqua's career has run the gamut of co-composing the CBS Evening News theme to recording two albums with Bob Dylan. Currently chair of Jazz Studies, Associate Professor, at the University of Southern California, Pasqua has the gift to take this musical exploratory of Bill Evans and related work and transform the release into something truly special. @@CCrriittiiccaallJJaazzzz GGooeess GGlloobbaall!!
