Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Market Forecast 2014-2024: Cybersecurity, Perimeter Security, Surveillance, Access Control & Personnel

3.5 Global Critical Infrastructure Protection Market Drivers

Between 2014 and 2024 the global critical infrastructure protection market will be driven by a range

of factors ranging from an increase in the development of national infrastructure, the continued

threat of terrorism, local insurgencies, and environmental activists, as well as the rise in

prominence of oil and gas assets the world over. These drivers will reinforce other pre-existing

developments in the market, such as the increasing modernisation of many developing nations, in

addition to the heightened demand being placed upon many essential utility sectors.

It is cybersecurity however that will continue to be the greatest driver for the global market. For

although some national authorities and utilities operators continue to negate the perceived scope

of the challenge aligned against them, or at least consider it less pressing physical threats, a

majority of national organisations and private authorities are looking to keep up with digital threat

groups that are ever changing, and frequently outpacing the defences built to contain them.

Certainly, in recent years a wide array of security incidents have ensured that the threat

environment is no longer one in which solely have to account for resource theft, vandalism,

sabotage, and terrorism. Of course these issues are still of paramount concern, especially in

countries with extended amounts of vulnerable infrastructure like pipelines, or in areas with highly

sensitive assets such as nuclear power stations or government headquarters. Yet as a result of the

increasing digitalisation and automation of modern societies, so called ‘digital pearl harbours’ are

set to become viewed with the same amount of trepidation as another Chernobyl or Fukushima

incident.

Presently, a multitude of actors are making headway to counter against what has up to this point

been the Achilles heel of the critical infrastructure. Operating technologies and corporate

technologies alike are being secured, both through typical security measures such as firewalls and

filters, but also through security hardware ingrained from day one within systems and processors

themselves. Governments have also been keen to plug what has been determined as a key

security gap, and to this end, computer emergency response teams, critical information

infrastructure centres, and national cybersecurity initiatives have been brought to bear all over the

world. Increases in tensions in key regions such as the Middle East, and Asia Pacific have only

reinforced these government level efforts, with national authorities and military alliances becoming

rapidly aware of the need to secure the defences of the home front as much as the frontline.

Accordingly, with many nations modernising what infrastructure they already possess, and others

building the infrastructure that they need, the critical infrastructure protection market is one which is

set to only grow in importance over the forecast period. Both physical and cyber threats will drive

any accompanying security solutions, with government regulations reinforcing what many private

operators are already aware of.
