CRISTO ASCESO NEI CIELI REGNA ALLA DESTRA DEL PADRE

CELEBRARE l’Ascensione del Signore Gesù ci fa riflettere sul significato che questo mistero ha nella storia della salvezza. Certamente per il Signore Gesù esso manifesta il termine della sua permanenza tra gli uomini, unita alla sua glorificazione alla destra del Padre per regnare con lui sul cielo e sulla terra. «Il suo regno non avrà fine » (Credo Niceno-Costantinopolitano) ed egli eserciterà dal cielo la sua azione benefica e salvatrice sull’umanità, per mezzo dello Spirito Santo (I Lettura). Per ciascuno degli apostoli, che saranno poi maggiormente potenziati in questo dallo Spirito alla Pentecoste, l’Ascensione determina la loro missione di testimoni del Risorto (Vangelo). Per noi cristiani, infine, l’Ascensione ha la funzione di aprirci alla speranza nella vita futura con Dio e di infonderci il coraggio dell’annuncio al mondo intero per evangelizzarlo ed unirlo in una sola fede, un solo battesimo, un solo Dio e Padre. Gesù che ascende al Cielo porta con sé quanti accolgono il suo Regno (II Lettura), rendendo così “accessibile” all’umanità la casa del Padre, ove si sperimentano in eterno la vita e la felicità di Dio. ASCENSION OF THE LORD

On this Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, the Church pays special attention to communication in our world, and encourages us to spread the good news of God’s saving grace, revealed in Jesus and made present through the power of the Holy Spirit. The accounts of the ascension in both Acts and Mark entrust us, as Jesus himself entrusted the eleven, to share the good news. The sacraments equip us wonderfully for the task of witnessing to the “whole of creation”. In Baptism, we became light to the world. In confirmation, we received the gifts of the Holy Spirit that empower us to be the Christ-bearers of unity. And through the celebration of the Eucharist, we are nourished and strengthened for our mission. Communicating the good news is a work in progress. There has never been a time in history when people did not need the news of salvation. When much of the communication around us tears down rather than builds up, we have the opportunity to build bridges through our encounters with others. Jesus is the benchmark for all of our communications. Following his example, may our lives communicate God’s love and mercy and be a sign of hope to the world. Louise McEwan

Alberta March for Life in Edmonton Thousands participated in the Annual Alberta March for Life May 10 through the streets of Edmonton to the Legislature Grounds. Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith said he understands women who feel alone and grieve during their pregnancy, as well as women who regret having had an abortion. “Yet, in the midst of it all, this grief does not turn to despair in our own lives, because we live the promise of Jesus himself, that this — even these terrible situations — can be for God an instrument for good,” said Smith during Mass before the start of the march.

New feast day: Mary, Mother of the Church

The Catholic Church doesn’t often add new celebrations to its pretty full liturgical calendar, but this year’s new feast day, Mary, Mother of the Church on May 21, has Catholics gearing up to mark the day or at least think a little more about Mary.

The new feast day, which will be celebrated annually the day after Pentecost, was announced in a March 3rd decree by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.

“I think Pope Francis recognizes the importance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her association with the Apostles and Christ, and the feast of Pentecost,” says Father Paul Kavanagh, director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Archdiocese.

The Archbishop asks us all to make Scripture reading a part of our daily lives. That's not always easy, but a new smartphone app from Novalis can make it pretty effortless.

The Living With Christ Prayer app is available free of charge on iPhone and Android devices. In addition to the daily Mass readings from the Canadian lectionary, the app offers collections of daily prayers, daily meditations with attractive images, and a liturgical calendar with feast and saints’ days. If you like, it will even send you reminders to take time out to pray!
