The bells rang out across Shildon on Saturday 2nd May, for the wedding of Zanya Bailey and Luke Metcalf. What the guests didn’t know as they settled to wait for the bride was that there was something special about the ringing. For the first time in over thirty years every ringer in the tower was from Shildon, each one a part of the steadily growing Shildon bell ringing band. With the majority of the ringers being under 17 years-old, the eight bells were not only being rung, but rung by young women learning an ancient skill. Trevor Thompson, (Tower captain) commented, “This band is the youngest in the county and are becoming a legend in their own right, young people giving their time to their community week after week.”Revd. David added, “Weddings are always a delight and Luke and Zanya’s was both beautiful and poignant.

“The bells ringing out tell the whole town that here are a couple in love, and what more wonderful thing

is there to celebrate than love, so why not ring it out as loudly and happily as possible!”

Shildon Chamber of Trade recently held an Easter Window Competition for businesses in the town, which the Mayor of Shildon, Cllr Henry Nicholson, was delighted to judge. After much deliberation, Cllr Nicholson named the Whistle Stop Cafe as winners for their fantas-tic summer scene, which consisted of a big sun and clouds, Easter bunnies and chicks.Cllr Nicholson presented cafe owner Paul Harle and

his wife Jasmine with a cheque for £50 on Thursday 30th April when he said, “It gives me great pleasure to present Paul with a cheque for fifty pounds on behalf of myself and Shildon Town Council. “It is important that we recognise local businesses and the role they play in the community.”Paul adds the prize to his recent accolade of being awarded a 5 Star food hygiene rating by Durham County Council.

The Brusselton Incline Group was founded last year to restore one of the first railway bridges in the world, and to remove the overgrown vegetation covering the old stone sleepers on the slope to the Engine Shed at Brus-selton. Much of the work has been completed by the group, and recently stone ballast has been donated by Storey Rail and spread

with the help of volun-teer, Arthur Sowerby. “We are still looking for volunteers to help plant flower seeds and carry out maintenance work to produce a safe walking route for potential users,” said a spokesperson, adding that the group also wish to promote the ancient monument for the forthcoming 2015 centenary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

“We would also like to thank the mayor, Henry Nicholson and Councillor Patricia Pembleton for their continued support, enabling us to place signs and possibly a commemo-rative seat at the top of the incline,” said the spokesperson.Volunteers are welcome and can contact Paul Harle at the Whistle Stop Cafe on 01388 772626 or 07939 127 806.

Fire takes Shildon man’s life

In an article relating to the Annual Parish Meeting in the last edition of the Town Crier (Issue 713), we wrongly stated that Betty Carr is a

Councillor. Mrs Carr is not a Councillor and attended the meeting as a member of the public. We apologise for the mistake.

Shildon AFC secure cup double in season finalé

Latest Athletics Club news

Shildon collected their second trophy of the season on Tuesday night, 5th May, after two Billy Greulich-Smith goals won the Railwaymen the Northern League Cup to add to the Durham Challenge Cup won last month.

The match had been in danger of postponement after poor weather over-night flooded the Heritage Park pitch, but sterling work by the Bishop Auckland ground staff ensured the game got the go ahead. The first half, while com-

petitive, was mainly un-eventful, with the best chance falling to Shildon captain Mark Hudson, but he skewed his shot wide from 12 yards. The Railwaymen dominated possession throughout with Newton Aycliffe playing a

counter attacking game.It was therefore vital for Shildon to score the opening goal and with just six minutes of the second half played, their dominance finally paid off.Shildon worked the ball wide, as they had through-out the game, this time to Chris Emms who twisted his defender inside and out before sending over a cross for Greulich-Smith to power high into the roof of the net.The goal forced Newton Aycliffe to play a more open game, and they almost levelled immediately but for an excellent save from Lewis Graham. However, it also allowed Shildon more space in which to work and just after the hour, they doubled their lead. From a throw-in, the ball broke to Jamie Harwood whose cross was only half cleared. Ben Wood’s pass

found Greulich-Smith and the deadly striker curled an unstoppable shot around a defender for his and Shildon’s second of the game.It was the tall striker’s fifth goal in three cup final ap-pearances over the past two seasons and ensured the Railwaymen would finish their 125th anniversary season on a high after the final day disappointment in the league the previous midweek.Shildon end a hugely suc-cessful season, which included an extended FA Cup run, finishing runners up in the league and of course being crowned double domestic cup winners. The side will now open next season with a Cleator Cup appearance against Marske United and a chance to add further silverware to a cramped trophy cabinet.
